And there they were. There she was. Mitch looked down, adjusting the hat more snugly on his head as he examined her cookies. Sure, the colors were right, but the shapes were wrong. And honestly, he didn't care. As an extremely unreligious person, the holiday was far from sacred. Halloween always got more credit from him anyway. He just hadn't counted on the cookies still being on a plate for whatever reason, though he imagined that was the best way to carry them without them breaking. It might've been a little awkward to take a walk with, but that was a discomfort that he was willing to deal with.
When it came to her, however, there was a larger discomfort that he wasn't ready to face. In fact, he even hesitated to really look at her. Not matter how much he had mentally prepared himself, it was all out the window when she was actually there. It was the same girl he had always known, but this time with all of the feelings he had been covering with dirt just ripped to the surface. Talking about it was the very last thing he wanted to do. He took the plate from her hands, turning his eyes to the path he started walking on rather than looking at her.
"They had better still be good, you said a day or two!" Mitch began, always finding another way to greet her or say that he believed her. He picked up the bitten one on the top, immediately helping himself to what was left of it. He hadn't cared much about her germs in the first place, but it would've been to do so after what had happened the other night. And they were good. It took everything he had not to momentarily forget his worries and smile with the first bite in his mouth. Soft and sweet, not at all like the bland soup he had eaten halfheartedly for lunch. If nothing else, that was a bonus. "The extra butter helped."
