Freddy & Nico
WHO: Freddy Freeman & Nico di Angelo
WHERE: Nico's bedroom
WHEN: Backdated to the banishing of the maze.
WHAT: Comfort? Assurance? Something like that. :)
STATUS: Threading
SPOILERS: Maybe for Percy Jackson's various incarnations
WARNINGS: Maybe some dark themes, such as death

Freddy felt fairly useless when it came to helping anyone in the maze. He didn't have his powers in Goodland and his cane slowed him down so it wasn't like he could go fight whatever monsters were in the maze. He still remembered facing that dementor-looking creature a few months ago; the creature not only bested him, but left Freddy with a broken cane and bloody face. Yep, he was useless alright. Still, Freddy agreed to help with "behind the scenes" stuff when several residents, including Nico, hatched a plan to banish the maze. He made sure to stay out of the way, but also ascertained who was where and was ready to alert nearby medical staff if anyone needed help. The plan, amazingly, worked, but left everyone, including Freddy, exhausted. However, Freddy was most worried about Nico, which was how he ended up napping on his friend's floor while Nico rested in his bed.

Bringing down a large, nefarious structure wasn't easy, even with combined abilities. To say Nico had been tired afterward would have been an understatement. Still, having other people there, using their own powers... He'd been fully prepared to do it alone, or with Hazel's help. But he hadn't had to. It left a lot to think about, but he'd been too exhausted to do much more than make it to his bed before passing out. That alone had him rousing from sleep earlier than he might have otherwise if he'd been the only one to try to take the maze apart.

He was still groggy as he opened his eyes, and he briefly thought about closing them again. Sleep sounded nice, and he hadn't had any dreams, which he supposed was a perk to exerting himself so thoroughly. Still, something had woken him, and, looking around slowly as he pushed himself into a seated position, he suspected it might have been the napping figure on his floor. Or maybe it was the ghost alerting him to the napping figure on the floor. Go away, he told the ghost, glad to see he hadn't spent all of his energy as the ghost huffed out of the room, a string of Spanish in her wake that Nico could only sort of understand. With her gone, he turned his attention back to the figure on the floor.

"Freddy?" he said, rubbing at his eyes. Had something happened? Had the maze come back? No, he told himself. Freddy wouldn't be sleeping if it had. Well, he didn't think his friend would be. He yawned, trying to figure out why Freddy was on his floor and also what day it was, the latter of which wasn't entirely important in the moment.

Freddy, nestled into the bed he created with borrowed couch cushions and extra pillows, thought he heard his name. He tugged the blanket he took from the linen closet toward his neck and carefully rolled onto his side. He was careful to support his spine when he created the makeshift bed; he knew from past experience how stiff he'd get if he fell asleep in an odd position. "Hi," he said in a sleepy voice.

"Hi," Nico said, sleepy and a little confused. "What--Did something happen? Why are you," he yawned, "on the floor?" His eyes got wide, and he straightened at a thought.

"Did something happen to your sister?" he asked, suddenly feeling wide awake. Mary seemed nice, and he knew how much family meant to Freddy. And he knew what it was like to lose a sister. Had the maze come back and claimed her? Had something else come up? He glanced around for his sword, his instincts already kicking in, his brain trying to formulate a plan. If it would just wake up a little bit more... Well, if it had, he might have noticed the cushions and pillows. Instead, he couldn't help but think maybe something had happened, because something always seemed to happen, both in his world and here.

Freddy, confused by the questions, squinted up at Nico. However, once Freddy realized Nico was apparently ready to go do something, he held a hand up. "No, no, everything is fine!" Freddy couldn't blame Nico for worrying considering everything that happened. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay." He sat up then, suddenly feeling self-conscious. "Sorry if er..." He shrugged.

Nico relaxed a little upon hearing everything was fine. That was a lot better than where his thoughts were heading. The maze hadn't come back. No one was in trouble. Nothing had happened to Freddy's sister, his own sister was fine, and Freddy seemed fine. And he'd come to make sure he was okay. That didn't explain to him why Freddy had fallen asleep on his floor with, were those cushions from the couch? And pillows? Why had he done that...

Shaking his head, Nico said, "No, it's okay. You don't have to apologize. I'm just still half asleep. I thought... I don't know." He shook his head again then yawned. "What time is," he asked, more to himself than from expecting an answer.

Now that he was fully awake, Freddy felt even more embarrassed about curling up on Nico's floor like some sort of pet. He grabbed his cane and hoisted himself off the cushions. "Not sure," he told Nico, glancing around for a clock. He wasn't sure where he left his phone. "I'll just put these back," he added as he grabbed a pillow from the floor. "You alright? Need, um, a drink or food or something?"

"I'm alright," Nico replied, slightly confused for a moment. Had he said something? Done something? Maybe he'd been talking in his sleep? Was that why Freddy seemed ready to leave? Or was he misunderstanding something? "You don't have to put them back right now if you don't want to," he added. "Unless you want to." A part of him supposed, if the pillows were from the couch in the living room, his roommates might wonder about them, especially if they wanted to use the couch. It wasn't a big part of him that thought about it, but it did cross his mind.

"Or you have to go? If you have to go, I understand." Especially if the other boy had been there awhile. "But if you don't, you can stay. If you want."

Did that mean Nico wanted him to stay? Or was he just being polite? Freddy thought it was the former. Or maybe he just wanted it to be the former. Either way, he shook his head. "Nah, I have nothing to do," he replied. "I mean I want to stay. Not just because I have nothing to do. I mean, this is doing something. I like doing this. Hanging out, I mean. But if you want to be alone, you can. I mean, I know that took a lot out of you. You are sure you are okay?" He dropped the cushion he was holding and crossed to Nico's bed. He plopped without asking.

Nico scooted over a little bit to give Freddy room to sit down. "I'd like it if you stayed for a little bit," he said. "And I'm okay. Just tired." How long he'd stay awake, he didn't know, but he was fine for now. Awake enough at least to hold a conversation. Or attempt to hold one. He shifted to a more comfortable sitting position, pulling his legs up and crossing them. "How are you," he asked, quickly looking Freddy over as if to make sure he wasn't hurt or anything.

Freddy smiled when Nico assured him he wanted company. However, his face flushed when Nico glanced over him. "I'm fine, I swear," he said quickly. "You know me, I have my trusty friend here to fend off the bad dudes." He jiggled his cane before resting it between his knees again. "Really, though, I wanted to make sure you didn't, like, have nightmares or something. You know, after...everything was so intense. I don't know how anyone is still standing with all those powers flying around! It was totally cool."

Nico looked down at his lap, idly picking at invisible lint on his jeans (had he really been so tired he hadn't changed, hadn't even gotten under the blankets? It looked that way to him. He supposed, given Freddy's presence in his room, it was a good thing not to be caught in his pajamas. That would just be--well, he didn't want to think about that), not sure how to take Freddy's words. He couldn't recall anyone associating his powers with the world cool before. Maybe Freddy meant the others? That made more sense to him, he decided, as he shrugged a little.

"Maybe their powers affect them differently? Or take something else from them? I'm not sure," he said. He hadn't really ever met people like those who'd helped with the maze. He didn't know how their powers worked. He wasn't even a hundred percent sure how the powers of other demigods worked. Somehow he doubted half-bloods like Percy and Jason ever got tired like he did.

"But no nightmares, no," he said with a shake of his head.

"Good, you don't deserve that." Freddy's tone was surprisingly forceful, like he was mad at the idea of nightmares bothering Nico. He hesitated a second, but then placed a hand on Nico's back, hoping the boy didn't pull away. "I'm glad you are okay. I was worried. You were really brave."

While his initial instincts were to pull away from the touch, part of Nico was too tired to do so. Plus, where would he go? Off his bed? Rolling off his bed didn't seem very appealing. It seemed a little painful, really. And he didn't exactly mind Freddy's hand on his back just then. Maybe he was just surprised by the forceful tone the other boy had used. Or the part about him being really worried. Or Freddy calling him brave.

"I'm not brave," he said after a few seconds, shrugging a little. "I just did what I thought we should do. It's stupid that things like that maze keep happening, and I guess I got tired of it." Not to mention, from outside of it, it reminded him too much of Deadlus's Labyrinth, though he didn't mention that.

"Not everyone would do that," Freddy insisted. He patted Nico's back quickly before withdrawing his hand. His heart pounded. Why had he done that? "But you did. I think you are majorly brave so deal with it." He grinned. "Okay?"

"Okay," Nico said, not really sure what else to say. Compliments were... weird, and he wasn't sure how to take them. Part of him wanted to argue against Freddy's words, but part of him didn't. Was it because he was tired? Yawning, he thought it might be. Because the alternative... No. He refused to think of the alternative.

"Thanks. For being there. And here," he said with another yawn, covering his mouth with his hand.

Freddy noticed Nico was exhausted. "You should sleep more," he said. Then, impulsively, he wrapped one arm around Nico's shoulders and quickly squeezed. "Uh, if you need anything, let me know? I'll...I'll see you later." He pulled himself up with his cane. His heart was pounding. What had he just done?

Nico wanted to object, to say he wasn't exhausted, just kind of really tired. However, his body was already objecting to that thought. He was exhausted. So much so that he might have hallucinated Freddy giving his shoulder a squeeze, a sort of half side hug thing. Why would he do that? He wasn't entirely sure he had because it hadn't felt as uncomfortable as when other people touched him. He decided, at least for the moment, maybe it didn't happen, and he nodded a little.

"I'll let you know," he said, taking a second to watch Freddy stand before settling back down in bed with another yawn, eyes sliding shut. "See you later, Freddy."
