Who: Lyra Banner, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner
What: Lyra wants to be a helper!
Where: Out on the streets of New York
When: Late morning, Monday.
Lyra had mostly stayed where the other kids were, giving lots of hugs and trying to help wherever she could. Daddy made it very clear that they were both going to stay inside the building where it was safe. But she had kept her eyes on what other people were saying online, and Lyra was small enough that most people didn’t realize she was paying attention to them. She heard everything, saw everything. A quick look out the window showed her the monsters that were mindlessly terrorizing anyone in their way and crumbling cars and buildings carelessly.
And then Miss Betty got hurt, and Daddy was upset and left her behind to go see her. She was worried. Daddy wasn’t as tough as her. Daddy was smart and liked to use his super big brain muscle, but it wasn’t the same as her real muscle. She had to make sure that he was okay.
Lyra waited until everyone was distracted—a bunch of the fighters had come in, and people were checking them to make sure they were okay and that they ate and rested. It was almost easy to sneak out. Once out the door, she took off running, but she was careful not to get worried or scared. She was a warrior and she had to keep calm to be strong. Mommy would be so proud that she was remembering her training as she took the stairs two at a time.
She busted out of the building and didn’t see any monsters but she heard them. She took off running towards them. She didn’t know how far she ran, maybe a couple of blocks, but when she turned the corner—there they were. They were huge, and ugly and they made strange noshing noises. She almost got scared, but she took a studying breath, counted and focused. They hadn’t noticed her yet.
She opened her eyes when she calmed down and her senses seemed just a little stronger. She could see more details, including a pulsing… shifting light that flowed through the monster. It was a target. A weakness. Lyra couldn’t tell you how she knew, but all of her senses said that she could hit him there, and it would hurt him so much.
Lyra sprang into action, jumping on a car and then leaping at the beast, kicking him squarely in the chest before pummeling it. “I HOPE YOU HURT YOU MEANIE!” She said, bouncing her tiny fists off his chest. She sprang away as another grabbed at her and managed to grab at a street sign. She pulled the sign, metal pole and all, out of the cement and swung it, colliding it with the pulsing light from the monster…
The monster flew back a few yards and didn’t move for a second before it seemed to melt away. Lyra grinned, before shouting at the second one. “THAT IS GONNA BE YOU TOO!”
