asgard ball - mal & ben

Mal & Ben
September 25th | Asgard Ball
asgard ballroom | evening
RATING: Low | Warnings: None
THREAD IN PROGRESS

Travel to another realm was high on the list of things that Ben wasn't expecting, but he'd sort of learned to go with the unexpected, especially in the time he'd known Mal and their other friends from the Isle of the Lost. Strange occurences included, Ben had no regrets about the choice he'd made to bring those kids over to Auradon or about getting to know Mal, in particular. Not only had it been the right thing to do, but he couldn't imagine his life without all of them in his life, Mal especially.

The note flitted toward him as he opened his eyes in a strange new place and Ben scanned it quickly before looking at his surroundings. It didn't seem that different from the lands he was accustomed to, at least, and he didn't feel entirely out of his element as be began to explore. His wanderings led him to the news that he was just in time for some kind of ball or feast; possibly both, and he managed to make himself presentable enough to attend without having a clue how to find a change of clothing. What he was wearing should suit just fine, he decided, until he learned a little more about what kind of money or bartering system existed here in this Goodland.

It didn't take him long upon entering the ballroom to spot a very familiar figure. There was no mistaking that his path had brought him to the very one person he most wanted to see. A grin spread across his face as he walked swiftly toward her. "Mal!" he cried, sweeping her into a hug, relieved to find he wasn't alone here.

With the exception of seeing Freddy and Nico on their long-awaited date, Mal had spent most of the night with her arms crossed and a sour look on her face. Why was she even here? She didn't want to be. For once, she wasn't partaking in the food, certainly didn't feel like dancing. To her, there was nothing to celebrate. Harry was gone, back to who knows where, who knew if he remembered his time there or not. Their time. Maybe it wouldn't have hurt so badly if she'd been able to tell him how she felt. At least he would've known and she probably would've known how he felt, too. There wouldn't be such an open wound, all this unfinished business and these feelings that she didn't know what to do with.

The girl that had lived most of her life not needing anyone and thinking she was better off alone now wanted to be anything but. There was a special bond between her and Harry being the only ones to be in Goodland for a good portion of the time and that was something she truly missed. If anyone had told her when they'd first made their truce that things would turn out the way they did, Mal would've called them crazy to their face and turned around and walked away, not giving it another thought. It was something that had just...happened, wasn't planned. Hell, wasn't even really wanted. Until it was. It desperately, hopelessly was.

Lost in her own thoughts, she was abruptly jarred out of them by the sound of a familiar voice - the last voice she'd ever expected to hear. She'd barely had time to register what was happening before she was swept up in his arms, her eyes wide, body frozen. Was this real? No, it couldn't be. Could it? Despite her initial shock, she instinctively wrapped her arms around him and returned the hug before pulling away to get a better look at him - to confirm it was actually him. Staring at him for a few moments, Mal managed to blink herself out of her stupor and stutter out, "B - B - Ben?!"

"Were you expecting someone else?" Ben half-teased, reaching up a hand to touch her cheek for a moment. He couldn't help being a little amused by her reaction, but then it hadn't quite occurred to him that Mal could have been here for much longer than he had. Ben, for his part had barely been in this place long enough to find the party they were standing in the middle of and to read the note that really didn't explain things very well at all. He had not come to the realization that this had been going on for quite some time, nor did he realize Mal had been living an entire life here for months without him.

Her reaction to him was hard to miss, though, and despite his teasing, he couldn't help feeling a little concern. The way she'd frozen up before returning his embrace and the way she was looking at him now were red flags that something was different or rather not as he expected it to be. He sensed there was a lot about this place and this situation that he didn't understand.

"Where are we, Mal?" he asked a beat later. "And why are you looking at me like you've seen a ghost?"
