james rogers | arrival

James Rogers & Torunn Thorsdottir
March 14th | James Arrives in Goodland
Torunn is there to welcome him back
RATING: TBD | Warnings: TBD
IN PROGRESS ⍟ OPEN

The broken shield felt heavy strapped to James' back in a way that had nothing to do with how much it actually weighed. They'd beat Ultron, with some help from the Hulk, but there was still a lot of work to be done. He was exhausted — they all were — but there was no time to rest right now. There was no time for celebrating the victory just one when there was so much left to be done and James could feel the weight of who his parents were, who he was supposed to be, more than ever.

He shrugged off this fatigue and turned his focus to the work ahead. He tried, to, anyway, but he must have closed his eyes for a second, because the next thing he knew, he found himself opening them again to find himself standing in a very different version of Grand Central Station than the one he'd seen. It was as if someone had dialed back the clock to a time before the Scavengers, before Ultron. People bustled around him, going about seemingly normal lives and his friends, his family was no where to be found. Ready to fight if he needed to, James scoped out his surroundings, but there wasn't a clue to be found as to what had just happened until he spotted the note floating toward him.

Welcome to Goodland? James read the note three times, but none of it started to make any more sense. There were directions to a place called Ostriches Villa and the number of an apartment it claimed was his. That part, he got, but there were still a lot of unanswered questions and with them the need to get back home, to get back to his mission. That was one thing that was missing from the note and it was a more pressing question than how he'd gotten here in the first place. How the hell was he supposed to get back.

Torunn was on her way back from Sunday sparring lessons. She always felt good and invincible after a good session, like she was born to be a warrior. Granted, there wasn't always a reason to fight in Goodland, but when the opportunity arose, she was always ready.

She spotted the cracked shield first. Could it be? She'd gotten used to losing James in Goodland, but that didn't mean she ever felt okay with it. "James?"

James' relief at the sound of a familiar voice was palpable and he couldn't help almost grinning as he turned to spot Torunn. "Tor?" It was phrased like a question, but obviously it was her. James had known Torunn almost his entire life. He didn't have a single clear memory that she wasn't a part of and it was such a relief to see her.

"Where are the others?" he questioned her. "Azari, Pym, Francis?" It was disconcerting that he'd just been with them and now they were nowhere to be found.

"Pym is here," she replied as she closed the distance between them. "But this isn't exactly what you are used to," she quickly added. "How much do you know so far?" She wondered if someone else filled him in on anything or if he'd gotten the same letter she had when she arrived. "This is Goodland."

"I read the not," he admitted and shrugged. "It didn't make much sense." All he had to do was look around to know this wasn't what he was used to. It was obviously Manhattan or a good likeness, but it lacked the devastation he'd seen so recently. That could only be a good thing, right?

"How did we get here? Why does Goodland look like Manhattan, but not our Manhattan? How do we get home?"

"We don't," she said. "At least not until the Entity is ready." She had so much to tell him, but she didn't want to overwhelm him either. Still, she knew if she didn't, someone else would dump on him and...well, she was his sister. Better coming from her. "It is a replica," she said. "We are in another reality, James. It is crazy, but I've been here over a year. I'm fifteen. Pym just got here a few weeks ago. And Tony is here, but he is from a different reality than ours." She needed to work in Steve and Natasha, but how? "And...my dad is here. Also from a different reality. I live with him." There. That could ease him into it. Hopefully.

It sounds crazy, but at the same time it wasn't that wild considering their lives. He wasn't completely unfamiliar with the multiverse theory, but it was still pretty weird to be living it.

"Fifteen?," he managed to choke out. If she'd been here over a year and was still a year younger than him, well, he could do that math. "I'm sixteen," he offered a beat later, figuring she could do the math, too. It seemed pretty obvious to him that he'd lived through things she hadn't, if she was that young.

"What are they like?" he asked. "The other Tony and your dad. Are they like ours at all?"

She could do the math alright and it still bugged her, but there was nothing she could do about it. She learned some of her future in Goodland and it was pretty good so she couldn't complain, but she hated not having the same memories her brother did. "Dad is totally different," she admitted. "He actually likes being my father. And Tony? He is pretty much the same, just younger. He has other kids here, but he still claims us." She shrugged. "And Bruce is here too, but he is not the Hulk. Well, at least only some of the time." She bit her bottom lip. "And other Avengers too..."

Hope surged through James before he could stop it and the question way in his eyes before he could voice it aloud. There had been a lot of Avengers and just because she was saying there were others didn't mean...

But there weren't a lot who would mean enough to him that she should proceed with caution and he wanted that to mean—

James tried to push down that thought, that hope, as he somehow found his voice long enough to ask is a soft voice "Who else, Tor? Just tell me."

"Natasha and Steve are here," she replied, glad he pushed her to answer. "Not from our world, but they are here." She didn't know either one extremely well, but she knew James had been working on relationships with both before he vanished. She hoped they'd be open to it again for her brother's sake. She reached out to put a hand on his shoulder if he was receptive to it.

James wasn't always the most touchy feely or affectionate, but the simple touch helped to ground him in the moment as he worked to process what Torunn had just told him. His parents were here. Not quite his parents, because they weren't from the same world or timeline or whatever, but they were still something, right? Maybe the closest thing to his real parents that he'd ever get to know. "They're.. what are they like?" he wanted to know.

"They're not together here," Torunn said. "Natasha is actually with Clint Barton. Clint has kids here too. I think you'll like Nate. He's a friend of mine." She shrugged. "Steve seems pretty much what Tony told us about the Soldier. He lives with Bucky Barnes here." She shot James an encouraging smile. "I'm sure they'll like you."
