Who: Liz and Max
What: Reuniting
Where: Near the apartments
When: Last night
Warning: The power goes out again. Sorry not sorry.
Max had never put so much effort into anything in his whole life, but still, Rosa wasn’t stirring. She looked less...burned, he supposed, but her heart wasn’t beating yet, she wasn’t alive. He could feel his own strength ebbing as he poured so much effort into bringing her back, but he had to do more. He had to bring her back, to make up to Liz all the hurt his family had caused her. If he could bring Rosa back, then she could truly be happy, and they could put the whole past behind them.
He closed his eyes, taking several deep breaths and working to regain some of his strength. When he felt a little better, he opened his eyes only to find...he was nowhere near the cave in Roswell. He blinked several times, wondering for a moment if he was having some sort of vision, but it was too real for that, and anyway, Noah was dead and Isobel wouldn’t do that to him.
He stood, his heart beating faster. Where was he? How had he gotten here? It was obviously a big city, but he couldn’t identify it. He’d never really been out of Roswell, except for their 9th grade trip to Washington, DC. The panic increased, and he wrung his hands together as he took a few steps forward, the streetlight above him hissing before it shattered into a thousand pieces with a pop of electricity.
Where was he?
“Liz?? Isobel?? Michael??” Nobody answered, of course, although some people around him looked at him strangely. He reached in his pocket to grab his phone, only to find that it was gone. In its place was a note, and another phone that was very much not his.
When he read it, he felt himself going into a full blown panic. What the hell???
He clenched his hands, trying to hold in his fear, his terror, his confusion, and all the emotions that were butting against the emotions of the last few days. It didn’t work. He fell to his knees, his hands in front of him on the ground, as the lights went out for blocks and blocks around him.
***
After getting her hopes up about Max being the cause of the first outage, Liz had been on a bit of a bender the entire week. When she wasn’t at work, she was at the Wild Stallion drinking away her sorrows.
She didn’t want to be the girl that needed a man to make her happy but it had happened. She needed Max and he wasn’t there. She’d just finally found happiness then she got pulled away from it against her will. It wasn’t even remotely fair. The entire thing was making her downward spiral back to a Liz Ortecho that she didn’t like but there was no stopping it. She was just so unhappy.
More than a bit tipsy that night, she was walking back to the apartments when she saw the streetlamp shatter. Jumping and nearly losing her balance, she looked over in that direction curious what happened. Figuring it was just a random light bulb breaking, she shook her head continued on her way only to stop again when she heard a familiar voice.
No. It couldn’t be.
She had to be hearing things, right? She couldn’t get her hopes up again. Turning her head in the direction of the voice, she listened for it again and when she didn’t hear it, she frowned. “I need to stop drinking so much” She muttered to herself in Spanish as she continued on. It was only when the whole block went dark did she realized she had not heard things.
“Max?” She yelled out into the darkness while fumbling for her phone so she could use the flashlight feature on it. With as many drinks as she had, it wasn’t easy to
find. “Max, call out! Where are you?” He had to be here. This outrage was him. She just knew it.
***
Liz’s voice was the last voice he’d ever expected to hear, but he would know it anywhere. He’d heard it over and over in his dreams over the past ten years, and there was no mistaking it for anything else. Liz was here too? But he’d just seen her…
“Liz!” he cried out, taking a step in the direction of the sound. “Liz, I’m over here!”
He turned on the flashlight on his phone and pointed it up so that hopefully she’d be able to see it and come find him. And hopefully, tell him what the heck was going on.
***
Turning towards the sound of his voice, she gave up on finding her phone and blindly stepped out onto the street as she began walking towards it.
Seeing the light, it gave her a direction to go in and she headed that way, not even thinking about the cars on the road. When one nearly hit her, she stopped long enough to yell at the driver in Spanish for not seeing her, then she continued towards the light.
When she nearly stumbled and fell on her face while stepping onto the crub, luckily Max was there to catch her. She wrapped her arms around him, she held onto him like she was afraid he’d disappear if she let go too soon. “I’m so glad you’re finally here. I’ve been so miserable without you”
***
Max could smell the alcohol on her, but he held her tight regardless. He didn’t know why she’d been drinking, but it didn’t matter and he didn’t care. What mattered to Max was that she was here now and they were together. They could figure out everything else later.
Well, except for…
“Liz, where are we? And how did we get here? And...what do you mean without me? I just saw you a few hours ago.”
***
Pulling away from the embrace, she put her hands on his face and felt it like she needed to make sure he was real. People were knowne to hullicnate while drinking and while she had never had, there was a first time for everything. It would make sense that she was so desperate to see Max that her mind would make up him being there.
“Did you find your letter? It explains everything. I can’t really answer much beyond what’s in there. I don’t really understand any of it myself” She replied him with a shake of her head before she frowned. “I arrived here alone three weeks ago” She went on as she moved her hands down to rest on the back of his neck. Just like at home, she couldn’t stop touching him. “The last time I saw you it was at your house before I took Isobel home after you two went into Noah’s mind”
Yeeeah a lot had happened to her since then. She had so much to catch him up on.
***
Oh, wow. She’d...missed a lot. Including them making love for the very first time. That was...awkward. But he wasn’t going to bring that up right now. Not yet. There were too many other important things to figure out just now.
“Yeah, I found it. I just...wasn’t sure what to make of it. I mean...how? And why?” Those were two questions of thousands that filled his mind right now, and just the first two that came to mind. “How can that possibly be real? And how can you have been here for three weeks, but back in Roswell for three weeks, too?”
He knew that if there were any scientific answer for it, Liz would know. She was one of the smartest people he knew.
He put his hands gently at her waist, letting her touch him however she wanted. Any touch from Liz was welcome. Always.
***
“I completely overlooked mine and had to read Maria’s later” She admitted with a laugh. Finding him had been her concern and nothing else had mattered at the time other than the pain that had been radiating from her stomach.
When he began asking why and how, she helped a hand up to stop him. “I have no idea, Max. No one does. We’re all just here with our lives up to the whims of this Jubilant Entity … thing … and we can’t leave. All I know is that we’re in some version of Manhattan from what I’ve seen, it’s all the same” She told him, her hand moving to rest on his chest as she talked.
“That’s a question for Sober Liz to answer because I’ll be real with you, I’m a bit drunk right now” Maybe Sober Liz wouldn’t know how to answer his timeline question either but she would have a better chance of knowing it than drunk Liz at the moment.
***
Max just smiled softly at that. He didn’t know why she’d been out drinking, but he wasn’t going to judge her. He felt a bit like drinking himself right now, with all the overwhelming strangeness of this place.
“Come on then,” he said, turning towards the road and putting an arm around her to support her. “Let me escort you home, Miss,” he grinned. He wasn’t wearing his uniform, but he would always be a cop on the inside. He just couldn’t help it.
“Uh, where is home?”
***
With a smile, she leaned against him as his arm went around her and she began fumbled for her phone again.
“My hero. What would I do without you?” She asked, leaning up to kiss him on the cheek. Or atleast, what she thought was his cheek. It was pretty hard to see things at the moment with how dark. Even the light of the moon wasn’t helping much. Once she found her phone, she put the address of the apartments into the navigation and let them lead them. “Follow the voice” She told him. Thank God for phones because she really had no idea where she was going in the dark.
“Home also includes Michael and Maria. I was just placed in an apartment with them last week” She told him as they began walking in the direction that the voice on her phone told them to go. She had the flashlight on too so they could be able to see. “We’ll have to see where they placed you in the morning. For tonight you can just stay with us” That was her way of saying she really didn’t want him leaving her that night.
***
“Michael and Maria are here too?” He hadn’t expected that. This place was just getting weirder and weirder by the second. “And you all live together? That’s got to be awkward.” Especially as he knew how Michael felt about Maria and how complicated that would make everything.
He was really trying to be lighthearted, for Liz’s sake, but he was freaking out more and more as they walked towards the apartments, which were still in the dark, it looked.
“Sorry,” he said. “About the lights, I mean.”
***
“It’s been definiately been interesting” She replied with a small laugh.
“During the day they bicker like an old married couple and at night they’re so loud I either play music to drown them out or sleep with earplugs in. Other than that it hasn’t been so bad” She went on with a shrug of her shoulders. Now with Max here she’ll either have someone to distract her at night or a place to sleep where it’s nice and quiet. Either way, she wasn’t going to be alone at night anymore and it was going to be really nice.
“They’ll be fine” She commented as she looked up at the apartments as they approached them. “Someone or something fried the fuse box last week and Cisco had the power up again within a few hours. I’m sure he’s probably already working on it”
***
Max actually blushed a little at that. “So they’re actually...together,” he said, obviously. He was happy for his brother, even if he didn’t understand exactly how his mind worked. Despite his difference with Michael, and their frequent fights, he did love him and wanted him to be happy. He was just afraid that he never really had been.
“I wish I could...you know, control it Stop it from happening. But it’s not like I can tell people what I can do and try to get help.” He’d end up in a lab, or in a prison like Michael had told him about.
At that thought, he turned to LIz.
“Does anyone know? What I am - what Michael is?”
***
“Every damn night” Liz told him with a loud throw her head back kind of laugh. Despite complaining about it, she was very happy for the two of them and her joking about it showed that much. She was thrilled that the two of them had finally worked it out, even if what they worked out as was a little unconventional. It was never something she could do but it worked for them. “They’re in this open relationship … thing. I don’t completely get it but whatever works for them, right?” She told him, snuggling up to him as they got closer to the apartments.
It then occurred to her that they’d have to walk up four flights of stairs because the elevators weren’t working and she groaned. She was doing to be dead by the time she got up there. Why did she wear heels that night?
Shaking that thought out of her before Max could even ask her what was wrong, she grinned up at him. “Uh hello. You’re romancing a brilliant scientist, remember? I can help you! I have my own lab. We can get to work on what we started back home and help you control it”
When he asked the question that he did, she shook her head. “Just Maria”
***
Max didn’t particularly like the idea of listening to his brother have sex every night. Actually, he didn’t like the idea even one bit. But that was something he’d take up with Michael, not with Liz. So he just shook his head a little. He himself couldn’t imagine being in an open relationship. To him, love was about commitment and trust...how could you have either if you both expected the other to be stepping out on you with other people? Plus, he couldn’t imagine himself wanting anyone except Liz, ever.
“Yeah,” he grinned. “I am. And you won’t lock me up in a cage and do horrible experiments on me.” He paused for effect before cocking an eyebrow. “Right?” He knew she wouldn’t, but he just had to tease her a little to lighten the mood.
“Michael told Maria, I’m guessing? Or did she figure it out on her own?” Maria DeLuca was a smart woman, but there was a good chance Michael had told her, too. He didn’t like secrets, any more than the rest of them, and it wasn’t like he could say anything after having told Liz.
***
She grinned too. “I mean the experiments I’d perform on you would not be horrible. They’d be more … “ She paused for emphasis then leaned up and whispered in his ear. “Sexy” For her, they hadn’t taken that step yet but inebriated Liz couldn’t stop herself from going there. What he said just begged for her to take the conversation there.
Pulling away enough to see his face again in the mood light, she leaned in and kissed him, happiness radiating from her as their lips touched. She hadn’t laughed and smiled this much since she arrived because she’d been there without him. She already felt herself being pulled out from the depths of darkness she had been slowly falling into just being around him. She held the kiss for a long moment then she pulled away when she was forced to breathe, the smile never leaving her face.
“He did and then she got on my case for me never telling her. Oops” She told him with a small laugh, her hand reaching down to take his. “I just told her it wasn’t my secret to tell. That I already betrayed you once by telling Kyle and that I couldn’t do it again with her”
***
Max didn’t mind kissing her at all. He’d kiss her for the rest of his life, if he had the choice. But of course, he had to eat, sleep, work, and all those little boring things in between. He held it as long as she did, and when they pulled apart he ran his fingers through her hair, looking at her with wonder and almost a bit of disbelief that she actually returned his feelings. How had he gotten so lucky?
“I trust Maria,” he said with a shrug. As much as he trusted anyone, anyway. “And Michael has the right to tell her, I guess. I mean, I told you.”
He’d gotten a lot of shit from his family for that, too, but he’d had to. And, yes, he’d wanted to.
***
“Maria DeLuca is the most trustworthy person we’ll ever know” She told him in a matter of fact way as she turned and walked with him towards the building. She had the utmost confidence in her oldest friend her and her ability to keep the secret that the four of them now shared. She knew Maria better than anyone and vice versa. “I’m glad she finally knows. It wasn’t right for her to be the only one kept in the dark”
Turning the GPS off when they got to the building, she walked in with him and headed with him to the stairs. Four flights later, they were where they needed to be and she was dramatically leaning against him, acting like they’d climbed twenty flights instead. “My feet are killing meeee” She whined, handing him her phone so he could focus the flashlight on the door, allowing her to open the door easily.
When the door was open, she practically fell in and she laughed at herself for it. She could be such a clumsy drunk. She took a moment to steady herself then she listened. “I think they’re sleeping already” She whispered loudly when she didn’t hear Michael and Maria’s moaning.
***
Max supposed she was right about that. She was Liz’s best friend and had feelings for Michael - those were two reasons right there why she wouldn’t go and tell everyone that they were aliens. He didn’t know if this place would be the same as Roswell if they got found out, but he certainly wasn’t comfortable letting anyone else know. The four of them were fine. There didn’t need to be anyone else, not yet anyway. If it turned out that this place was different...well, he wasn’t even going to hope that yet. He had way too much to figure out first - like how they’d gotten here in the first place.
He shook his head as they reached the top of the stairs, and took her phone with a laugh. He wasn’t winded at all, but of course, he had normal shoes on and wasn’t drunk. “Exactly how much did you have to drink?” he asked. He didn’t care that she was drunk - he knew it wasn’t exactly a normal thing for her and that she probably had a good reason for it regardless.
Once they were inside, he kind of half carried her into her bedroom, making sure she was comfortable before kissing her on the forehead.
“Get some sleep. We’ll talk more in the morning.”
He’d sleep on the couch tonight.
***
“Enough to make me stop missing you” She told him as she struggled to get the door open. Things were hard to do when drunk, okay?
Her statement spoke volumes to what not how well she had been dealing with being away from him these past few weeks. As much as she tried to hide it and pretend she was fine, she had definitely not been fine and cracks in her armor were starting to show. Thankfully, with him here now, she could say she was fine and really mean it. She would be more than fine, even. After she got through her handover tomorrow, that is. Thank God she didn’t have to work!
She allowed him to carry her into the bedroom and together they got her shoes off, which would have been quite the task if she had to do it herself. Not bothering to change, she laid down and smiled as he practically tucked her in.
“Can you stay with me until I fall asleep?” She asked as she rolled onto her side to face him. “You can move to the couch after if you want. Please? I don’t want you to leave yet. I’m afraid you’re a figment of my drunk imagination and that you won’t be here in the morning”
***
“Yeah,” he said softly. There was really nothing that he wanted to do more than be here with her, close to her. He lay down on top of the covers next to her, rolling over to face her.
“I”m not going anywhere.” He wasn’t exactly sure that was true, because he didn’t really seem to have much control over being here or not. But if he did have a choice, he’d never leave her. Not ever. He didn’t even know if he actually could without breaking his own heart. He’d tried for ten years to get over her, and it hadn’t worked. He had no reason to believe it would ever work.
“Get some sleep. You’ll feel better in the morning. Maybe.” She might feel worse, actually, but at least they’d be together.
***
“I hope not” She said as she rolled over to face him. Leaning over, she gave him a sweet kiss then laid her head down on her pillow, a content smile on her face as she shut her eyes. Feeling the need to touch him as she fell asleep, she reached an arm over the cover and took his hand in hers. This place wasn’t going to be so bad now that she was there with her. Completely comfortable and at peace with him beside her, it didn’t take her long to fall asleep and she was sleeping so well that she didn’t even notice when he left her room to go sleep on the couch some time later.
