WHO: Fred, George, & Bill Weasley
WHERE: Times Square
WHEN: Sunday, 1 December, after this
WARNINGS: Potential talks of death; definite feels
SPOILERS? TBD

Fred was missing something, and he hated it. He wanted to be in on the joke, he wanted to laugh with everyone else, and when no one else was laughing--not at or with him--it made him feel lost. Being out of the loop made him grumpy, which didn't help his hangover, and he slumped back on the bench and glared at the traffic and people around him. It was supposed to be his birthday. Yeah, there was a war on, and people were dying and disappearing. The magical world was shite, but his and George's birthday was supposed to be a bright spot in that dreariness. They were supposed to be laughing and lightening moods and making people feel good.

He wasn't supposed to be sat on a bench in the middle of New York City, with people going about their Christmas shopping. For one thing, the holidays were months off. For another thing, they were happy, and he was not, and that was just wrong. Closing his eyes, Fred took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He was hungry and hungover, and his foul mood was his choice. He chose to let it go. It didn't stop his head from hurting, but it relaxed his brow and had him looking around with different eyes. The Muggle device was more advanced than the last one he'd seen. The kid, Freddy, asked if he was new, and Bill and George had said this wasn't a joke.

Fred fished the note out of his pocket and reread it. The best pranks had simple details. Each player was known, and no one who was a bad liar was trusted with any of the details. Going back over the conversations, he didn't get a hint of too much protesting from anyone, and the Jubilant Entity thing was too detailed. Whoever did this didn't keep it simple so it wouldn't fall apart, and Georgie was better than that. "Shite."

Hugo had said a simple wish and somehow that had spawned into an actual person showing up. The future nephews and nieces was one thing, but Percy showing up had been painful enough. This place had to be playing havoc on his brother's mind, but probably not as much as a single wish being answered.

I hope Uncle Fred comes.

I do too.

Now he found himself practically running down the sidewalk, his beat-up Chuck Taylor's hitting pavement, as he rushed towards the source of his broken heart. That battle had changed a lot of lives, freed people from the terror of Voldy Moldy, and devastated his family. George saw the way his family looked at him with pain in their eyes. They had all lost Fred. He understood that, honest, but he had lost his twin. George had lost Fred. The other half of his soul. Suddenly Fred was here and talking about their birthday and he felt like his heart was going to leap straight out of his mouth.

He managed to skid to a stop when he spotted his twin. He glanced wildly at Bill before trying to step towards Fred. His feets seemed rooted to the ground and he had this annoying burning sensation in his eyes.

Fred was here.

George opened his mouth to call out to Fred and a simple strangled sound came out. He reached out and grabbed Bill's hand hard as he tried to get the roaring his head to stop. His brother was right there, so close, and he was starting to feel like he had stopped knowing how to breathe. "Bill," he whispered painfully. "Help me."

Two years. It had been two years since Bill last saw Fred. As soon as he'd seen the post on the network, his mind had been racing. The main thing he wanted to do here and at home was to help and protect his family, and all of his brothers were going to need that. Percy and Fred to get used to this place, and George to handle this new influx. Yes, he wanted to see Fred again for himself, but he also wanted to assist the twins. He didn't know how much he'd be needed, but being there was important to him. And focusing on them meant he wasn't going to have a breakdown.

It turned out he was needed a bit more than he'd thought at the start, and he held tightly to George's hand with both of his own in turn, ready to keep him upright if need be. He didn't look well at all. There were a few ways to diffuse this tension, but he went with his favorite. "Oi! Fred! Stop lollygagging and come say hi to your brothers."

Fred's head, and a rude gesture, snapped up at his name, but all retorts and thoughts of confusion and his aching head vanished when he saw his brothers. Something was wrong with George. The only thing that mattered then was him fixing that. His twin was his better half, and this wasn't a joke. If his conversations with the others while he'd waited hadn't told him that, the look on George's face, and the way Billy held him up, would've.

Between one thought and the next, he was by his brothers--apparation was like breathing for him at this point--and he gripped their shoulders. "You look like you've been punched in the gut, Georgie. Did Perce apologise to you, too? The loop that threw me through." His tone was light, but there was a forced feeling to it. His brother had him worried, and he looked at Bill for answers.

George flinched slightly at Bill's yell and almost wanted to reach out to grab the sound back. He knew he couldn't, there was no taking any of this back. His twin, his brother, the other half of his soul was moving towards them. His heart started to beat rapidly and he managed to resist the urge to grab his necklace. Somehow he managed a tight smile as he increased his grip on Bill's hands.

"Perce did apologise," he found himself saying. "He isn't so bad." There was a slight wince as he defended their older brother. Fred was from a time where they were still at odds with the former Prefect, but the words tumbled out of his mouth anyway. "I mean besides this place is messing with him enough right now." Merlin, he wanted to hug Fred. He wanted to hug him and never let go, but he knew if he so much as embraced his twin then he'd burst out into ugly sobs in the middle of Time Square, which would only freak Fred out.

"I'm glad you finally arrived."

Bloody Hell, he was going to throw up. Well, that or pass out.

Fred was here and in front of him. George didn't know what possessed him, but he let go of Bill and threw his arms all the way around his twin. He buried his face against Fred's shoulder and squeezed his eyes shut in an attempt to stop the tears. His shoulders shook slightly as he fought the wave of emotions attacking him.

When Fred looked to him, Bill only smiled reassuringly, letting George take the lead. And lead on he did, a fact that made Bill's chest swell with pride. They hadn't been sorted Gryffindor for nothing, but this might have been the bravest thing he'd seen in a while. Well, discounting Fleur delivering their daughter. Still! Top three moment.

He let the twins have a moment to themselves after George let go, shoving his hands in his pockets and looking around Times Square. He hadn't been to the place yet since arriving, and it really was quite something. When he figured it had been long enough (but hadn't been much time at all, he was impatient), he stepped forward to embrace them both at the same time, squeezing tight. "We're all glad you showed. Even Percy."

Fred had never seen George like this, and it scared him. His natural reaction to make a joke to lighten the mood didn't feel right. This was real, but he didn't know what this was. He thought he didn't want to know, because it couldn't be anything good, especially when paired with Percy not being a prat, and with Bill looking like dad when faced with a plug.

He clung to George, wanting desperately to make his brother be okay, and let Bill hug them both for several long moments. "Lads, this is very not British," he joked. He couldn't help it. Jokes were his default when he was uncomfortable. "And it's scaring me." Fred gripped George's shoulders and pushed him back enough to see his face. "What happened here? Do we need to get revenge on someone? I have a few offensive ideas in my book."

Revenge? How could Fred get revenge on something he couldn't even stop? George stared at his brother, his twin, the other half of his soul, and he found himself not knowing what to say. He glanced at Bill with wide eyes that were glassy with unshed tears. There was a part of him that wanted to have Bill explain all the horrible things that had happened. That wasn't fair and he couldn't do that to his brother. No, he would have to break the news to his twin himself.

"Maybe we should not do this in Times Square?" He pulled Fred back in for another hug before he began to pull himself free of both of his brothers. He found he couldn't fully separate himself from Fred as he grabbed his brother's hand. He needed the contact, the anchor to the moment. His teeth dug into the corner of his lower lip as he actually started to leaking. Tears coursed down his cheeks as he sniffed hard.

Shite, he was crying in front of Fred and it was totally going to set him more on edge.

"I have something in my eyes."
