Tony & Riri

WHAT: Catching up
WHERE: His lab
WHEN: Saturday afternoon
WARNINGS: Tony's mouth
STATUS: Threading

Tony told almost everyone he was fine. His motto, right? Bruce cracked the surface with Tony admitting he missed James, but it was more than that. He was hurt that May wanted to move and he hated the idea of being a "weekend" dad. Hell, if that. Still, he hadn't told anyone and mostly avoided everyone other than Pepper and his kids. However, he'd never leave Riri to adjust to life in Goodland on her own. Yes, she had memories, but she also just experienced a trauma. Tony cared about her and wanted to help. He decided the best way to do that was to help her fix her suit. She could talk or not talk. That was up to her.

Adjusting to Goodlands was more of a challenge than she had expected it to be. She hadn’t heard much from the women that she was staying with, which could be her fault, as the first three days she had practically sectioned herself off to her room trying to sleep and heal up from the mental affair that had been finding out about her father and his powers.

It had been a week, and Riri was still experiencing bouts of panic about it… she was still riding these high waves of emotions. She still couldn’t believe that her father had faked his own death-- to get away from them-- to run off and play super villain. Did he know what sort of life he left his daughters to have?

“I can’t get FRIDAY recircuited.” Riri growled frustratedly, throwing down the screw driver she was using on her head piece. She wasn’t typically the sort of kid who acted out like she was, but she was still struggling with the overwhelming feeling-- realizing her dad didn’t want her until she proved useful. And then throwing his powers at her when she denied joining his cult.

Tony took the outburst in stride. The poor kid - sorry, young woman - had been through hell in a short amount of time. He idly wondered if the entity snatched her to give her some sort of vacation from her pain back home, but that seemed almost more cruel. Now she was in a freaky alternate universe going through the loss of her father all over again. Except this time? The loss was purposeful. "Don't worry, we will," he reassured. "Want me to take a look?" It was so much easier focusing on the tech than everyone's feelings for the moment.

Riri couldn’t help but slouch a little, and pass the helmet over to Tony. It was banged up a bit, and so was the body, but she thought if she could get the circuitry up and running it would be easier to get the rest of it patched up. But instead she was just getting more annoyed with it by the moment.

She rested her head on the work bench as she let Tony work on her FRIDAY. It felt like she couldn’t even think straight. “You have kids… Morg and the Baby.” She chewed her lip, “What would it have to take for you to leave them… like willingly just… go.”

Tony tinkered with FRIDAY for a few minutes before Riri spoke. Her question made him freeze and it took a moment before he looked at her. He didn't bother correcting her about Peter or Harley or Jamie. Maybe no one thought of found family like he did. Then again, maybe others didn't need to make family like he did. "I did leave Morgan," he told her. His eyes glistened as he thought about it. "In our world...to defeat Thanos. It was the only way." He shook his head. "I don't think I could do it again," he admitted quietly. "Not now. Maybe I'm too selfish again. I don't know." He hated seeing Riri so upset. If her father ever came to Goodland...

He walked over to the bench and knelt next to her. "He was an asshole," Tony told her, his voice betraying his anger at her dad. "You deserve way more, Riri."

"That's different." Riri said slowly. He sacrificed for his children, he died for them, he didn't just... leave. And for what? Power? Money? "My sister was four, I wasn't even born yet... im named after him you know. He... his story, he's such a huge part of the reason I wanted to be a hero, to protect my neighborhood so that people wouldn't lose their dad's like I did." She pressed her palms to her eyes, wiping her eyes.

"It's stupid, I know," she said softly, mostly chastising herself. "I don't have any memories of him. I hadn't met him until... now. But how do I tell them? My sister? My mum?"

Tony tentatively reached out to touch her back. He didn't want to force affection on her; he personally hated people invading his space unless he really cared about them. Still, he adored Riri and wanted to console her however she'd let him. "It is not stupid," he insisted. "And you know what? You are still fighting the good fight because of him, bastard or not. You are fighting to keep the world safe from people like him." It was cold comfort. Tony knew that. It was complicated beyond words. "You'll find a way," he promised. "You'll know when the time is right to tell them and how. And, you know what? You will still have each other and that is the most important thing."

When Tony put his arm on her back, Riri turned to him, flinging her arms around him and pulling him into a tight hug. Gods, she missed having a physical, real life Stark in her life. Tony AI was great with words, and leading her through builds and giving the young hero all the advice that she could need, but it was nothing like get a hug sometimes.

"He attacked me when I wouldn't join him. I wouldn't become what he had become." Riri sniffled. She couldn't marry the two images of her father. The first one, the story she had been told growing up, about what a hero he was, how noble and brave. The second, the angry man who attacked his own blood because she wouldn't commit nefarious acts with him.

"It's just... It's a lot. I spent my whole life wanting him to be there, wondering what that would have been like. I always just sort of imagined he'd be like you, you know? Or well, AI you, I guess. But he wasn't and yet I still feel like I've failed somewhere."

Tony quickly hugged her back, rocking her slightly. He couldn't imagine willingly helping someone create evil. He'd been aghast to see what his nukes were actually used for, hadn't he? He'd changed his whole company after the ordeal. He just couldn't picture a father willingly walking away from his family to join pure destruction. Then again, what made a human father different from an alien one? Thanos wasn't winning father of the year. Hell, Odin probably wasn't either. And Howard? Well, Howard might have loved Tony in his own way, but he wasn't a great dad either. "Shh," Tony said. "You are alright, kid." His heart twisted when she mentioned thinking her father would be like him. Maybe he wasn't so bad at this parenthood thing, after all. He just wished he had the right words to make Riri feel better, but, truthfully, he knew there weren't any. He could just be there for her. "You didn't fail. He did. He let power consume him and power corrupts, it corrodes everything it touches."

"He didn't even... want to know me... not then and not now." Riri brushed the tears from her eyes as she pulled back from Tony. It stung. She had spent her entire life feeling like she had something to prove, to live up to, for it all to be shattered.

she looked back at her suit, and pulled at a piece of it, unhooking it so that she could examine the dent in the metal plate. She chewed her bottom lip. She felt lost, like she didn't even know who she was anymore but that was silly wasn't it? Because he hadn't had any real influence on her, it was all her mother and her sister and her step-father and the imaginary man she'd made up in her head.

"I'm... really glad to be back." She said finally.

"Total idiot," Tony replied easily as he watched her move around the parts. He knew all too well that the lab could prove a beneficial distraction. "I'm glad you are back too, kid," he said. "We missed you when you jetted off to parts unknown." His tone was light and teasing as he returned to working on FRIDAY for her. "There, I think we got it. Want to try it out?"

“All part of the superhero adventure.” Riri said finally, banging out some of the dents. “This is going to need a paint job.” She nodded to herself as she pushed it away to take the head piece from him. She put it on her head carefully.

“FRIDAY, scan the room.” She said, unable to hide the smile as the tech came whirling back to life, scanning the room and reading off the results to her. It might sound weird, but FRIDAY was a constant friend to her, someone she’d depended on, even if she was an AI. She sighed a little relief.

“Thanks, Tony.” She said, taking the head set off. “I’ve been… talking a lot. What have you been up to?”

Tony understood about the AI becoming a friend so he couldn't help grinning when RiRi appeared pleased. She deserved her tech after everything she went through. "Me? Oh, you know, the usual." He felt guilty holding back from her for a second, but decided, ultimately, she had enough to deal with without a grown ass man dumping on her. "Having little dude has been amazing. I can't wait for you to meet him."

Riri nodded a long with what Tony was saying. She didn't know how someone could be born in a dimension that didn't really exist, but she also knew better than to ask that question. It didn't matter because Baby Stark existed, and that was good enough.

"I bet he's got everyone wrapped around his badass little finger." She chuckled.

Tony laughed. "Well he certainly has me wrapped around it." Granted, all of Tony's kids had him wrapped around their fingers, but his tiny baby definitely leveled up the field with his cuteness. "We'll have dinner one night," he promised.
