Colin
OPEN
WHO Colin Creevey & Open• WHERE On the Streets • WHEN Tuesday Evening
“Even when you’d lost everything you thought there was to lose, somebody came along and gave you something for free.” -Jenny Valentine; Broken Soup WARNINGS None at the moment
This… was not where he was supposed to be.
Colin had found that when Colin pretend to know where he was going, people hardly stopped him any more. Of course, this could be because he and Dennis had been staying in a clump of woods and hadn’t found a safe place to wash up in a couple of days...

He was no stranger to walking around in circles, in part to make sure that no one was following him (you couldn’t be too careful these days) and in part because he had hoped to find a little extra money to buy some more food for him and Dennis. He’d turned a corner, and at first he hadn’t even realized that he wasn’t in the same town, because he was just enjoying the walk. But the moment he realized it, he panicked.

How had he been so careless? He didn’t know where he was, but the American accents were a dead giveaway that he wasn’t home. Had he touched a portkey? Had someone...cast something on him? What about Dennis. Dennis would be waiting for him back at the tent… and Colin had all the money and food in his backpack. He scanned the faces around him, and none of them seemed to be paying extra attention to him. Still, he stopped in an alley way to dig around for his wand and slide it into his pocket. He needed to be able to reach it if this was some sort of snatchers trap.

When the paper fell in front of them, Colin knew better than to ignore it. Maybe it was Harry! Maybe the DA had figured something out, and this was their way of getting him and Dennis to safety. There was a beat of optimism in his little heart, and his eyes scanned for any sign that his brother might be walking by before he read the letter.

There was nothing familiar about it though. An Entity sounded ominous. An apartment building? Colin adjusted his backpack and moved towards the big buildings. Maybe the Order couldn’t sign their name, but this was a safe house. Why else would there be something as strange as Ostiches guarding it? They were probably animagus. As he walked, he pulled a small thing of grapes from a side pocket, chomping on them.

Getting to the apartment complex, he sat on the steps. He tossed a few grapes over to the Ostriches, thanking them for their protection softly. He was going to wait here until Dennis showed up, and then they could go in together.

Draco needed a job, but he wasn't sure what to do. He hadn't exactly built up a vast set of muggle skills during his privileged, magical life. It was partly why he decided to go to school in Goodland. If he was here for as long as some others, he needed to settle in. Still, each day he walked around the city and tried to figure out his life. He hoped inspiration would hit.

None did. At least not that day. However, as he neared his building, a familiar sight caught his eyes. It couldn't be. Colin Creevey? They weren't in the same year or House at Hogwarts, but everyone knew the excitable Gryffindor with the camera. He also knew his fate. His stomach lurched.

He could ignore him, but...

"Creevey?"

Though Colin had gotten it in his head that this was still some kind of undercover Order operation, he hadn’t expected to hear his name said so openly. He certainly wasn’t expecting a damn Death Eater in muggle clothing to be staring at him.

“Freaking really.” Colin muttered to himself, standing up and pulling his wand in a shaky, unpracticed motion. It had been a long time since Colin had used his wand… he knew that it could be traced, but if Malfoy already knew where he was, then certainly the other ones couldn’t be far behind him. His heart started banging in his chest, and his eyes watered despite the fact he was trying to keep a calm face.

His eyes shot around, looking to see if there was anyone, anything he could do. For the first time since he’d gotten there, he silently thanked that his little brother wasn’t there.

“Come any closer, and I will hex you into like… next week!” Colin said, jabbing out his wand like a threat. He really wish he’d had learned how to aparate or something useful before he’d gone on the run, but he hadn’t yet been old enough.

“Just--” His voice trembled slightly, “Leave me the freak alone and and and… let me go back home.”

Colin was scared. Draco wasn't so oblivious to other people's emotions that he didn't notice the teary eyes or faltering tone. He could also smell him. He looked like he hadn't bathed in a while. Right. Muggle-born. He'd likely been on the run. Draco quickly pieced the puzzle together. He wasn't daft by any means; he'd learned to think quickly to stay alive.

His hand instinctively reached for his wand, but he thought better of it. He, instead, held his hands up. "Colin..." He purposely used the boy's first name. "I'm not going to hurt you. I promise. We're not even in England anymore. I know it sounds strange, but this is, like, a pocket dimension. That's what they call it. Goodland." He made sure not to step closer. "I live with George and Fred Weasley. They are here. They can explain if it makes you feel better."

Colin didn’t think he’d ever heard Draco call him by his first name. And the way he said it, there was a little bit where Colin thought that maybe he could believe him. He almost lowered his wand. Almost.

“You live with the Weasleys.” Colin almost scoffed at that. He couldn’t imagine a world where that was a real thing. He stepped back, instinctively as if he expected the unarmed Draco to attack him, or to trap him.

“What are you talking about?” In his confusion, Colin let his wand drop to his side, but his grip on it stayed extra tight. “Just… just tell me where Dennis is, okay? He’s only fourteen, and it’s not safe to be out there alone.”

Draco snickered at Colin's disbelief about the Weasleys. "I know, mate, it does the head in," he agreed. "But I was here as a kid apparently and they took pity on me." However, his brows knitted together as he tried to place who Dennis was. "I'm sorry," he continued, "I don't know who Dennis is...uh, I'm going to lower my arms now, alright?" He slowly lowered his arms to his sides, but kept his hands where Colin could clearly see them. "I have my wand," he admitted, "but I won't draw it, I swear on..." He cleared his throat. "I swear on my mum, alright?"

“Dennis is my brother.” Colin said, a flash of worry spreading across his face. “He’s my younger brother. He would be in fourth year right now.” He pouted a little, and shifted his weight across his feet. It made him nervous not to know where his brother was. “I’m supposed to protect him. I promised.” He wound up saying to himself softly.

“Is Harry here? Or Ginny? Neville or Ron or Hermione?” He questioned rapidly. He would feel better if one of them were there. He could trust them. At least, if Draco was to be believed the twins were around, and he knew them. He could trust them.

Draco heard a hint of desperation in Colin's quiet declaration. He could relate to wanting to protect one's family. "He's still at home," Draco reassured. "That is what the scientists here say." He held one hand up again. "I'm going to get my mobile, okay?" He slid his hand into his pocket and pulled out his cellphone. "Granger is here," he said, grateful he remembered that from when he was a kid. He hadn't spoken to her since (call him a coward). "Do you know what this is?" He asked, holding up his phone. "Do you have one?" He really had no idea if they were common in Colin's muggle world or not.

"Its not safe for him to be home alone!" Colin couldn't help but snap. What did Draco know about that though? He was safe, he wasn't being hunted down or disappeared just because of his blood status. "I have all the food. All the money. He's going to be worried and and" Colin didn't know what Dennis might do. Colin had tried to protect his brother from the realities of their situation but if he were alone... Colin could only hope that he would be careful.

He watched Draco carefully for a moment, pocketing his and hesitantly as he saw the cell phone emerge. "That's a mobile telly, my dad has one, though yours looks a lot fancier." Colin couldn't help but peer at it curiously.

Draco really should have let someone better with feelings handle this situation. Why hadn't he kept walking? Well, too late. "They say somehow we are still at home," Draco explained. "So you haven't left him." He held the phone out. "You probably have one in your room. Go on, take a look at the page I pulled up. It will show you Goodland's network, where everyone talks to each other. You can write to the twins or Granger from it if you like."

Colin couldn't even begin to comprehend being in two places at once but... well, there was a lot about magic that Colin didn't understand and that didn't make it less true. Still, it made him anxious not to be with his brother, especially with how things were.

"Is this like email?" Colin asked him curiously. "My dad has an email, but I've never had one before... how do i?" Colin started to press buttons, trying to figure out how to get a message to his friends.

"I needed people to show me how to use it too," Draco admitted. He took a few tentative steps toward Colin until he was next to him and could point some things out on the screen. "You hit that to write and that to post. You scroll here to see what everyone else is writing." He nodded encouragingly. "Go on, you've got it."

"My dad has a mobile, but we aren't supposed to touch it." Colin admitted. It had cost a lot of money, and Colin and Dennis hadn't exactly been the most responsible with the technology they received.

"Oh, okay." Colin said softly, tapping on the buttons as Draco instructed him too. He was humming with nervous energy. Nothing really made sense and it was swimming. But Draco's voice was oddly reassuring. Now that the adrenaline was slowly fading, Colin felt scared and exhausted. Not wanting Malfoy of all people to see him cry, he turned slightly away from him and pressed the heel of his hand to his eyes, taking a few breaths to calm himself down.

It was a few minutes before Colin turned back, and held out the phone. "uh...' His breath was shakey and full of emotion. "Thanks."

"Yeah, sure," Draco replied. He could tell the young man was upset and he wanted to help, but he wasn't sure what else he could say or do to make the situation any better. "Did you get your letter?" he asked. "I can show you where the room is."

"Uh, yeah." Colin said, and began to dig though his pockets for the letter he'd stuffed there. In his running, Colin had become somewhat of a hoarder, because you never knew when you might need something, or how often you would come across it.

He proudly produced the paper and showed it to Draco. Maybe he should be a little uneasy that a Death Eater would know where he lived, but he was being nice and Colin forgot to be concerned for once. "I.... I thought it was Harry or someone trying to help me... with you know."

Draco nodded. "Yeah, I know," he agreed. "So one of the twins is coming by," he said when he saw Colin's post on his phone. "I can wait with you?"

"Yeah, okay." Colin agreed. He still didn't trust Draco, but at least he was familiar. Colin took a spot back down on the steps. At least George was coming to get him, things would make sense, or at the very least, at least he'd see someone from the DA that he hadn't seen in a long time.

"Are you hungry?" Colin didn't wait for an answer before shrugging off his back pack. His own stomach was rumbling, and he began to pull random things out of his back pack. All he had left was about a half a cluster of the grapes he was eating, and a fourth of a pack of crackers. He held them both out to Draco. "I don't have anything better, sorry. But you can have some."

Draco wasn't used to thinking of people other than himself, but the last year changed him. How could it not? Colin's offer wasn't lost on him. "No, I'm good," he said softly. "We'll get you a real meal soon."

He had barely warned anyone when he just straight up apparated while in the middle of the shop. Colin was from the war, he had to be from the war. Bloody brilliant. This was going to be a giant mess. He reappered with a faint popping noise and let out a huff of annoyance when he realized he was facing the street. He spun around to find Colin and Draco.

"Draco, my boy," he cried with amusement. "I'm so proud of you." George still wasn't exactly sure how to treat the now older Malfoy, so he just settled on acting in the moment. His memories were conflicting, images overlapping. He narrowed his eyes faintly before turning his attention to Colin.

"Colin-" George threw all caution to the wind and tackled the younger boy in a hug. A mistake he learned quickly. The boy was fragrant and not in a good way. He pulled back the hug slightly as he made a face. "Bloody Hell, it is good to see you."

"Okay," Colin said softly to Draco. He was on his feet again, mostly out of habit, when he heard the familiar pop of apparition. There was still a moment where Colin was unsure what exactly would appear in front of him, but he smiled when he recognized at least the color of the hair in front of him.

Colin didn’t hesitate at all in returning the hug, so relieved to finally see someone that he knew would help him. Draco hadn’t been vicious by any rights, but the familiar sight of the older boy… the one who he had willingly done product tests for as a first year, it was relieving.

Colin frowned, just slightly, as George pulled back from him. He looked older than Colin remembered, but it had been a while since they had seen each other.

“Want a cracker?” He asked softly, holding out the crumbled sleeve of crackers towards him. But Colin was smiling, and his shoulders lost the tension that they had had in them before.

Oh thank Merlin. Draco wasn't a child anymore, but he felt nothing but relief when George showed up and took control of the situation. He stepped back from Colin, allowing the pair to reunite. He shot George a small smile. "Couldn't leave him out here," he said softly.
