Who: Belle & Draco Malfoy
What: a case of mistaken identity
Where: Outside the tower
When: soon after their return to Goodland
Warnings: doubtful
Status: in progress, closed

Belle had learned to use her phone pretty quickly. It never took her long to figure things out, she was grateful for that skill, and she had her father to thank for it. She had acquired some less out of place clothing which she felt entirely too awkward in, jeans and a blue top, and what she was beginning to think of as comfortable shoes.

Her hair was half pulled back so out wouldn't get fully in her face. She was fully intending on exploring the city. However, she was wholly unprepared for it. She'd found her way outside.

And had barely moved an hour later.

She'd had to lean on a wall for a moment the sheer height of the buildings had thrown her off. Where was the sky?! Then once she'd stopped inwardly panicking about that, she'd noticed vehicles. Then she decided looking back up was probably safest. This was unlike anything she'd ever seen in her life, and while she wanted adventure, maybe there was something as too much adventure.

She was oblivious to pretty much everyone, though, looking up, trying to take it all in.

Draco was trying to turn over a new leaf, but some things just didn't come easily for him, which was why he jumped at the chance to help Hugo with the shop after Fred posted to the network about George. Draco desperately wanted to repay the family that helped him so much as a child and he owed so much to as an adult, but how? Helping Hugo in the shop was one small way. Bringing Fred food was one small thing.

Still, he wasn't ready to see Hermione. He was secretly glad Potter and Ron weren't in the city, albeit it was selfish. He owed them on a whole other level and it made him uncomfortable, especially thinking how terrible he'd been to them over the years.

He wasn't looking where he was going when he started for the shop; he just wanted to get there. "Oh, sorry," he said when he realized he got too close to someone. "Oh, er..." His ears turned pink when he saw who he thought was Hermione. "Hullo, I didn't see you there."

His voice shook her from her daze, truly she thought she could get lost just looking at the city. There was just so much to see, and take in, that if he hadn't spoken she probably would have been standing there for hours.

Instead he was greeted with a warm smile, kind hearted from corner to corner, "Oh! Hello." Then she blinked, fully coming back to herself, one hand coming up to hakf cover her mouth. "Was I in your way? I am truly sorry, if I was."

She had no idea who he was, but she was worried she'd caused him trouble. Her other hand smoothed the hem of her shirt down, toying with it like she wasn't comfortable in it. She desperately wanted to get her hands on dresses. After a second she caught herself and stilled her had, it was bad manners to fidget, and while she willingly broke many rules, there were some even she followed.

She sounded different. Why did she sound so...proper? Granted, Hermione spoke eloquently, but there was something more urgent in her tone usually, like she didn't have enough time to say everything she needed to say. He supposed she had so many thoughts running through her mind that she didn't have enough time. Still, she was truly sorry? That she was in his way? He blinked quickly, wondering what the heck was going on in this upside down world. "No, no, it was my fault," he insisted. He stepped away from her, but forced a smile. "How are you?"

Her head tilted a little bit as she looked at him, he addressed her like he knew her. The tone felt familiar, if not a tiny bit strained. Belle could be observant, though mostly under new circumstances. If she was comfortable she was passively observant and could miss subtle changes.

Her eyes looked him over, trying to place him just in case she did know him and had simply forgotten (which was very unlikely, she rarely forgot a face). "I am overwhelmed. I'm sorry, this is rather rude of me, but do I know you?"

Draco frowned. Was it some sort of Goodland magic at play? "You're kidding, right?" Or maybe she was just going to pretend he didn't exist. He couldn't say he blamed her.

For a moment she looked almost hurt then her expression shifted to incredulous. It took her a moment to remember that kidding meant joking, she'd looked so many things up already, "I would do no such thing. I truly have no idea who you are!"

Now Draco was concerned. Was she hurt? Did the magic affect her brain? "Gran--Hermione, it is me, Draco. We went to school together for years." Granted, they weren't friends (at all), but he was a little insulted at being forgotten.

Belle stared at him, before stepping back a few steps. "I have never been to school. I do not know you. I do not know who this Hermione is, and I'm terribly sorry for the inconvenience, but I am not her."

While she'd stepped back, she hadn't taken her eyes off him, and her normally gentle gaze was a little shaper, wary.

Draco shook his head. What the hell was happening? She still didn't sound like Hermione, which was the only reason he started reasoning it wasn't her. Did she have a twin? He thought she was an only child. "Wait a second." He could tell she was getting nervous; it was a reaction he once relished in others, but now loathed. "My apologies. You look exactly like someone I know. I'm Draco Malfoy."

She paused trying to decide if he was serious about his apology, then she relaxed just a tiny bit. She let out a little sigh.

"I would say it is a pleasure, under normal circumstances it might very well be. Apologies accepted, I am Belle." She bobbed a half of a curtsy, still a little on edge

Did she just curtsy? Yeah, she definitely did. Draco recalled Hugo mentioning a Princess Belle (whoever that was). It would have been helpful if he also mentioned she doubled for Hermione Granger.

Was he supposed to bow? She was royalty, yeah? "Right," he said. He decided not to bow. Their whole exchange was awkward enough. "You are new here."

Old habits died hard, Draco. She would, thankfully, never require anything of the sort in return. She would eventually fall out of habit, too, but right now the familiar felt comforting.

"I am, yes." A slightly lopsided smile, then a little excitedly, "I have never seen a city this large. I was distracted by it, I am sorry for being rude."

"You weren't rude," Draco quickly replied. She hadn't been; he'd just been surprised. "You simply look exactly like someone I know," he admitted. "The resemblance is uncanny." He offered a small smile. "You are from a small town then, Belle?"

"That is interesting - does that happen here?" She smiled at him after a moment, "I do hope it isn't a bad resemblance." She would feel bad if it were, even though she certainly had no control over it.

"A very, very small town, Draco." She paused to look around, then smiled a little nervously, but it wasn't because of him.

Draco blushed at her question. He remembered Hermione at the Yule Ball. He'd, for once, been left speechless by her appearance. However, now? He felt ashamed for all the times he mocked her teeth. "No, not at all," he said, finally, meaning it. "Hey, are you alright?" he asked noticing she seemed a little wary.

Belle tilted her head a tiny bit, catching the blush and smiling. "That is good to hear, at least." She tucked a stand of hair back that had come loose, smiling again. "Oh, I'm a little overwhelmed. There is so much to see, and hear, I'm not used to it."

He nodded. "Yeah? I'm heading to..." He thought about how to put it. "Work," he finished finally. "Do you want to walk with me? I can show you some things."

"If they would be no trouble?" She asked, her smile brighter at the thought of seeing more of this place. She felt bad that Hugo kept taking time to show her around, and she hoped it really was no bother for Draco too. "That would be kind of you. I confess I don't even know where to start!"

Draco shrugged. "I have to walk to the shop anyway." He really didn't mind. She seemed nice enough, even if her face was freaking him out. It was actually nice talking to someone who didn't know him from home or as a child in Goodland. Less expectation. Less atonement. "It is a joke shop. My...my mate runs it. I'm just helping out today." Or for as long as Fred needed.

"A joke shop?" She furrowed her brow trying to work out the context. She knew what a joke was, but she wasn't sure how that worked as a shop.

Belle had no expectations except not getting lost. Even then, she figured she could find her way back, it might just take awhile. "You sound like a good friend to have - not many would give up their time to help in a shop." Of course, she had no idea how different things really were.

Draco's stomach twisted. He'd never been called a good friend to anyone, not even to Pansy or Blaise. Certainly not to Ernie or the other pure-bloods considered "traitors" to their kind. "I'm trying to be one here," he confessed. He'd only told Tia his whole story and he wasn't ready to share that information again, especially not to someone he just met. Still, he didn't want to lie outright. "He just lost his brother," Draco continued as he gestured down the block. "This way."

She didn't pry, or ask. She tended to let people tell her things in their own time, she was in no rush and had no idea it was new to him. "Oh, I am sorry to hear that."

She let a moment lapse, mindful she'd stepped into a sensitive topic, giving it time to settle. She followed after a second, looking around as they walked. "So much has changed from my village to now. I am glad to see it."

Draco was grateful for the distraction of playing tour guide. He pointed out some museums and some parks as they walked. "You are alone here then? No one else from your world?"

Her eyes lit up as he pointed things out to her, occasionally she'd make herself a note in her phone, she'd figured that out too. Her 'to explore further' list was, at a glance, already very long.

"No one from home, no." She hadn't really spoken to her roommates yet, that was also on her to do list. "That's okay, though, I always wanted an adventure!"

He mentally placed her in Gryffindor. Oh, the irony. Still, he couldn't help grinning at her enthusiasm. She reminded him of Colin. "Well, this place is certainly one, Belle."

Just wait until he saw her around books - she'd get moved between Houses pretty fast! She grinned, "I always read about adventures, and never really had any until recently, and this might be a bit much, but I'm sure excited to see what the future brought."

"I probably had too much adventure at home." Draco could admit that much without giving away the whole truth. "Well, this is the joke shop. Do you want to see inside?"

Belle smiled a touch, then nodded. "I would love to, thank you." She tucked her phone back into her pocket, "thank you for everything, Draco, our meeting might have been awkward but I have enjoyed the walk."
