Buffy & Freddy.
WHO: Buffy Summers & Freddy Freeman
WHAT: Ooh, time to go sightseeing!
WHERE: Starts off at Freddy’s place, moves on from there.
WHEN: Sunday, some point after the morning of Christmas in June.
WARNINGS: Language maybe.
SPOILERS: Um.. not sure? Maybe for Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Shazam?

Buffy checked her wallet once more as she headed for the floor Freddy was staying in. She was sure she had enough for whatever they likely did, and she could try and improvise if she didn’t, but it didn’t hurt to triple check. She hadn’t exactly arrived with a bucket of cash. But she’d been wearing some jewelry that she pawned the other day in the off chance she didn’t find a job in time for next month’s rent. Plus she had ‘earned’ some extra when coming across some muggers during patrol. Luckily she hadn’t needed to buy a new wardrobe as of yet so her necessities had been kind of minimal so far. She knew she wanted to be sure Freddy had a good time and hoped whatever they did would be enough.

Goodland was a strange place, mirror of Manhattan that it was, but it seemed like the well known tourist spots still existed so there was still plenty to see and she was more than willing to hear any suggestions Freddy had. He seemed like a good kid and while he didn’t totally remind her of Dawn, he did remind her of some of the younger Slayers they had managed to locate and start training before her arrival here. And while none of them were ever exactly like Dawn, no one could be, they all seemed to trigger a big sister instinct in her. Maybe it was the whole shared power thing or the fact she had just started taking the whole oldest Slayer role to a new level. Whatever it was, it had her protective big sister senses on high, and the kid was already on her list of people she’d take a bullet for. Funny that. Her thoughts finally settling down after one last cash count, Buffy paused in front of the apartment door with a shrug. Whatever happened, happened. In the end, she wanted to explore and having company, even if it was a kid (or rather a teenager) was a hell of a lot more fun than adulting with adults. Confident in her choices and wallet contents, Buffy lightly rapped her knuckles on the door and waited.

Freddy had quite the shocking morning. He mentioned in passing about his family preparing for Christmas in his reality and then, this morning? He woke up to find Klaus, one of the coolest people he'd ever met, organized a whole Christmas morning for him and the other kids in Goodland. Freddy wasn't used to people outside his newest foster family doing such kind things so he was taken aback by the niceness. Needless to say he hugged a ton of people that morning and took more photographs than needed of the decorations, presents, and people. And now? His day was about to get better because Buffy wanted to go sight-seeing with him! He was a little concerned she'd think he slowed her down with his use of a cane, but he had gotten accustomed to hustling along Philly streets so could NYC (or Goodland, whatever) be much different?

Freddy was used to making money stretch thanks to years in the foster system. He arrived with some allowance left-overs and the entity gave the kids a little spending money each month. He was going to be on the look out for a few things he discussed with some new friends on his last web post. He planned to buy some and take photos of others.

"Hi!" He greeted Buffy when he stepped out into the hall. He liked having Buffy around; she reminded him of Mary, his oldest foster sister, who watched out for him. "How are you? Did you see Christmas?"

Buffy gave him a cheerful grin as soon as he showed his face and resisted the urge to reach out and ruffle his hair. “Hey, there!” She hadn’t gotten to go to the Christmas thing like she’d planned originally, mostly because she had gotten a little lost last night patrolling and when she got home she had ended up oversleeping. It was just as well, the cookies she’d tried baking hadn’t been nearly as edible as she’d hoped. “I did see it, I’m sorry I didn’t make it though.” On the plus side, it did mean she had more money for the day.

“So what kind of ideas do you have for today?” Buffy asked as she started to lead him down the hall. “I know I definitely need to check out Central Park, but I want to make sure we do what we can on your list first. I wouldn't be surprised if some of yours are the same as mine.” A lot of Buffy’s own things could be done at any point and she wasn't in any rush to do everything at once. “Did you bring some water? Sunblock? If not, I have a some in my bag,” she pat the simple messenger bag she had picked up the other day that was currently stuffed with some water bottles, minor snacks, and other touristy items needed for the day. She would have stashed a weapon, but the only one she currently had was the scythe and she couldn’t really hide it on her person today, so it was currently under her mattress at the apartment. “I think I have the basics. It’s the kind of stuff I remember my mom carrying when I was a kid and we went on trips.”

Freddy didn't think to bring anything other than his phone and money. He had Rosa and Mary to consider those things back home. "I don't have sunblock," he admitted. Granted, it was still winter in his reality so he was getting used to the change in seasons. "Oh, Audrey mentioned horses might be there! If there are, we need to take a pic for her. And I said I'd buy chocolate kisses for Laura. Can you believe she has never had one? She is like from another place way in the future or something!" He hobbled along the hallway after Buffy. He couldn't help noticing how pretty she was; they talked briefly at Alicia's pizza party, but Freddy's mind had been all over the place while in the crowd of people. He blushed a little, thinking about it. He also wanted to get star stickers for Nico if they came across some, but, for some reason, he didn't want to admit that to Buffy. "Have you ever been to NYC?" He asked, remembering his manners.

She instantly pulled a small bottle of sunscreen and once they were in the elevator, she tilted her head in question. “We have to get you suited for battle,” She held up said bottle, “You want to do it, or do I do the mom face and put it on your face and arms while you glare at me the way I glared at mine when I was a kid?” She wore a crooked smile, as if to say she wasn’t actually going to force him to do anything, but she couldn’t help but channel her mom in this moment. At least the usually sharp pang of missing her was a little less painful and more wistful this time. “Ooh, horses, horses are way better than cars. I can’t crash a horse. We are so doing- wait what?” Her words came to an instant stop at the undeniably horrible situation to come to her attention. “Laura’s never had chocolate kisses? That’s just wrong. It’s too bad we’re stuck here, if we were back home, we could take her to Hershey or something. But we'll fix it, we'll be her new chocolate dealers.”

Buffy shook her head, some of the light curls she had bouncing slightly, “Never been to NYC, other than a flight layover that didn’t give me time to look around. I grew up in L.A though, so at least the big city theme if familiar, even if the energy is different. I always wanted to go, mostly for shopping, but after Sunnydale sank we pretty much hopped around until we settled in Scotland.” It would have been nice to have had a real break, but even if she wasn’t the only Slayer anymore, there were still a lot of girls that needed help with their new status so the job was still her life. Maybe Goodland was her time off. Huh. That was something to really consider. “I’m going to think of this as my chance to finally see it like a normal person and get to have some fun. Haven’t gotten to do that in months.”

Freddy immediately accepted the sunscreen. "I'll do it," he said quickly. He could thinking of nothing more embarrassing than Buffy lathering him with the cream. "Thanks," he added as he spread it over exposed skin.

He actually knew what she meant by "Hershey" since he was from Pennsylvania. "Chocolate dealers," he repeated, grinning. "At least we can't get in trouble for that! Well, police station sort of trouble." However, as their elevator reached the bottom floor and she mentioned something about her - Sunnydale? Freddy guessed it was a place since it sank. "Wait," he said as he scurried off the elevator and handed her the lotion again, "Is that - was that your home? Sunnydale? It sank?

She wasn’t actually going to do it herself, after all, he wasn’t her kid, but she figured the ‘threat’ would be incentive. Buffy liked to think her mom would be proud of the tactic. “I bet if we tried hard enough we could get in plenty of trouble for it. Start a whole criminal empire built on dealing chocolate to chocoholics.” She wore a slightly devious smile as the wheels began to turn. “We could even own the police by controlling the flow of chocolate donuts.”

She took the sunscreen and it vanished into the bag and she nodded, bring her focus back out of the chocopreneur mafia she’d been starting in her mind. Apparently, her mind went to strange places without evil to fight. Huh. “Yeah, Sunnydale, California. Home of the hellmouth. But no one was left in it when we-” Her elaboration paused, though her footsteps didn’t. “Wait. I haven’t really dished out the whole Buffy backstory thing, have I.” She really was terrible at the whole secret/not so secret identity thing. She’d just been assuming that everyone had weirder or equally messed up lives as she did that it didn't matter.

Freddy laughed at the idea of being a dastardly underground chocolate dealer. They could wear dark hoods and slip it into laptop cases.

He trotted slightly behind Buffy, perfectly content to follow her lead. However, he definitely didn't follow what she was saying. Hellmouth? Granted, until a few weeks ago, he didn't think superheroes really existed either. If villains and heroes existed in his world, obviously they could exist anywhere. Was hellmouth something like that? "Is that a villain? And...do you mean everyone like...died?" He asked.

Buffy gave him a serious look and was reminded how he was just a little younger than she was when she was called. “Kind of. A hellmouth is a place mystical energy that can be used to open a way into hell or hell dimension. Whatever. Evil things gravitate toward it. And not so evil things too really, it’s like a magnet for supernatural things.” She shook her head, “As for the sinking town, everyone had evacuated by the time we closed it. By closing it, the place collapsed and poof insta crater.”

She held the door open for him as they headed outside and she instinctively basked for a moment in the daylight as she enjoyed the rain free moment. “To make a long story really short, I’m a Slayer. I have superpowers and slay evil demons, evil vampires, save the world from apocalypses, and even get to destroy evil robots sometimes.”

Hell. Like where Nico's dad ruled? The different realities were all very confusing. Were the angel and demon guys Freddy saw around the web board part of that too? "So like a superhero," Freddy suggested. "That is seriously cool, Buffy!" He pretty much bounced as he walked down the block with her. Well, bounced as much as he could with his cane. "Do you love it? Is it exciting? Scary? Did you have a mentor? How did you train?" His questions came out in a jumble.

“Kind of, just instead regular superhero stuff it’s supernatural stuff.” Superheroes didn’t usually deal with hell gods, did they? Maybe she should ask Andrew next t- nope. Scratch that, she wanted to keep her sanity intact. “Being a Slayer isn’t exactly something for me to love. I can’t turn it off and it’s something I have to do.” Buffy really didn’t want to break the cheerful idealism of it too much by getting into how much death was involved. “But yeah, I had a mentor. His name is Giles and he was, is, my Watcher. Watchers are usually stuffy British guys that train Slayers and do research while sitting on the sidelines doing nothing of use. But Giles is the exception and he actually helped out.” Okay, so she threw in a little of the old school annoyance at how Watchers used to work. But come on, they deserved it.

“I trained by, well, training. Fighting comes naturally to me. But I spar with Giles and others when I can. Do tai chi, meditate, that kind of stuff. Unlike most Slayers, I didn’t officially start training till I was like fifteen, when I was called. Before that, the closest training I had was some gymnastics and cheerleading.”

Freddy didn't know as much about the supernatural as he did about superheroes, but Buffy, super or not, was definitely finding her way on his list of favorite heroes. "That is totally cool," he replied. "Billy? My foster brother. He just became Shazam. That is a superhero. He is only 14, but when he says 'Shazam' he grows older and gets superpowers. It is really, really awesome." His expression fell. "He had a fight with a super villain before I got here. I hope he is okay."

The name didn’t ring any bells with her, but she could admit her superhero knowledge wasn’t great. She had the basics and of course Powergirl, but outside of them it could be pretty sporadic. “That’s pretty cool. What can he do?” His powers were probably cooler than hers were, which were pretty basic compared to actual comic book characters as far as she knew.

Buffy mentally frowned but nudged him gently with an elbow, “Hey, I’m betting he’ll be fine. He probably kicked the bad guy’s ass and is ready to party or something. ” She offered a genuinely encouraging smile. “As someone who’s fought a few villains that could be considered super, he might have taken a few hits, but I bet he came up swinging. It what heroes do.” Except when they don’t, but she wasn’t going to mention that. Sometimes the lies were what a person needed. She missed the days where she could have them.

Freddy nodded, but he remembered the villain throwing him against the wall and demanding his phone. Freddy tried to push him off, but it had been impossible. Then next thing he knew? He was in Goodland with no idea how his family fared back home. Still, he hoped Billy came through for them. He regretted the argument they had right before the villain showed up. Who was that guy anyway?

"Right," he said, forcing a smile. "So where to? Central Park?"

Oh good, subject change. That meant Buffy could focus on the distraction that was tourism and fun times. She could totally handle that. As in, she could hopefully use it as a way to distract Freddy from worrying. She nodded with a look of determination, “Aye, captain. I figure we start there, possibly get lost and then we’ll be forced to take over the park and rule it with our benevolent wisdom, and we’ll live off of street vendor’s for at least a week before convincing park goers to give us tribute in the form of pizza and cash.”

She paused for dramatic effect, “Or we could just explore, check out the animals, and eat a bunch of junk food while making fun commentary at things. And don’t worry, we’ll get those chocolate kisses at some point. I just don’t want them to melt before you get them to your friend.” She grinned at him and hoped her ridiculous plan was taken in stride.

"I think a Buffy/Freddy take over is in order." He grinned. "Or at least until we get hungry." It felt good to get out and about, especially with someone cool and fun like Buffy. "And thanks," he added. "I hope Laura likes them," he said, referring to the chocolate.
