Rule of Horror #81: Always ask why the house is being sold so cheap.

I'd consider $200 rent falling into that category, which puts us potentially in the supernatural sub-genre, particularly the sub-sub-genre dealing with entities rather than creatures. Among the surprisingly short list of paranormal horror films set in New York City is Rosemary's Baby, Dark Water, and the Devil's Advocate, as well as Dario Argento's 1980 cult classic Inferno which, due to its connections to Suspiria and the not-really-a-twist ending, could also be considered paranormal.

So here are my questions: Has anyone checked the water tank and has anyone found any strange old books written in Italian yet?

My abuela was a santera, so if need to get rid of it, I can take it off your hands and deal with it.

Yeah, I have a ten-inch scar that says exactly why you don't split the party. Stabbing. Stabbing, in my experience, tends to happen.

I'll keep that in mind if one pops up.

Ouch. Who or what did that to you?

Who. I think it was my best friend's now-ex-boyfriend but I can't be absolutely certain. It was his build, but there's also a definite possibility it could have been someone else who just happened to have a similar build. In which case, I have theories.

If you couldn't see his face clearly, it could have been anyone. That sucks that it happened to you, though.

That's the problem and benefit with masks. It couldn't quite be anyone but it could definitely be a hell of a lot of people.

To be fair, I kind of deserved it.

Which still means that it can be anyone.

Nobody deserves to be stabbed.

Fair. I see your point.

Mmm... "deserve" might not be the right word if you're a moralist, I suppose, but I had it coming. Besides breaking three out of four of the core Rules of Horror, I'm also the one who opened Pandora's Box. I might have started an investigation that kicked up some bad shit. So when that bad shit came after me, it felt logical.

Sorry, but I still don't think you deserved it or had it coming just because you started to investigate something. That would be like saying that I had all the bad stuff that happened to me coming just because I decided that dragging my best friend out into the woods one night to see a dead body was something that had to happen. If I hadn't done it, he would have never been bitten and all of us would have never been dragged into a giant supernatural mess.

Wait, bitten?

You sound like a friend of mine. He said... a lot of the same things when it all came out in the open. It's not your fault, you don't deserve it, yadda yadda. It's nice. I'm not sure if I believe it, but it's nice. And y'know who doesn't want to go look at a dead body in the woods? It could have ended up being no worse than Stand By Me. Which, admittedly, wasn't great, but it also didn't end with getting tangled up in supernatural nonsense. How were you supposed to know what would happen then? Anyway, you've got to figure the supernatural mess would have happened with or without you. It's not like you summoned a demon or anything.

Yeah? Your friend sounds like he knows what he's talking about. Not only was it a dead body, but only half of one. I couldn't have. It was Beacon Hills. Nothing crazy happened. Well, until after that night. There definitely was no demon summoning. I did get possessed by a dark kitsune, though. I don't recommend it.

He's alright. Most of the time he's a complete pain in my ass, but occasionally he gets to be the voice of reason. And he knows how I like my coffee. And he leaves the lights on when I crash at his place. So y'know, I keep him around.

Of all the dead bodies I've found, I've never found only half a one before. And I've definitely never been possessed, which seems like a statistical improbability when you consider the sheer number of creepy dolls I own or all of the ill-advised things I've done in cemeteries.

But when things change, they rarely change slowly. It all slams down at once, y'know? One day you're just strolling through life, minding your own business, and the next day everything goes ass-up.

He sounds like a good person to keep around.

It's not pretty.

That sounds about right.

Oh, by the way, I'm Stiles.

I don't imagine so.

I saw a dead pig once and I haven't been able to eat pork since, though. I mean, I've also seen nearly a dozen dead bodies, but that pig is what really sticks with me. I think it was the smell.

Heya, Stiles. I'm Audrey.

I don't think I ever want to see or smell a dead pig.

It's nice to virtually meet you, Audrey.

No, you really don't. It was gross.

You too, Stiles. And maybe we'll see if we can't meet non-virtually too one of these days.
