Hope grinned at the awkward shake, reaching out with her other hand to gently take hold of his pinky and put it in the right pose. "Here. This is called a pinky promise. It's another way to seal your oath."
Eating just chips all day wouldn't be good anyway, but she really wanted to tell him she could buy more bags later, if only so he might not feel so territorial about them. He needed real food, too, so he could treat them like precious treats, she supposed. "I hope he does. But I have other friends so that I don't miss him too much, and maybe I'm becoming your friend, too?"
She sat up a bit straighter at the serious look on his face. Even though his question shattered her heart, she wanted to take it as seriously as he did in the asking of it, so she took some time to think before she answered. "Well, this place is kind of confusing no matter what age you are, but maybe more confusing the younger you are. So if you can be nice to people when things are confusing, that seems like the right thing to do because at the end of the day we're all trying to figure this thing out. Also, you're alone, and I've been alone enough in my life to know how that feels. Sometimes, even though I put up a front, I wished I had someone who would be kind to me, so I want to be that for someone else who needs it."
