The fact he had a daughter didn't phase her. She didn't really have any experience to make that meaningful to her. She hadn't had any experience with the concept of family. She understood it in a vague, detached sense, but the reality of parents and children living in a house, getting ready for the day over breakfast and discussing the events of the day over dinner was completely foreign to her.
She tilted her head at his question. What did she liked to eat? No one had ever asked her that. Benny had given her ice cream and a burger after he caught her stealing fries. That was what he had. She hadn't been offered a choice, really. He'd just given her what he had. And he'd paid for his kindness with a bullet because Papa came for her.

She had a brief stab of fear that this man might be from the lab, but then dismissed it. He wasn't dressed like all the others she had seen, and he was far too kind. his eyes were soft, the lines in his face were furrowed with concern, not anger or frustration.
"Eggos," she finally said, her voice soft and barely more than a whisper. Eggos were the one treat Papa allowed her, when she did something he considered extraordinary.
