Who: Bucky Barnes & Steve Rogers
What: Talking about ~things
When: A couple days post-monsters
Where: Their apartment to start
Warnings: Not likely; will update if necessary

After a long day working at the gym to make the place presentable again, Bucky headed back home for the evening. He'd boarded up windows and replaced the front doors. Some of the equipment had been damaged, but most of it had been strewn all over or outside on the street. Collecting it all took some time, and he made notes of what would need to be tossed or replaced. There was a gaping hole in the middle of the climbing wall, but that wasn't high on his to-do list for now.

He still had plenty of work to do before opening, but he wasn't worried about that when the rest of the city was still in shambles. On the way home to the villas, he assisted in a couple of clean up efforts where he could. Now that the studio was more or less in as good of shape as it could be for the time being, he planned to help out elsewhere in locations that needed the most help. If someone wanted to have a session to help with their own confidence for defending themselves, he'd make time, but it would still be a while before he opened back up for regular classes.

Finally arriving back home, he took a long shower to wash the grit and stress off from the day. Well, long for Bucky's standards but probably still faster than most. Once out and dressed, he planned to find something to eat before going back out again. While it was no secret that Bucky enjoyed the quiet and moments of solitude, he'd especially sought after it today and was a big reason why he'd spent more time at the defense school. His conversation with James the night before hadn't sent him reeling exactly, but it still had brought up memories he'd rather not confront again. It bothered Bucky how much James didn't seem to understand the underlying reason why Bucky of all people wouldn't want to pass on the serum to anyone, especially Steve's own son.

He was shrugging on a t-shirt when he walked into the kitchen and saw Steve in the living area. "Hey," said Bucky, giving him a nod. "You coming or going? I was about to make a sandwich and head back out to see who may need some help."

Between fixing minor chips out of paint, to repairing entire walls and foundations, Steve had been making his way through clean-up sites. It was certainly a needed palette cleanser to the chaos that had been raining down on them. There was no moment to take breath; to really breathe. Not yet. Not when people were without a job, a comfortable place to sleep, or spending ample amounts of time in Medical.

Steve had been spending enough time there as well after James has been reported as injured. There hadn't been a lot of questions asked on the circumstances. He didn't need to know them. All he knew was that there were people - kids - in there because of the current threat. Powered, gifted, able, or not, it hit Steve too hard. The reminder of people who couldn't protect themselves from Thanos.

Of him not being able to protect people from Thanos.

Too much weighed on his mind as he made his way back to the apartment. His guard was down and he'd barely taken note that someone was back. Not many people could catch Steve by genuine surprise, but Bucky did. Enough that Steve's shoulders visibly twitched.

"Just got in. Thought about the stew Wanda mentioned." There was the thought of not being able to eat, but that was a pure lie. He needed the sustenance. Thanks, serum.

"I could settle for a sandwich though," Steve mused with a forced grin. "Are you treating?" he questioned, gesturing to the fridge. He was already grabbing some plates.

"She does make a good stew." Bucky had a handful of meals he could make, but between him, Steve, and James, they'd all probably be pretty screwed if not for Wanda helping to take care of the three of them. "I had my serving late last night, but I think there's still some left." He was already gathering a couple items from the fridge and the bread to make the sandwiches.

"Some to go with your sandwich since you're a growing boy." Bucky flashed a subtle smile, but Steve knew him more than well enough to catch the teasing tone. He'd gone for the roast beef for himself, so he started laying out four pieces of bread instead of just the two.

"How's it looking out there?" He asked, glancing up briefly but kept his eyes focused on the counter for the most part.

"I spent most of the day finishing up a few things at the gym, but I was going to head out after this to see what may need repairing. Well, what might need repairing first, anyway."

Practically the entire city needed some repair or another. Certain parts were worse where monsters had been concentrated, especially the areas immediately around the villa, but there was still a lot left to do elsewhere too.

"You alright?" Bucky looked up at Steve this time. "You hadn't been here long before all of this happened."

Steve chuckled and set the plates aside on the counter before settling beside Bucky. His arms crossed, a grin still on his face, Steve nodded. "Always looking out for me. Can't imagine where I'd be if you weren't." Placing a hand on Bucky's shoulder, metal instead of skin, Steve didn't flinch. He didn't waiver or even have a moment of recoil. Instead, he gave it a careful squeeze before once more crossing his arms.

Giving the sandwich construction a casual glance, the smile soon faded and Steve sighed. It was a heavy one wracked with the immense guilt that Steve Rogers - Captain America - carried with him far too often when it came to situations such as this.

"I don't even know where we can all begin. People are trying their best to get things moving. It's hard to take in, though. I can't help but think about places like Sokovia that were completely destroyed because of stuff like this."

Pinching the bridge of his nose, Steve looked almost crestfallen. A look not many people got to see with him, but Bucky was different. He would understand.

"It's a lot but it's what I do, right? Go from one battle to the next. Keep the faith alive." It was just getting much harder lately.

Amusement on his face, Bucky raised a brow. "Off somewhere trying to bait someone into giving you a pounding," he teased. The look waivered a moment, though, because Bucky half-wondered where Steve actually would be if not for him. Likely in the ground due to old age after a full life. The point of no return hadn't been when he became Captain America but when he'd found Bucky in that HYDRA facility. What would have happened if he'd never been found or had simply died like so many of his other brothers on the battlefield?

That was a thought for another time, he was finishing up the sandwiches when he glanced up to listen to what Steve was saying. Studying his face, Bucky noticed that he looked tired. Not in the obvious way that most people would be, but it was a look he recognized and had seen more than once given recent events back home. Well, recent for Bucky since he'd missed out on five years, not as much for Steve.

"Rebuilding takes time, always does, but because of the different types of people here, we might have it better than after events at home." Sokovia, New York, Germany... DC. "But you're right. It sometimes seems like we can't escape it no matter what we do."

Bucky slid a plate and sandwich over to him and thought about what Steve was saying. He'd been fighting or hiding for so long that he wasn't sure what it would feel like to stop. The closest he'd ever felt to stopping had been here - just not recently.

"It's not always like this," he remarked. "I've shown up here twice, and this was the worst it's been. I know they had some rough patches during the months I was gone, but this is the worst it's been since I've been back. It does slow down eventually."
