Who: Pepper and Morgan
What: Pancakes, Coffee, and Secrets
Where: Their apartment
When: Backdated to November 4th
Warning: Other than language? Nah.

Morgan had woken up that afternoon back to her normal self. It took a while for her to emerge from her room, because of the fact that she could remember every single thing she had done during her stint as a 6-year-old- including reading her journal and divulging some of its contents to her father.

Although she felt a little awkward from the whole ordeal, a part of her wanted to thank the Entity for the gift it had given her parents. Neither of them had memories of their own of her as a child. All they possessed were the stories she and others could give them, at least now they had something. It was quite honestly the best early birthday present she could have thought of.

After making sure the little snoop had put everything back in its proper place, she opened her bedroom door and peered into the kitchen. “Mom?”

Pepper, when she had first arrived in Goodland, had been very worried about how the children that Tony had collected would react to her. In her time, she had no real experience with caring for children, especially not teenagers, and she wanted to be the best … whatever figure she was in their lives. When Morgan popped up her little self, that fear had reawoken in her slightly. She wanted the little girl to love her, but having very little experience with children that age made her nervous once again. It was a relief that the little girl instantly seemed to adore her, and didn’t seem to notice when she made little missteps that she cursed herself over.

Pepper was in the kitchen, a pot of coffee on, and pancake batter stirred up in a little bowl. Pepper was not one who considered herself particularly domestic, though she had been told that this would change in the next couple of years of her life— when her and Tony give up the company in a way, and move into a more rural setting. She was actually rather pleased with her budding cooking skills.

“Hey darling,” She greeted cheerfully before it even hit her that she was hearing Morgan’s teenage voice again. Pepper laughed to herself at the realization, and turned to her, “I suppose you’ll have Coffee instead of Chocolate Milk with your pancakes?” She winked at the teenager.

Morgan smiled brightly and rushed over to hug Pepper. She was so glad to be back to her proper age. Despite Goodland’s mishaps, this place was kind of magical. Which would have been an absurd thought to her a year ago. Her brain was wired to think logically. Everything was supposed to be able to be explained by science, but the Entity had made a believer out of her. The fact that she was able to get to know her mother years before Morgan had even been a thought in parents’ minds alone was all the proof she needed. It was unexplainable and incredibly magical.

“God, yes. Coffee, please,” she said as she finally pulled away from the hug and moved to grab her mug. “I still want the whipped cream on the pancakes though.”

“So,” Morgan began- pouring the coffee into her mug and giving her mom a playful smirk. “Did you miss me?”

Pepper wrapped her arms warmly, and tightly, around her daughter when she moved in for a hug. The woman in front of her never ceased to amaze her, not even when she had been a little one. She couldn’t help but laugh at Morgan’s plea for coffee.

“Good thing I made a whole pot,” Pepper grinned as she began to pour the batter into the hot pan to begin making the breakfast. “Go ahead and pour me a mug too please?”

Pepper hummed as she thought about the question that her daughter asked, and shook her head slowly. “You were there, in the way she spoke, and in the glimpses of attitude she had.” She teased her slightly, “I am a big fan of you being self-sufficient though, even if you were a particularly smart and helpful little one.”

Morgan smiled and peered over Pepper’s shoulder to look at the batter in the pan, before moving to pour her mom a cup of coffee too. “I guess some things never change, huh?” She mused, placing her mom’s mug down and hopping up on the counter so she could watch her make the pancakes. “I’m glad you got to make some memories with tiny me.” She didn’t want either of her parents to feel like they had been cheated out of her childhood.

“Even if tiny me was a pain in my ass. Did you know that she is the biggest snoop? She went through my entire room,” her eyes rolled then. She probably shouldn’t have been surprised, Morgan had always been dangerously curious. “She even read my journal.”

She was attempting to ease her way into a conversation that involved some of the contents of that journal.

“Plenty things change,” Pepper said with a shrug, this place had been full of strange and unexpected changes that they all just sort of had to roll with, “Luckily, you are a pretty perfect kid at any age.” She playfully nudged her daughter. Oh, she was sure that there had been more than a few hard times and tantrum between the two of them growing up, but at the end of the day, she was more than proud of the woman that Morgan had become.

“I can see that,” Pepper added when Morgan said that she had been a snoop. “Your father is the same way, though I’m sure he would tell that he is just …. Inclined towards curiosity.” She smiled fondly, as she attempted to flip the pancakes clumsily.

“I should have paid her off with cookies to tell me all your darkest secrets.”

“Now, see? That’s a dangerous road you’re going down. You’re going to inflate my ego horribly.” It was a teasing sarcastic tone coming out of her, but her face was lit up with pride. One of the main things Morgan had wanted to do growing up, was to make her mom proud. Hearing Pepper say she was perfect wouldn’t ever get old, despite the idea that Morgan had in her own head that she wasn’t. Smiling, she returned the nudge. “Thank you, Mom.”

Her smile widened when Pepper said that Tony was the same way. One of Morgan’s favorite things was finding similarities between herself and her parents. “Proper age me is just inclined to curiosity. Tiny me? Is just a snoop.”

She fondly watched her Mom fussing with the pancakes for a few silent minutes, before continuing. “Funny you should mention that because she may or may not have vaguely hinted to Dad about something that I kind of wanted to talk to you about first.”

Pepper couldn’t help but catch the proud expression on Morgan’s face, and there was a bit of a relief. It was little moments like this that made Pepper feel like she was honestly nailing this parenting thing. “If I can reign in your fathers ego, I’m sure I can manage yours.” She teased back.

Pepper nodded as Morgan noted the difference between curiosity and snooping as she managed a handful of small pancakes onto a plate. “Obviously, curiosity without purpose is snooping, right?”

She straightened up a little bit when Morgan said that she had something she wanted to talk about. She bit her lip, softly, “You know you can talk to me about anything,” She said softly, “is everything okay?”

Morgan tossed her head back and laughed. “You’re a saint...the best of all of us.” The teasing was still there, but she was also completely serious. Her mom deserved an award; maybe she would get her one of those customizable trophies- or build her one herself.

She caught the bite to Pepper’s lip, and the change of her tone and immediately switched to reassurance mode. “Everything is perfect. It’s not a bad thing, I promise.” She fidgeted on the counter a bit, placing her mug down on the surface and running her hand through her hair. While it wasn’t bad news she wanted to share with her mom, it was still new territory for Morgan. “I um...I kind of met someone? Like um…met someone?”

"I definitely wouldnt go that far!" Pepper grinned. "I definitely do alright, but sainthood might be a little extreme… though Saint Pepper's day could be fun."

Pepper turned off the stove and moved closer to her daughter, putting a gentle hand on her back as she fidgeted on the counter, their breakfast and coffee temporarily forgotten.

He face lit lightly when she'd mentioned meeting someone though. "Oh! That's great. We'll get to meet this person soon, I hope?" Pepper had a million questions, but she didnt want Morgan to feel like she was prying. "Who is it?"

“It’s official. I’m going to make Saint Pepper’s day a thing,” she said with another laugh. Maybe she could convince her dad and Peter to include it on their holidays’ list.

Morgan’s nerves were somewhat calm when her mom put her hand on her back. She managed to smile a little, and rest her head on Pepper’s shoulder for a moment. She didn’t know why she was so nervous, it wasn’t like she felt that she couldn’t be open with her parents.

Pepper’s reaction caused her smile to widen, however, and she lifted her head to look at her mom. “I hope so too. He was at my graduation party, but he’s easily overwhelmed by big crowds. This world is still new to him, he’s learning how to live in it without the hardships of the world he’s from.” Morgan paused for a minute, her expression soft and perhaps a little giddy? “His name is Markus...and um...he’s not exactly a person. He’s an Android, and I know that isn’t conventional, but, he makes me so happy. He’s compassionate and genuine and he accepts my flaws and I think...no...I know he cares about me as much as I care for him,” she bit her bottom lip and shook her head. “And I’m terrified I might do something to fuck this up.”

"Good luck with that," Pepper shot back playfully. "I've got my fair share of haters." She was used to a lot of people not noticing her until she did something they didn't like. It had happened to her most of her professional life, especially when she had been promoted from Personal Assistant to CEO.

Pepper's face lit up as she saw the way that Morgan lit up. "Oh honey," she said softly. Maybe it was lucky that Pepper had undergone a fair amount of press training with Stark Industries, because the shock that Markus was an Android and not a real person only barely registered on her face. She tried to search for the words to say.

It was sort of like Vision wasn't it? And his relationship with Wanda. She couldn't begrudge it, even though it still seemed a little odd to her…. Visions circumstances were particularly unique and she didn't want her daughters heartbroken by something she wasn't entirely sure could feel. Pepper just pulled her daughter into a tight hug.

"Morgan, if he makes you happy, then that's all that I can ask for." She told her gently. And that was true, she wanted Morgan to be happy, and if this made her happy, Pepper would hold in her hesitations until she met him for herself.

“The haters aren’t invited.” It was hard for Morgan to imagine anyone disliking her Mom, but she assumed that it probably came with the territory of being a CEO.

“He really does make me happy.” Morgan wrapped her arms around Pepper, returning her hug just as tightly. She knew her new found relationship wasn’t one that everyone would understand, but that was okay- not everyone had to understand. The important thing was having support from those closest to her. “Thank you, Mom. I love you.”
