Who: Ben Hargreeves and Tony Stark
What: Meeting
Where: Tony’s Lab; Stark Industries
When: Wednesday Afternoon

Ben hadn’t been lying when he’d told Tony that he was willing to do anything to protect the people he loved from himself. He’d taken matters into his own hands once, and though it wasn’t the ideal way to go about it, he had done what he felt was necessary. Here, luckily, he had more tools at his disposal. His siblings were supportive in a way they hadn’t been at home (not that he could blame them, they were all teenagers when he’d died).

Even now, a week removed, he was still struggling with the Maze. That was his problem-- the reason why he didn’t respond to the Hero ideals as well as his siblings had-- his dad had told him that forever ago, he was too sensitive. Ben wanted to help people, but he seldom wanted to fight. He didn’t want to train, or release the Horror, or watch his brothers and sisters get injured in combat. His father had always been more concerned about the reputation of his “Academy” than the children actually in it.

Out of reflex, Ben’s eyes darted to the brand they all wore: the black inked tattoo they’d been forced to get before the age of 12. It was covered by a cast, that he’d had his siblings sign, and Klaus doodle on. It was almost a relief not to see it, as if it was the first time that Reginald couldn’t control him.

Ben had entered Stark Industries and was being guided up to one of Tony Stark’s personal labs. Stark Industries was an impressive building, more so even than the Manor, not that he would admit that outloud. He allowed himself to get lost in the things they passed, as to not get bogged down with the sudden nervousness of meeting the man. Both his brother, Five and Klaus, had talked highly of Mr. Stark. He’d helped Vanya, though the extent of Vanya’s power’s alluded Ben as he didn’t know she’d even had any until recently. Maybe the older man could help him too.

“Hi.” Ben greeted the man, as the doors swished open and he walked through. He didn’t know what else to say, and he stayed close to the doors, in case he was intruding. There was a slight flash back to the time that Ben had dared enter his father’s lab (though that had been mostly for medical purposes, and the mechanical maintenance on their mother), and how angry Reginald had been for the intrusion. Instinctively, Ben straightened his stance, but was ready to leave in a moment’s notice. “I’m Ben. It’s… nice to meet you.” He offered, with a tiny wave, intended to keep a distance from the man.

Tony could relate to the whole "irate dad perturbed at an interruption" thing; moreover, Howard's impatience with Tony drove the man to check his own irritation when it came to his kids. He didn't always succeed, but he liked to think he was doing a decent job at keeping the communication lines open when he failed. Tony never wanted a kid to feel like he did. Parental figures could really mess with the head. And Reginald? Well, Tony knew Reginald did one hell of a number on the Hargreeves siblings.

Tony was glad Ben agreed to meet with him. They only spoke a few times via the web board, but he was fond of some of his siblings and Ben seemed like a good kid deserving of a real life in Goodland. Tony wasn't a superhero because of radioactivity or a bite or serum, but merely because of a suit. However, that suit was born from Tony's mind so he liked thinking his brain was his superpower. Surely he could do something to help Ben like he once helped Vanya before she vanished. Tony, in fact, was working on something similar to the jewelry he created for Vanya when Ben appeared.

"Oh, Ben, hey." Tony had been hunched over an island examining something, but now he stood and gestured for Ben to move closer. "You good? Need something to eat? To drink?"

Ben tried to flash Tony a smile when he greeted him, a slightly lopsided grin, as he moved forward after a second of hesitation. He didn’t really know what to expect from Tony, other than that the older man seemed nice. As he moved more into the lab, he let his eyes wander over the parts and machines that were scattered about. Subconsciously, his arms wrapped over his torso as he came closer.

“No thank you, sir.” Ben said, naturally soft-spoken and well-mannered. Ben glanced at what he was working on, but didn’t really have a clue about how any of it worked. “Uh… Thank you for seeing me.”

Tony, not wanting to push, nodded. He noticed the boy holding onto himself, but didn't comment. His face was fixed with a neutral expression since he didn't want Ben to believe he was gawking. Tony truly wanted to help; Ben was no circus attraction to him.

"Anything to get me out of the office," he joked. He smiled as he returned to his seat next to the island. "Sit if you like," he added, gesturing toward a nearby chair. However, he didn't insist. Ben's body language read like he might flee, which Tony didn't want. "I was just working on something similar to the jewelry I used for your sister," he continued. "I know a bit about your powers, but..." He resumed working on his project in hopes Ben might open up if Tony wasn't looking at him the whole time. "The jewelry, ah, acted a bit like a mood ring. Do you know about those old things? Said to predict moods, but mostly just pick up on body temperature? Well..." He glanced up briefly. "The jewelry was able to absorb much of the impact of her powers, but, perhaps more importantly, it alerted her to when her body chemistry was getting off balanced. Does that make a bit of sense?"

“Uh.. but… isn’t this technically like… your office?” Ben furrowed his eyebrows slightly and he looked around again as he took a seat in the chair that Tony had gestured to. He nodded a little bit, when Tony tried to describe how the bracelets for Vanya worked.

“It’s sort of weird… that all of our powers are so different.” Ben said with a half shrug. He barely knew anything about Vanya’s power, he didn’t even remember her having any. Klaus had told him about them though, and how they were strong. “I don’t think… that mine is connected to any emotion in particular…. But when I had a panic attack, I couldn’t… I couldn’t get it to close.” And that was how his brother died. Ben was looking at his shoes now, not particularly wanting to see Mr. Stark’s reactions.

“I can open the portal… but then the Monster… it just sort of does what it wants. And then I close it when all the people are dead or whatever.” He didn’t like that part. He didn’t like how many people his father had made him kill. For the betterment of society, he’d told him, but he’d seen the thing rip apart someone who was good, and he had a hard time believing the whole thing. “To be honest, I don’t even know where the portal leads to.”

Tony chuckled at Ben’s confusion regarding the lab. “No, no, the lab is my home away from home.” He grew quiet then and waited for Ben to talk. He listened closely, nodding now and then as Ben recounted his story about the portal inside him. Tony wondered if the “monster” Ben mentioned could be safely extracted from the boy. “I’m not so sure it is a coincidence that you and your siblings all have dissimilar powers,” Tony said when Ben finished speaking. “Forgive my frankness,” he added, “but from what I understand your father didn’t always have your best interests at heart.” He knew he was putting it mildly based on what the older Klaus told him a few months ago.

Tony rubbed his temples as he thought about everything Ben told him. It was definitely a tricky case. “I think your panic could be a trigger…maybe not the only one, but a possible one. The thing could feed on fear too so perhaps it is not even your emotions it senses, but others.” Tony, fidgety as always, got up to pace. “Sorry, it helps me think better,” he admitted. “Moving around, I mean.”

He paused after a moment. “I think we could do something similar to what I did for Vanya. No harm in trying, hm? But instead of sensing the emotion, it will act as an enclosure. We’d need to be careful,” Tony continued. “We don’t want it turning on you.” Tony couldn’t bear the idea of causing another kid harm. “But if it is already inside you…you might be immune. Yes, yes, I think it could work. Oh, a temporary solution, of course, but until we can figure it out, I think this will allow you to feel more comfortable around others.” He snapped his fingers. “How do you feel about getting some of those with powers and pretty indestructible weighing in? They might be able to…to talk to it? Or at least withstand it.” He sucked in a deep breath. “Sorry, I get carried away. What do you think?”

Ben sighed a little bit when Tony mentioned their father, “He… he must have somehow known we all how powers… but he came for all of us… maybe hours after we were born. I don’t…” Ben just shrugged a little helplessly. So much of his life had been spent with unanswered questions. Nothing about their lives made a whole lot of sense. “I used to think he cared sometimes, especially when he made mom-- she was an android and she was… she was the only thing that seemed to really care about us… but that was really just to suit his purpose too… because it became too much of a liability to keep mortal nannies around us.” Ben frowned, and ran his non-casted hand through his hair.

“Yeah,” Ben just sort of nodded, because Tony’s guess was probably as good as his own at this point. “I dont-- I’m not really good with numbers or science or anything, if I’m being honest, but I thought maybe if there was just like…. Okay, this is probably going to sound dumb. But like… I like to think of the portal as like this door, right? And so sometimes I think that like… it would be cool if the door had like… a lock. Yeah? Just some additional security to make sure that it couldn’t open unless I really needed it too… because I’m afraid that one day like… one day the monster is going to learn how to open the door itself, right?” Ben rambled a little.

“Yeah, a lot of people mentioned that. Trying to talk to it. Mr. Barry said there was a device that could help it read my thoughts and vice versa, but I’m not sure it would work because I don’t know if it understands English, you know? And it requires this device and I’m not sure if I can put things in the portal… I’ve never tried. But yeah… I guess if we could find some people that it couldn’t hurt…” He bit his lip nervously.

“I just want to not hurt anyone, you know?” He said softly, “So we have to make sure that they are really… indestructible… because it will like… squeeze them, and try to rip them apart or like, bang them against the floor.” He let out a long sigh. “I just want to live a normal life you know? And maybe it’s not fair to the monster that it has to stay locked up forever, but I don’t… I don’t want it.”

Tony listened closely as Ben spoke about his mother and theory regarding the monster. Tony was glad Ben and his siblings had someone (something?) to look after them. He remembered when Klaus told him about her early on; some people might have found it sad, but Tony knew A.I, sometimes, could provide a comfort when those of flesh could not. However, he couldn’t help raising his eyebrows when Ben mentioned acting unfairly toward the monster. Damn, he really was a kind young man.

“Has anyone told you about the Hulk? He is otherwise known as Bruce Banner. He is a good friend of mine, but not here unfortunately. He has what he refers to as “the other guy” inside him. It comes out when he is angry. He couldn’t control it for a long time.” Tony paused as the memory of Bruce trying to invoke the Hulk in NYC became front and center. The Avengers from his future told him all ended well there, which was good, but Tony couldn’t help the twinge of concern that tugged at him over the memory. “Anyway,” he said as if someone interrupted him, “He found a way to make peace with the other guy. They became meshed so to speak. I think what you mentioned with the lock is a bit like that. I think I can help in that regard.” He gestured to what he had been working on before Ben stepped inside the lab. “Plus it will suck in the gut after a big meal,” he teased. “I’d need a few more hours to perfect it, but if you want it...we can try it? Totally up to you, kid.”

He smiled then. "And we can work on the rest after," he promised. "I am sure there is someone here who can withstand it." There had to be. "I know you don't want to hurt anyone. I won't put you in that position, I swear." He probably shouldn't have made that vow, but Tony could get ahead of himself. Plus he really did mean it; he'd do his best to help Ben keep from unleashing on someone.
