Who: The Doctor and Rose Tyler
What: Feels, grief, it's gonna be a cheerful one (honestly it's them, maybe it will be)
When: Thursday
Where: Their flat
Warnings: Probably none, will update if needed

Of course Rose had been out talking to the locals. It was a part of who she was. You couldn't figure out anything without talking to the people being affected by it all. She wouldn't call it exploring, really, but in a way it sort of was. And she knew two people who would love to go exploring. Only one of them...well.

That wasn't going to be easy news to hear, was it? He'd already lost so much and she knew she wasn't really helping by being as distant as she'd been but, well... She'd kind of lost a lot, too. She was trying to trust him more, open up to him all over again. But knowing that this place could pull them all back at any time? They'd already lost the other version of him. Her. However that worked. And now, Jenny.

She lightly knocked on his door before peeking her head inside. "Hey. Got a minute? We should maybe talk." Assuming he didn't already sense her missing. Jenny was, after all, fully part him. Or he might have already found the empty room. Their flat felt oddly deserted and she wasn't fond of it.

He knew. As soon as Jenny had gone, intrinsically, the Doctor knew Jenny no longer occupied the same universe. Back to being dead, so far as he knew, he could only sit on a bad he never used and ruminate the experience of meeting her in the first place. It had been a lot at the time, given the Doctor had tried so hard to block out anything Gallifrey-related. He didn't know then what he was gifted, so to speak, with knowing now--that his people hadn't been locked away in time for good.

Lamenting the loss of his daughter only dredged up more, the family he'd lost, the home he'd essentially abandoned in favor of traversing all of time and space. Even with the memory of a Gallifrey saved, trapped in a far less traumatic instance of time, he couldn't find the energy in him to be excited about the latest shift in unexpected scenery. Fat lot of good he'd been to everyone anyway. Quietly inspecting every nook and cranny, avoiding people at all cost, never making connections if he could help it, and certainly not trying to do more for Rose than what he'd already attempted.

Oh, but how he'd missed his Bad Wolf Girl.

He sat at the edge of his bed, hands between his legs and shoulders slumped as if deep in thought. Some might mistake him for sleeping, though the Doctor didn't tend to do that (let alone get caught doing so) short of when he was post-regeneration. He heard the door open, but failed to move until it registered that Rose was talking to him. Rubbing his tired features, a smile was immediately put on display as he turned to regard her as though he hadn't the foggiest idea as to why she was paying him a visit.

"Oh? What's gone on now, pirate ship? Kraken? The Lost polar bear? I've got more guesses up my sleeve if you like," and he knew instinctively what she wanted to discuss, yet avoided it anyway.

A small smile crossed her face. Despite everything, he still always felt like he had to be the cheerful one when it came to her. Never mind that she'd shown him time and again that he didn't. She wondered if that was part of the problem. Part of the reason she struggled with trusting him now.

But no. No, because she knew he did that for her. Because he was attempting to protect her. It might have been frustrating at times, but it was also incredibly sweet. "Actually there is a pirate ship out there, but I think it's relatively harmless in the grand scheme of islands of villainous misfits. No Kraken yet, though."

And Rose knew if there ever was a Kraken, she'd grab his hand and run right for it. They really needed to work on their self-preservation techniques.

She stepped the rest of the way inside without being asked. Frankly, if he wanted her to leave, he'd say so. "You already know, don't you?" Time Lord senses were weird. Most of the time, she didn't envy him that.

With everything under the Doctor's belt, he had to remain a shining force of optimism in the universe. No matter how difficult things became, risking the belief others had in him by a slip in a smile proved out of the question. It didn't matter how much he suffered so long as the universe itself remained intact.

It remained especially true when it came to people he--well, people like Rose Tyler.

"Love a good pirate ship," he voiced with some semblance of cheer. "Ought to go check it out, see if we can't get forced to walk a plank. Never gotten to walk a plank before."

At her last question, his expression substantially softened. He looked down at the floor, hands twisting together between his legs, and he gave a solemn nod. Perhaps he didn't need to continue to hide so much from her, but hadn't he already asked too much of her just by spending what little time they did together? Difficult to make up his mind on the matter, the Doctor settled on uncomfortably clearing his throat of any potential sign of anxiety and nodded again.

"Yes, ah. Of course. Are you alright?" Shifting his concern to her helped, and it was punctuated by a matching look sent her way. Wordlessly, he slid over to offer Rose a place to sit next to him. He'd deny her nothing.

It wouldn't have been nearly as frustrating if she hadn't told him over and over again that he didn't need to be that person around her. That much hadn't and probably never would change. Despite everything, including her ever increasingly complicated emotions regarding him, she knew she'd always be there if he needed her. From that first trip together she had told him he wasn't alone anymore and didn't need to be.

Still, she made her way more fully into the room, taking the place on the bed beside him. One day he'd figure it out.

"Me? Course I am. She probably didn't want to be cooped up in this old place anyway." No Time Lord, or she supposed Time Lady adjacent, would. Which is why he probably seemed so miserable all the time. "She might have liked this world, though. She does love seeing new things." And trying new foods. And meeting new people. In so many ways, Jenny was so like her father.

Reaching out, she took one of his hands in hers. She'd known him long enough to know the subtle signs of stress. Whether he accepted that or not. Besides, she had once promised him a hand to hold and she never went back on promises. Least of all to him. When she had any control over it anyway. "And just what if we do get forced to walk the plank, hmm? I'm a decent enough swimmer, but you'll probably wear that bloody coat of yours and drown and then what?"

His expression became more tight somehow, the memory of holding Jenny in his arms as she took her last breath still burned into his mind. Just as he anxiously began to rub his hands together, Rose disrupted the anxiety with her brand of perfect comfort. In surprise, he looked first at the gesture, then reluctantly to her face. Did he have the hearts to say Jenny was going back to meet her death? No, he supposed not.

"She does," he replied almost emptily, any effort to forcibly perk himself up now seemed to fail. Pretending for so long hadn't gotten him anywhere. What did he have to show for it? Countless lost companions, a Time Lord Victorious, and the knowledge that his song was coming to a likely fateful end.

Perhaps the tired he felt existed deeper in his bones.

"Drown? Me?" He halfheartedly scoffed. "Nah, I'd sort it out. Got floaties in those pockets, Rose. Never leave the flat without portable floaties that inflate themselves. Might find yourself walking the plank and then drowning in your own coat. Can't have that."

If he was serious about it, the world would never know. The vast amount of things within his infinite pockets was of an unpredictable variety. Generally, he almost always found whatever he needed most when the time came. His repeated attempts at lightening the mood for her sake kept failing, which was evident in the way the Doctor squeezed Rose's hand in search of comfort only she had been able to give him. How he'd missed those tiny moments between them.

"She loved running," he offered suddenly, wearing a glum smile as he regarded Rose. "Imagine that, hm? My daughter, a runner. Who knew."
