Neo & Max

What:</b> Random encounter
Where: In town
When: Evening
Warnings: Not likely
Status: Closed
Max hadn't been in Goodland for very long. It had only been a few days, but thanks to his time in the corn maze, it felt longer. He felt like he'd been in this crazy weird town for weeks, but the fact was he hadn't quite learned his way around, and it was easy to get turned around and confused and not where he thought he should be.

"Excuse me," he said to someone. She looked as lost as he was. He knew he wasn't really qualified to hep her if she needed directions, but he had to offer to help, and try to help her if he could. That was just who he was. He liked helping people. That was why he'd become a cop, after all. He couldn't use his abilities to help everyone, but he could help in other ways.

He flashed an easy, friendly smile. "Are you lost?" he asked.

Suddenly being in some random city she'd never heard of wasn't quite what Neo was expecting. She and Cinder had been heading to Atlas in hopes of finding Ruby and the Relic of Knowledge. The plan was that Cinder stole the Relic and Neo could kill Ruby for her role in Roman's death. Instead, she was now in some place called Goodland and she had no idea how that happened.

But Neo was adaptable and she just went with it. For the most part, anyway. She still wished she wasn't here. Maybe she'd find a way back, but for now, she was hungry and wanting to explore a bit. That way she could get a better idea of the place she was in.

Now she was looking for something to eat. She had paused to get her bearings, only glancing up when she heard someone approach her. She usually just ignored people, but she was hungry and this city was confusing at best. She took out her phone and typed, showing it to him once she was done.

Yeah. Do you know a place to grab a quick bite to eat?

For a moment, he thought she was just ignoring him, which fine. He could deal, wasn't the least bit offended. He was just trying to be nice, friendly, helpful. If she wasn't interested, so be it. If she was wary because he was a stranger, and a guy, that was fine too. He couldn't blame her. He knew he didn't have an ulterior motive, but she didn't, with the way things were in the world these days, a person had to be wary.

But then she showed him her phone and the message she'd typed. He read it, and nodded. "I do. There's a diner not far from here, I just passed it," he told her, using his voice and his hands. After he and Isobel were adopted by Mr and Mrs Evans, they'd learned sign language to communicate before they used words. If she didn't speak, maybe she signed.

"You can get just about anything you want there," he said. "I can show you the way."

Despite her tiny stature and somewhat cute exterior, Neo was anything but. She was a killer and she enjoyed it as well. She was sadistic and took pleasure in harming and tricking others. She was probably more dangerous than he was, but not at the moment. She was honest to god just hungry and wanted something to eat.

She watched, knowing he was using sign language, but she didn't quite understand. She probably should've learned but she'd been too busy. She just typed another message. If you're not too busy, that'd be great. Once she figured he'd read it, she gestured for him to lead the way.

She didn't seem to respond to the sign language, so he dropped that. He was pretty sure she could hear him, or at least read his lips. He had no idea she was a sadistic killer; he had his own secrets too. Most people did. As long as she didn't try to kill him, and he didn't see her trying to kill anyone else, he would prefer to remain blissfully unaware.

"Nah, I'm not too busy," he assured her. He started moving, and assumed she would follow. It felt good to actually help someone, even if it meant going a little out of his way. But on the other hand, once they got to the diner, he could take a minute to look at the map on his phone and try to figure out where he needed to go to get back to the Villas, so it wasn't totally going out of his way. Not that he cared. he liked helping people. That was why he'd become a cop, after all.

She couldn't read lips either. She didn't need to. She was mute, but she wasn't deaf, and she could hear perfectly fine. She did wonder if she should learn sign language, at least, to communicate a bit better. But she never had a reason to learn it so far.

She smiled as if saying thanks and followed him. She typed on her phone and tapped him on the shoulder, showing it to him. Name's Neopolitan, by the way but most call me Neo. She figured introductions would be good, even if she wasn't quite planning on seeing him much after this. It was more being polite and keeping up appearances than anything.

If Max sensed that she might want to learn sign, he'd be willing to teach her. It would be good for him too. He didn't use it often, had little need now that he used his voice and not his hands to talk.

He nodded in response to her smile. "Nice to meet you, Neo," he responded. "I'm Max." He offered his hand. "I'm from New Mexico. I've only been here a few days, but I'll try not to get us both lost." He smiled a wry smile to show he was joking. Mostly. He knew where the diner was, but he wasn't entirely sure how to get back to the Villas from there.

Never heard of New Mexico before. Or any of the places I've heard of so far. If she had to guess, Neo was definitely in another universe altogether. Though she never thought of multiple universes until now. All she knew was that this place was completely different from Remnant.

And you better not or I might just have to kill you. :P She added the little emoji at the end to indicate she wasn't serious. She could kill him and wouldn't feel bad about it either, but no, she wasn't actually going to do that just because he got them lost.

"They say people come from different worlds, so you're not alone." Max didn't know if this was his reality or not. He assumed probably not. But he'd never been to New York, and the pictures he had seen looked a lot like what he was seeing in front of him. Which didn't really mean anything. But at least it wasn't entirely strange and unfamiliar to him.

"New Mexico is a long way from here. And it's mostly desert," he told her. They approached the diner and he moved ahead to grab the door and hold it for her. He was a gentleman in that way, he always had been. He held doors for people. It was a simple act he could do to be respectful of others, whether he knew them or not.

It's nothing like my world. Not really. Neo typed as she walked alongside Max. Most of the places she'd been to in Remnant was a bit more high tech than this place. At least, from what she'd seen so far.

Doesn't sound like my kind of place, to be honest. Nah, she preferred the city. She smiled as he opened the door for her. If she was planning on tricking him, it would probably be easy. Luckily for Max, she really was just hungry and that was all she wanted right now was food.
