Who: James Rogers and Laura Kinney
What: James needs some back up
Where: On his way back to the apartments
When: Monday evening.

As much as James talked big, he’d only ever played hero once… and even then, he’d had all of his siblings, Francis and a hulk to back him up. Sure, he’d grouped up with people now and then (mostly Torunn if he was being honest), but he wasn’t yet used to being so intensely vigilant for so long. Ultron had only been three days. This had been going on for nearly a week.

James hadn’t been sleeping as much as he should, he’d been living off quick meals and naps. He was basically dragging himself back at this point, out of endorphins to keep him moving. He thought he had been quiet, but he tripped, grabbing the attention of a mob across the street. “Fuck.” He mumbled, and as they came at him, he threw his shield, lobbing one in the head. In response, one of the other one grabbed a car and tossed it at him.

“Help!” He called, just before the metal vehicle hit him, knocking him to the ground hard and pinning him underneath it. Before he knew it, the monsters were surrounding him. "HELP!"

It had been a while since Laura had been able to let loose like this; most of the Defenders' fights had been against more intelligent enemies, proper villains that came in smaller numbers with actual plans, requiring more tactics than simply ripping through them. This was more like some of her childhood training where she was simply expected to kill. The monsters reminded her enough of Mindless Ones that it was easy not to feel bad about it, and she had more stamina than most, allowing her to map a patrol route through the area around the building that took her further than some of the others could probably safely go, constantly listening and smelling for trouble.

She had already automatically pivoted towards the cry for help before her brain caught up to her instincts and she realised how familiar the voice was. This new James had a very slightly different pitch to the one she'd known, maybe because he was younger, but she still recgonised it, and the tone in it was alarming. He wasn't exactly useless in a fight. Something that could make him sound like that had to be bad. For all that she had barely spoken to him she felt her heart skip and start beating faster, taking off into a run almost before she knew it to cross the two blocks between her and where she finally found him. She didn't even stop, barrelling right into the group that was closing in on their prey, her claws sliding into one as she created a magical fire blast that turned it from the inside out into a statue of burning coal even as she sliced another almost in half with the single claw on her foot. It was muscle memory, hammered into her since she could barely walk, not even thinking about the dark, thick blood that smeared over her or the viciousness of her attacks, aiming only for maximum damage in minimum time.

It wasn't until she was done that her mind cleared enough for her to consider how badly James might be hurt. Turning back towards him, she scowled at the car that seemed to have him trapped. He should have been with someone. He didn't heal like she did. "You'd better not be bleeding out," she snapped, more annoyance in her voice than she'd really intended, thickening her accent. "I don't want to tell everyone if you die."

Oh, James was in pain, that was no doubt about it. It hurt to breath, he was fairly certain that he had several broken ribs. And his mouth tasted metallic. And the arm that was protected by his bracer was broken and pinned under the front tire of the car.

“It fucking hurts.” James was having a hard time getting the words out, with the way it hurt when he took in his breath. “Just call someone.” He knew that she could fight, he saw the bloody scene she made, but he wasn’t sure she could get the car off of him, or get him to the medic unit. Plus, her attitude was getting to him--- he was hurt and in pain and she was the one who was pissed at him!

It was hard to estimate how long he'd been trapped. Adrenaline warped your sense of time, she knew that, and it was always possible that the weight of the car was holding a more serious wound closed. If she moved it, would it do more harm than good? She didn't know how long it would take for anyone to get there, though, and that was a concern. She wished she knew more about medicine - it was largely irrelevant to her. No reason to know how bad it might be that he was struggling to speak. Maybe his lungs were compressed, or something.

Fuck. At least if he started bleeding more she could probably stop it, temporarily at least. She couldn't keep him breathing if he didn't have room for his chest to move. Lifting a hand, a red glow surrounded the car for a moment before it rose up and was tossed aside, her attention gone from it as soon as it was out of the way and she was free to drop to her knees beside him to try to determine where he was most hurt. There wasn't any blood shooting out anywhere, at least. "Can you breathe okay?"

James couldn’t help but wince at the light, and hiss as the car shifted on top of him. There was an instant release of pressure, but the pain didn’t subside as much as he would have hoped. He was hurt, it hurt bad. He tried to move to rub his face, but his right arm wouldn’t move at all. “Fuck, fuck, fuck.” He panicked in pained pants.

“It hurts. Its like a shooting pain every time I breathe.” He pressed his eyes shut, trying to hide the fact that tears were welling up in his eyes. He tried to sit up, but even the slight tensing of muscles in preparation to do so made him bit his lip in pain.

“I think I broke my ribs. Or my back. Or everything.” He closed his eyes again, his vision swimming. “I can’t move.”

Laura swore under her breath, a combination of the worst words she knew in Romanian and Russian. She wanted to snap at him for being stupid enough to come out alone, had to bite her lower lip to hold it back. She shouldn't even care anymore. Then again, they had been getting back to friends again, before her one had left and this younger, stranger version turned up, and she guessed she couldn't just pretend like she'd never cared. It sucked.

"I don't think they have any teleporters in medical, apart from the wizards who can apparate. They'd have to move you anyway." She, on the other hand, was fairly adept with portals by now, they just usually required moving into them. She should be able to modify the spell to teleport a prone person, she just... hadn't done it before. Even being able to lift him into it would be better - she'd done that after building collapses, collateral damage from fights. "I'm going to try binding your ribcage with a magical shield and then teleport us both. It might hurt more." She hesitated, then added, "Squeeze my hand. Pain doesn't bother me." It wasnt completely true, but it was close enough.

James... James wasn't sure he was going to survive, and his left hand (mostly undamaged, short of a few scrapes and bruises) took hers just for the comfort of it. James felt a little bit like a child again, scared and uncertain, he couldn't imagine this feeling any worse than it did.

James slowly nodded. "Yeah. Alright." But he wasn't sure about it. There were black spots in his vision. "I don't know if I can stay awake." He admitted and squeezed at her hand.

That wasn't good. Laura's anger faded a little, replaced by a gnawing worry - she hadn't really thought he was hurt so badly, but none of the Defenders had ever been hurt so badly they'd passed out before, and she didn't know entirely what that meant. She had to get him to medical, first time using the portal spell this way or not. She wasn't sure whether he still had the same relationship with Dr Sam as he had when they'd been dating but at least he'd know better than her what to do here.

His grip wasn't as strong as she knew he was capable of, and she tried not to think about that as she wove magic around his body, pressing it inwards to hold him in place as she watched his face for any sign that it was too much. She didn't like the colour of his skin, at all. "Okay. That should keep everything in place. I'm going to teleport us now." Calling on the familiarity of a portal, she commanded it to move over them, and a moment later exhaled in relief at the sight of medical's chaos around them. They were there. "Dr Sam! He was under a car. I think he's really hurt."

Luckily the man was free, or free enough to drop what he was doing. "Shit, okay. I've got him." He already had some kind of syringe when he reached them, making only cursory movements to get James' clothes out of the way before injecting him in the arm. Some kind of painkiller, she hoped. Immediately he was giving orders, preparing a bed for him, instructing her to lift him up onto it before he ignored her in favour of his work. Laura backed away, pressing her back to the wall and wrapping her arms around herself as she stared at the body on the bed. He wasn't the boy she'd once loved, but she could smell his blood mixed with her own and the monsters' on her skin, and as she watched she wished desperately that they'd be able to fix him.
