Fred was missing something, and he hated it. He wanted to be in on the joke, he wanted to laugh with everyone else, and when no one else was laughing--not at or with him--it made him feel lost. Being out of the loop made him grumpy, which didn't help his hangover, and he slumped back on the bench and glared at the traffic and people around him. It was supposed to be his birthday. Yeah, there was a war on, and people were dying and disappearing. The magical world was shite, but his and George's birthday was supposed to be a bright spot in that dreariness. They were supposed to be laughing and lightening moods and making people feel good.
He wasn't supposed to be sat on a bench in the middle of New York City, with people going about their Christmas shopping. For one thing, the holidays were months off. For another thing, they were happy, and he was not, and that was just wrong. Closing his eyes, Fred took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He was hungry and hungover, and his foul mood was his choice. He chose to let it go. It didn't stop his head from hurting, but it relaxed his brow and had him looking around with different eyes. The Muggle device was more advanced than the last one he'd seen. The kid, Freddy, asked if he was new, and Bill and George had said this wasn't a joke.
Fred fished the note out of his pocket and reread it. The best pranks had simple details. Each player was known, and no one who was a bad liar was trusted with any of the details. Going back over the conversations, he didn't get a hint of too much protesting from anyone, and the Jubilant Entity thing was too detailed. Whoever did this didn't keep it simple so it wouldn't fall apart, and Georgie was better than that. "Shite."
