Michel was quick to shake his head and correct her on the matter of concern. "Only concerned about having to clean up an unnecessary mess." It seemed like he could trust her well enough though. She found the knives, but she didn't seem to have cut herself. When he looked over he found an offer of the bread she had brought with her instead. Though hesitant only in his reluctance to accept too much from someone more than an actual concern for her, Michel accepted it. However, he only ripped a large chunk of it off, leaving the rest on the table for her to take if she changed her mind.
With the bread in hand, he went ahead and set the book down on the table as well, that way she could see it easily and he could avoid getting crumbs all over the pages. Not that he wasn't at least somewhat of a careful eater. Just because he was a poorer man didn't mean he needed to always eat like he was starving. That would've hardly been respectable.
"Why? Will you be working that evening?" He wasn't that bothered by the idea of having to reschedule, but he was curious as to why. Her working was his first assumption. He pondered suggesting he just come along for that, too, but that was another wrong impression he didn't want to risk giving her.
