It's a spring festival at its roots, but it was modified to fit into the predominant religion in the western part of the world, Christianity. According to them, Easter Friday or Good Friday was when the holy figure Jesus was unfairly executed, but on Easter Sunday he rose from the dead which proved his divinity. So traditional foods are hot cross buns that represent the cross they used to execute him and eggs on Sunday to represent new life. (That part is more directly carried over from the original beliefs.) It's pretty common to have Easter egg hunts for children where chocolate eggs get hidden around, usually in a garden, and they get to eat the ones they find. Generally children get told that they were brought by the Easter Bunny since rabbits are another symbol of fertility.
