Tony & Steve
WHO: Steve Rogers & Tony Stark
WHAT: Reunion
WHERE: A local coffee shop.
WHEN: Backdated to Steve's arrival
WARNINGS: NA
SPOILERS: Through Endgame

Tony hated admitting it, but he was nervous about meeting Steve. The captain was further along in their reality than Tony was, which made Tony uneasy even though he knew about future events. He had been moments away from calling Steve for help in New York prior to the alien invasion, but the task ultimately fell to Bruce once Tony climbed on the spacecraft. Sure, a previous Steve arrived in Goodland with news of time travel and renewed bonds between them, but Tony hadn’t lived that. He wasn’t sure what this version of Steve would say or feel about things between them. Still, Tony meant what he said about moving on and creating a "normal” life in Goodland with his family. Steve meant something to him, which was why the Siberian events hurt, but time passed and they were in a new reality --- a reality where James Rogers existed, who also meant something to Tony. All in all? There were plenty of reasons to reconnect with Steve. Plus, frankly, he grew used to having Steve again so his disappearance from Goodland hurt.

He arrived at the coffee shop early and bought a pot of coffee, a jug of juice, and a tray of assorted pastries to share with Steve. He poured himself a cup of coffee and checked his watch. Way too early.

“Hey,” Steve greeted Tony as he slid into the booth across from him. He was a little anxious about this meeting, himself, even though he was trying not to show it. He thought he and Tony had made their peace in his time, but he knew Tony was from before then and even if their conversation on the network had been friendly, he wasn’t sure where they stood. He knew Tony had been hurt - rightfully so - by what had happened in Siberia. Steve didn’t exactly regret standing up for Bucky, but he was sorry to have hurt Tony in the process. The two men didn’t always see eye to eye, but Tony’s friendship was still something he valued.

“Pepper settling in okay?” he asked, maybe kind of obviously trying to avoid what they really needed to talk about.

Tony nodded in greeting. His expression was neutral, but not unkind. “Actually, yeah,” he said, chuckling. Steve asking about Tony’s fiancée definitely helped ease tension. “She is handling it remarkably well for coming from the same time as me and not only finding an alternate reality, but a few kids and animals she wasn’t expecting.” He shook his head, obviously amused, at the memory of Pepper’s eagerness to jump into a life in Goodland.

He waved a hand over the goodies and beverages. “Dig in,” he added as he pushed an empty dish and cup toward Steve. “You doing alright here on Planet Bob?”

Steve was glad to hear that things seemed to be going well for Pepper and Tony. It was plain to see life in Goodland was agreeing with the man and he deserved that. He deserved a chance to live. However Steve might feel about being brought here against his will in general, it was hard to truly be mad about it when it meant getting back people he’d lost.

He nodded as he helped himself to a share of the food and took a sip of some coffee. “I’m not sure I’m a fan of anything that can just rip people from their lives like this, but I can see the place has it’s upsides, too,” he said. He was still getting used to the situation, but he was trying to keep an open mind.

“Yeah, I get that,” Tony replied. “Some of us are trying to figure out the intent here, but it looks less sinister than I initially expected.” He shrugged. “Seems more like someone messing with things they don’t understand.” He rolled his eyes. “Which, of course, brings a whole new set of issues to worry about, but we hope to figure out enough that we can stabilize the...science, magic, whatever this place runs on...we’d ultimately like to give people a choice about being here.” He let out a short laugh. “I guess you know what I’d choose.” He just hoped some of the ones he loved would make the same decision.

Steve nodded. He was new enough to not have his own take on things, yet, but he trusted Tony. They might not always end up on the same side of every issue, but if there was something sinister at play here, he trusted Tony to say so.

“I’ve got my own reasons to stick around,” he said, “but people should have some agency in this. It’s not really my area of expertise, but if there’s anything I can do to help...”

Tony cocked his head while debating if he should ask about Steve’s reasons for sticking around. It wasn’t the first time Tony worried about whether Steve made it at home. Sure, others told him the captain survived, but what if they were trying to spare Tony’s feelings? “Yeah, I’ll let you know,” Tony promised. “I mean, we can make a good team when we need to.” His smile was playful, but his eyes briefly dropped down as he spoke. “Anyway,” he cleared his throat. “You can say no if you like, but before...we had…well…” He dug out the small box that held the engraved cufflinks Tony used to ask his friends to be groomsmen. He pushed it toward the other man. “I’d like you to be a groomsman in my wedding if you are up for it.”

Whatever had transpired between them before, Steve had still considered Tony a friend. He still did, even if he hadn't been sure exactly where they stood now, here, until the moment Tony pulled out that box and made his offer. He was a little surprised, given the time he knew Tony was from, but it was a good surprise. It was a gesture that spoke volumes about what progress that other version must have made with him. Steve couldn't help feeling grateful for that. “I’d be honored, Tony,” he said without hesitation as he took the box. “Have you set a date yet?” Whenever it was, he'd been there. For him, Tony and Pepper were already married, but that wasn't going to stop him from standing up there for them both on the big day here.
