Who: James and Open to Multiple visitors

James had passed out somewhere in between Laura moving them into the medical bay, and Sam hovering over him. He had tried to stay awake, but his whole body had fought him, and the pain eventually overwhelmed him. When he woke up the first time, he was still exhausted, but it was different. He felt foggy headed, and though it was still difficult for him to breathe, he didn’t feel the sharp pains with each breath that he remembered from the night before.

But he did feel warm, and he couldn’t explain why. His whole body seemed itchy, under the bandages and braces that they had him done up in. Eventually he was told about all his issues. The internal bleed that Sam had stopped, the perforated lung and the broken ribs. The smashed arm. The fracture in his back. Luckily the other arm was pretty usable.

He didn’t like the lights of the medical room, it made him uncomfortable. And tossing and turning was painful and difficult, so James spent a lot of time moving in and out of consciousness.

[A lot of people approached me about doing threads with James while he’s in the hospital, and I’m down to do a bunch of short scenes with anyone who would come visit him in medical. This is just a generic start, feel free to respond to it with “James/Your Character” in the heading, just to keep everything all separated.]

Tony felt like that shrapnel was back in his chest as he watched James suffer. This version of Tony didn't raise James, but they'd been through much together in their new reality and Tony completely accepted the boy as his own, which meant Tony's heart was shattered into a million pieces at the thought of losing Jamie. He'd barely left his side, only leaving when others wanted a moment alone with the boy.

"Shhh," Tony tried to soothe. "You are okay, kiddo." He bent over and pressed a light kiss against James' forehead.

James stirred when he felt the lightest brush against his forehead. For a second, it reminded him of being a kid again, and being at home. When Tony would take care of them when they were sick, and check up on them nearly constantly. “Hey Knight.” He knew that this Tony had never gone by that moniker, but he couldn’t help it sometimes, when he was thinking about home to call him that.

“Gonna take more than a flying car, right?” He tried to joke, but even laughing was a little painful. That was how James dealt with things, humor so that he didn’t have to go to the dark place in his mind that told him he was going to die.

	"Definitely," Tony joked back although his jovial tone didn't quite light up his eyes like it should. "You are way too tough for a little car and a few monsters." James was too in and out of it all to really study Tony’s expression. His hand was comforting thought, and weakly, James squeezed back. “Eh, I fought Ultron, these monsters have nothing an them, and if I had my shield at the time nothin’ woulda happened.”

James sighed, “Yeah, I was on my way back in.” He admitted. He didn’t necessarily want to admit that maybe he hadn’t slept or ate as much as he should have. It had been easier to lose himself in defending the city than it really was to focus on his family and his feelings.

	"Where was your---" Tony cut off his question, reminding himself not to grill the kid. James needed rest. "You have to listen to the doctors and do everything they say," Tony said instead. James almost winced when he asked about the shield, he knew that Tony wanted to be mad about it, and he felt it in the pit of his stomach. “I had threw it at one monster, and then… well, I guess that the other monster saw that and like… threw something back.”

James nodded though, “I know, i know. Besides, I like sleeping in.” James teased back, and his eye lids fluttered at the thought of a nap. "Love you too, Tony."

	Torunn loved all her brothers, but she and James had a special bond as the two oldest children in their makeshift family so she took his accident particularly hard. Still, she put on a brave face even as James' condition scared the heck out of her. "You are lucky I don't kill you myself," she told the half-asleep boy. (Reply to this) (Thread)

James wanted to roll over and go back to bed, but his sisters voice cut through the fog. He didn’t want his sister to see him like that, he knew how hard it would be if the tables were turned. He would be torn between wanting to avenge her and wanting to protect her. With his left hand, he rubbed at his eyes, trying to get them to stay open. He shifted slightly to look at her, trying to keep the grimace of moving his muscles off of his face.

“Ha. You’ve tried before and failed.” He said, sticking his tongue out, his voice didn’t have the typical bark in it. He reached out to Torunn, just touching her arm lightly, as if proof that he were there.

“I’ll be out of here in no time and besting your beasty count.”

Torunn stuck her tongue out, but chuckled too. "James, you scared us. Don't do that again!" She wanted to rip monsters to shreds, but she'd been terrified something would happen to her brother while she wasn't there. Had anyone died in Goodland before? Was it possible? Would they ever be able to come back? She didn't know the answers and she didn't want to find out by losing her brother.

“I’m just getting back for the time you went and spent fifteen minutes in space and we all thought we’d lost you.” He stared at her pointedly. He knew that this Torunn hadn’t done that yet, but he could relate to the fear of losing your sibling-- As much as he teased and butted heads with them, his siblings were his best friends.

“You’re not going to get rid of me that easy.” He told her firmly, a small smirk forming on his lips. “Plus, you’re going to have to bring me food until I’m healed up. You are the only one who knows what I like to snack on. That wasn’t necessarily true, Tony probably had a list somewhere, but this made him feel better.

Natasha took a deep breath as she walked into medical. She'd been with Clint, keeping him company and making sure he didn't need anything. He probably needed to come to medical but they'd taken care of each other so often over the years that they could easily tell if something was wrong with the other. If she caught anything, she'd let someone know.

She had screwed up royally with James when he'd first arrived, but over the months she felt like things were going better. They'd been spending time together, he'd been over for dinner and it felt like they were more comfortable around each other now. All she knew was that as soon as she'd heard about what had happened to him, she had to go to medical and once she had made Clint promise not to do anything stupid, she headed down there.

Seeing him lying there wrapped up in bandages and drifting in and out of consciousness brought a lump to her throat that she hadn't expected. Taking another deep breath, she walked over and sat down on a chair beside him. Reaching out to rest her hand lightly on his, she said "Hey kid, I'd ask you how you were feeling but I think I've got a pretty good idea."

James forced his eyes open at the feeling of someone touching his hand. He tried to flash Natasha a smile, but it didn't quite make it to his eyes. God, he was in pain, but he was so ready to be out of the hospital.

"Hey, Mom." He said gently. He practically whined a little when she mentioned knowing how he felt. "Turns out I'm not great at catching cars." He chuckled. "I should have done better, just. It was quicker than me."
