It's summer, it's that weird gross only New York brand of hot, it's after the Fourth...

and here we are with no baseball.

Y'think the Jubilant Entity would let us get as far as Citi Field for the Mets game tomorrow? I could use a lukewarm watery beer and a sub-par hotdog. Honestly, I could use something to make being stuck in this particular city a little more bearable in general.

In lieu of that, I used to coach ball between deployments and if there was a patch of grass somewhere big enough to knock one around, I might not be averse to throwing together a couple of teams for fun.

[EDIT] As it turns out I have ten eight seven tickets to the Mets game tomorrow night so speak up. I'll buy the first round of drinks.

[EDIT2] One ticket left. Barnes? The Parker kid said you might be interested. We're heading out at 4.

Why not? Col. Young Playground?

Might do. Completely forgot about the ball fields in the North Meadow, too, though. Might check into permits for those if enough folks are interested. I get a little skittery about the park

I know there's a guy, Bucky? He likes baseball. I wonder if he'd be interested. I'm sure there's others. Everyone seems to have a lot of pent up aggression energy.

I got tickets to the game tomorrow so if you catch him, ask him if he wants to go along.

What about you? You play? Spectate? You seem to know where all the good fields are.

Yeah, sure. Though maybe he'll see this post!

I played a little when I was a kid. That whole obligatory little league right of passage thing. There was a lot of "Well, at least you tried" and "you've got heart" moments, but I was much better at spectating so I've stuck to that since. It was fun! But it was not something I had any real talent for.

Always a chance of that.

Yeah, I coached a few kids like that. You gotta tread a fine line between being encouraging and supportive and not forcing a kid to do something they really don't want to do. Both my kids loved to play, fortunately, so I could sometimes get them to help out a bit with the timider ones.

You wanna come along to the game, though? You've been a big help. I'm not gonna buy you a beer, but I'll buy you a soda.

I've never really taught anyone anything, so I'll take your word on that! But I definitely appreciated teachers and other adults who weren't trying to force me (or others) into things they weren't comfortable with.

Yeah, sure! And I'm fine with the soda!

It's no good for kids. You can nudge them a little outside their comfort zone and that's alright, but you don't ever wanna push. That's how you get resentment and being afraid to try new things and the neighborhood kid who's scared to ice skate because he fell once and his dad yelled at him.

Good. Cause I already saved you a ticket.

I'll have to take your word on that since I don't have kids.

Awesome!

No, but you are one, and you're smart. Which means you pick things up. You remind me of a considerably better-adjusted someone I knew once, actually.

I don't mention it, but, yeah, I am smart and do pick things up. Really quickly usual Sounds like bragging, you know? People get mad when you're smart and know it, and then they And is that a good thing or a bad thing or just a thing?

Maybe to some people it might seem like bragging, but if you're good at something you should be proud of it. And yeah, it's a good thing.
