Sam Winchester & Jake Green
What: A first meeting
Where: Library
When: Saturday
Warnings: Given the Supernatural and Jericho fandoms, talk of dark subjects possible. Will update if necessary.
Every night while he lay in bed unable to sleep, he wondered if this was the night he'd wake up from the dream. But when the sun began to peek through the windows and a new day began, he was still here. In Goodland, of Fake New York as some people were calling it. It didn't matter what he called it, it wasn't home, where his mother and his brother and Emily and Hawkins and Stanley needed him.

He'd been here a week and a half and counting. Not long, but too long at the same time. A lot happened in a week back in Jericho where the lights and the water depended on wind and sun to work, where TV and music and laughter were things of the past. Goodland was a stark contrast, with it's uninterrupted power and an entire city of people going about their lives.

As much as Jake would like to sit alone in his room and sulk himself to death, he couldn't do that. He occasionally had to get up and go out, and experience the life Goodland had to offer. Bright and early Saturday morning, he made his way to the library to see if he could find any useful information in the tomes and back issues of newspapers and whatever else he could find. He wasn't expecting much. Her definitely wasn't expecting to run into someone first thing.

"Sorry," he said. He hadn't collided with the other guy, but it was a near thing. "I wasn't paying attention." Which wasn't like Jake at all. He was usually hyperaware of his surroundings. He'd been that way even before the bombs, before he'd worked in Iraq. He'd been that way as a child. Moments of complete distraction were rare for him, and made him feel weak.

Sam had been in Goodland about a week. Actually, when he’d first arrived it had been Paris so really he’d only been in Fake New York for a few days. He wasn’t at ease by any stretch of the imagination - he should’ve been in Kansas with his family, helping with the Apocalypse world refugees, not the victim of an inter dimensional kidnapping. And the question of the entity behind said kidnapping was even more unsettling for him. Sam had had entirely too many dealings with Gods and wannabe Gods to be even remotely willing to accept that everything here was peachy. He also still hadn’t quite let go of the possibility that Lucifer somehow had something to do with it.

After he’d gotten over the initial shock, and come to terms with the fact that thus far there was no way out, he’d defaulted to usual habits. He’d stocked up on essential things - iron, salt, he’d even bought a rosary in Paris so he could make Holy Water. It wasn’t that he felt any immediate threat but it was prudent to be prepared.

Before long he’d found his way to the library, as he so often did when he didn’t know where to start with something. Pretty soon he was there most days, sometimes heading straight there after his morning run. Today had been one such morning.

Sam had been heading back from the coffee machine when he’d almost collided with another patron, narrowly avoiding spilling his much coveted caffeine fix in the process. “Don’t worry about it, it was my fault.” He told the other man. “I didn’t get you, did I?” He asked, indicating the coffee in his hand.

"No, we're good," Jake said. But damn the coffee smelled good. He was going to have to get himself some. Coffee was one of the things that disappeared quickly when society ceased to function properly, and had been a rare commodity after the bombs.

Now that he could access it again whenever he wanted, Jake was having to control himself. He didn't want or need to get jacked up on caffeine and it would be all too easy to do.

"Name's Jake," he added. Introductions seemed like the thing to do at this point. His gut instinct, and it was usually pretty reliable, told him this guy was someone he might want to have in his corner when shit hit the fan, which it was probably going to do one of these days. If the side trip to Paris was any indication, anything could happen. Jake wasn't naieve enough to think it would all be good.

Sam pretty much ran on coffee. The machine in the library wasn’t terrible, but it’s coffee did little more than sating the craving slightly given the amount of caffeine Sam was used to. Still, it was better than trying to function without it. “Good.” He nodded.

“Sam.” He said, offering his coffee-free hand in greeting. “You new here too?” He asked. Sam had little trouble allying himself with people, and he figured if he was going to be stuck here then there was no sense in isolating himself. After all, there was no telling what this place might throw at its involuntary residents, or when he might need to rely on others for help. Everyone he’d spoken to already seemed friendly, Jake included.

Jake gripped the offered hand with a firm shake. You could tell a lot about a man from his handshake, and Jake tried to convey strength and fairness in his. So far he was still of the opinion that Sam was a good ally to have.

"Yeah. Ten days or so," Jake said. Ten days away from Jericho. He wondered if Eric had stepped up to lead the town. For all that he was a type A, he was an ineffective leader. Maybe he'd surprise them all, if he was the best shot. Or maybe he'd run Jericho right into the ground. It really could go either way.

"Still not sure it's real, but it seems pretty intense and detailed to be a dream."

“I’ve been here about a week, I think.” Sam said, frowning slightly as he tried to add things up in his head. “I wasn’t exactly in my own reality before I got here so it’s a little hard to keep track of days.” He explained with a slight shrug.

Sam hadn’t initially discounted the possibility of a dream, or an augmented dream at least. Since it seemed pretty unlikely that he’d have dreamt up everyone here with such detail and nuance he’d settled on a potential theory that it was some kind of mass hallucination, a djinn powered hallucination. But even that threw up more questions than it did answers, and the djinn would have to be about the size of a blimp to have enough juice to pull this off. So he’d put that one on the back burner for now.

“Yeah, I know what you mean. All signs seem to be pointing to ‘real’ so far, crazy as it sounds.” And boy did Sam know crazy.

"How were you not in your own reality?" Jake questioned. "What does that even mean?" There was no judgement in his tone, he was genuinely curious. After more than a week in this place, he had realised everyone had a story, and some were a bit more science fiction than his, but he wasn't going to make assumptions without facts. Without information.

"It does sound crazy, but here we are," he said with a shrug. The fact they were in Goodland was undisputed. It was just a matter of where Goodland existed. If it wasn't rooted in reality, then however Sam answered the previous question was possible, Jake supposed.

It was a lot to wrap his head around, but he was trying.

Sam huffed out a short laugh. “Uh well, it’s kind of a long story, but the cliff notes version is that my mother and a friend we’re stuck in an alternate reality. A dangerous one. So my brother and I and two more of our friends went through a rift to rescue them.” He frowned slightly. “I ended up here when we were crossing back home.” He shrugged. “Not exactly what you’d call a typical Tuesday for most people, but for my brother and I it’s not actually too far off.”

He nodded. “Yeah, here we are.” Sam smirked slightly and took a sip of his coffee. “What about you? Where’d you come from?” He asked Jake with genuine interest.
