Nearly a week and a half ago, someone had tried to steal Damien's property from him. Oh, slaves went missing all the time, and he accepted that in much the same way as a storekeeper would accept that there would be some loss due to shoplifting. He didn't like it, but it was going to happen, and the best he could do was accept it, and then try to limit it as much as possible. So he was used to slaves being taken in general, though he hated it every time, but this particular slave happened to belong exclusively to him, which just made it completely unacceptable.
He hadn't been able to find out anything, either, except that it had been a lycan, a black melanistic jaguar. Even Lucas didn't know more than that, not even the gender of the animal, which made it very difficult for him to get anything. There were enough black panthers around, too, and the search had ended up being quite fruitless. All of this was annoying, but the fact of the matter was, Lucas was still here. Having had a good opportunity to escape, the boy hadn't, he had chosen to stay with him, and even Damien hadn't known that the boy was that devoted to him.
Surprisingly, perhaps, he hadn't even said anything to his slave about it, other than to question him deeply about it. It wouldn't have been unreasonable for the boy to have expected punishment, but Damien hadn't done anything of the sort. He had, however, been incredibly possessive, and very quick to hurt the boy, which could only be a benefit for the masochist. But there had been no more punishment, not for anything other than the minor infractions that Lucas was always making.
Still, he wanted to talk the situation over with his second-in-command, she was a remarkably insightful woman, and Damien found that she often offered new perspectives. Maybe she would have an idea of how to stop this slave freeing, or at least keep it from happening to powerful vampires. So he was about to send a message via one of his bodyguards, but instead, he hesitated, then grabbed a set of tags from his pocket and fixed them to Lucas' collar so he would be clearly indentified. Once that was done, he sent the boy off to fetch Eva.
It was the first time that Damien had even considered letting Lucas out on his own, but the boy had shown he had some loyalty. So he gave her Eva's room number, figuring she would be in her suite this early in the day, and then he sent him off. Lucas could have left, but he hadn't, so he sent him out on this small errand to test him further - and kept a close mental eye on him the whole time.
