the only way I know it's ever been done before was a killing curse. He was trying to kill Harry, but the spell rebound and hit him. It couldn't actually kill his soul but it killed his body and made him weak. It took 11 years before he figured out how to inhabit someone else and get strong enough to try and make his own body again.
