When people say to judge him by the standards of the time I like to point out that he was thrown in jail when he returned to Spain for tyranny, incompetence and brutality. Isabella and Ferdinand specifically sent someone to not only replace him as governor, but write a 50 page report on his crimes that even some of his supporters testified for.
