It's always a thing, but it got a vaccine pretty early and has been understood since the nineteenth century. It's why Mary Mallon was quarantined - they knew how to prevent spreading it, but she wouldn't cooperate. So chances are fairly low, but it's treated well with antibiotics on the off-chance.
