It had been a busy day at the clinic and Christine was exhausted. After keying in her code, she walked into her apartment, tossed her bag on a chair and sighed. A nice shower would be perfect, she thought and started in that direction but suddenly she felt a wave of nausea and dizziness hit and she stumbled, falling into a chair and then everything went white. When she opened her eyes, she was lying face down on a floor that didn’t belong to her and she pushed herself up and looked around. As soon as she saw the ostrich peering back at her, she knew exactly where she was. “I will be damned,” she said. “I’m back.” It was then that the letter appeared in front of her and she read it, shaking her head. Well at least this place hadn’t been that bad, she thought as she stood up and then she heard a familiar voice yelling and insulting one of the ostriches’ mothers and she laughed. She wasn’t alone this time. Finding him wasn’t hard and when she saw him, Christine stopped for a minute and listened and then she laughed. “You know, I’m pretty sure they don’t understand English,” she said Leonard was glad to have his feet on solid ground again, but that hadn’t made him appreciate the damn ostriches or the vague note from some Entity any better. Solid ground of not, he didn’t like being pulled away from his life without warning or consent. And the damn ostrich had crapped on his shoe. “Not the point,” he grumbled, but he couldn’t help smiling as he took in the sight of Christine. He’d just left her mere days ago, knowing it could be years, at least before he saw her again. He wasn’t exactly disappointed to be reunited with his old friend so much sooner. She grinned back at him and then laughed even harder when she saw him look at his shoe. “Oh my god, she got you, didn’t she?” Christine had no idea if the ostrich was male or female, she had no idea how you could tell but since there seemed to be more here than there were before so one of them had to have laid an egg. “I see you got your welcome letter. Have you read it yet?” She was dying to know where the Entity had put him because there were a few people that Christine would love to see his reaction to. There was also the fact that she didn’t know who was still here. “Damn ostriches,” Leonard grumbled. That was probably answer enough and he was sure Christine was just loving it. She was probably going to give him shit about it forever now, too. He glanced up again at her question about the note. She seemed a hell of a lot calmer than he felt. Why wasn’t she as weirded out by this whole thing as he was? “Yeah, I read it,” he said. “Did you?” She nodded. “Yeah, it’s just like before. Looks like we’re in the same apartment.” That had been a surprise but not an unpleasant one. Maybe the Entity was making assignments based on who knew who these days. Then she saw the look on Leonard’s face and she realized that he probably thought she was nuts. “I know this is going to sound crazy,” she said. “But I’ve been here before. I guess it was about a year ago? I was here for several months so this is all familiar to me. It’s some kind of alternate universe, pocket dimension thing. We’re still back in our timeline too and when you go back, it’s as if you never left. I remembered things about being here but that faded eventually but as soon as I woke up here, everything came back.” Christine shrugged. “I can’t explain it. No one can. It might even blow Spock’s mind if he were here, it’s just that strange.” “You’re right. It does sound damn crazy.” Coming from anyone else, he might have thought they were just messing with him, but with Christine.. He knew her well enough to tell the difference. It was freaking crazy, but if Christine said she’d been here before, he believed her, no matter how insane it sounded. “So, what do we do now that we’re here?” “Just…….live,” she shrugged. “It’s crazy, lots of weird shit happens and despite the fact that you can see present day Manhattan outside, it’s not all of New York City. Every now and then we go somewhere else. One day we woke up and we were in Paris. It was freaky, no matter what window you looked out of, you could see the Eiffel Tower. There were people here before who were pulled right from the moment of their deaths and got a second chance at life here. People from other centuries even.” Christine reached out and gave him a playful punch on the shoulder. “Come on, let’s go find where we’re staying. Oh yeah, there will be clothes and stuff for you in the closet. It’s like they knew you were coming.” This was all pretty damn weird, but Leonard was comforted knowing it was a place Christine knew and that she seemed to be comfortable here. If he had to be kidnapped to another dimension and be stuck back in the damn dark ages, at least he had her to show him the ropes. “Alright, Christine,” he said aloud, “lead the way.” “Come with me then, I’ll show you around. It might have changed some but we’ll figure it out.” she grinned at him and headed down the hall toward the elevators. She was glad he was here because even though she’d been here before, there were times when she’d missed the familiarity of home and quite honestly, had missed him. At least this time, they were in this together. |
