Dating remained something of a foreign concept to Diana. She had seen movies, read a multitude of books on the subject, and overheard coworkers at the museum chatting about them. She had never been on one herself, not really, unless one counted dancing with her Steve during the war. That was as close as she had ever been with a man, Steve Trevor. She was staring at the photograph of him that Bruce had given her before even coming to Goodland, one she had kept close in every capacity: Diana and the so-called Wonder Men.

Being trapped by the past, whether the war or the eighties, she knew it was a difficult vice to break. From what she had learned about Steve Rogers, he shared a similar struggle. She liked to believe it was part of what had drawn her to him and Bucky in the first place, a group of people frozen in a period of time long since lost. They struggled in the present, but coped. She had lived through it, but in isolation. Could that even be considered living at all?

So, the loss of the person who had been the first to call her out on that tendency was a blow. She could and would handle it, but sought distractions. The last thing she had expected was it to come in the form of Steve, who had been seemingly avoiding her like the plague, to ask her out. She was incredibly fond of him, admired him greatly, so for him to consider her in that regard--well, touched didn't begin to cover it. Beyond that, Diana had never thought of anyone romantically. In some ways, she thought it would always be Steve. Bearing a demigoddess heart had its drawbacks, humans learned to let go; the gods never really could.

Still, there was enough Amazon in her that she could learn--and she wanted to. So, she donned a simple, but elegant white dress and let her hair down in waves over her shoulders. Staring at herself in the mirror, she smiled at the prospect of the night. It would be difficult not to look back on that picture when they returned home and feel guilty, but that was a worry for later.

For now, she could try to concentrate on the presence and the little bit of excitement going out with him granted her.

Fully dressed, she emerged from the room, a clutch purse to match her dress in hand. Peering about for any sign of him, she stood in the doorway of her room in a temporary state of anxiety until she saw him emerge and sighed in relief.

"Is this alright...?" She asked, gesturing to her dress.

Steve had felt bad enough about how little time he'd been spending with Diana. He had never considered himself a coward, and yet there was no other way to categorise the behaviour he'd displayed in response to his newfound...crush, as Darcy had labelled it. He should have known he could count on his thoroughly more modern friend to provide him the appropriate label.

One conversation (exceedingly awkward in parts) later, and he had felt a lot better about the situation. He'd also managed to extend the offer of a dinner date to Diana, and hopefully repaired any damage he might have caused to their friendship, at the very least. He also felt like he had a true confidant in Darcy, and that felt good. There wasn't much he wouldn't discuss with Bucky, but having a female perspective didn't hurt. She'd been right in so much of what she'd said, too. Even if he wished she hadn't been. Sometimes it took someone holding a mirror in front of your face to get your head out of your ass and face something.

She'd helped with the restaurant and clothing, anyway. Apparently a dinner date was reason enough to buy new clothes. And he was willing to admit the blue shirt worked well over the dark slacks she'd chosen. She'd vetoed the idea of a jacket, and the end result was casual yet still (he hoped) not too shabby next to whatever Diana chose to wear.

Joining her in the living room, he was glad he'd enlisted Darcy's help. She looked perfect, though he didn't think her choice of clothes would ever detract from that.

"You look beautiful," he responded with a smile, crossing the room to join her. "Hi," he added a little inanely. Well, no one had ever accused him of being particularly verbose when speaking to women.

Still a bit nervous herself, she seemed to blush a bit at his compliment. Glancing down at herself, hands bouncing in a jittery fashion at her side, Diana tried not to get too flustered. It must have taken him a great deal of pushing for him to finally come out and ask her to go on a dinner date, which was endearing. She was far more forgiving of his prolonged absences of late because of it.

So, she met his smile with one of her own and gave an appreciative nod. "Thank you."

The ensuing hello prompted her to curl her hand to her mouth to suppress a laugh. As foreign as this territory could be for her, she had to wonder just how much it was for him, too. Saving the world didn't buy someone social graces. Not at all about to fault him for it, she greeted him in return kindly. "Hello back."

Offering him her arm, she gestured to the door with her clutch. "Shall we be on our way, then? You look quite handsome, it would be a shame not to go out now," she finished, teasing him a little bit in the hopes that he might loosen up over it.

Her teasing, slight though it was, went a long way to helping with his nerves, Laughing lightly, he looped the offered arm through his elbow. "A real shame," he agreed with a chuckle, opening the door and allowing her to step through first. He thought he was probably grateful Bucky wasn't around right then. The mockery would be endless.

"Diana," he began as they started the walk away from the apartment and out of the building. "I wanted to - well, I owe you an apology. If it isn't already painfully obvious I'm not all that good at...all this." He ducked his head briefly before glancing sideways at her. "But we're friends, first and foremost, and I should have been honest with you. That's why I'm sorry."

Relieved to see him laugh, she hoped the worst of the ice had now been broken. The fact that he had been developing a crush on her had gone wholly unnoticed, as it wasn't Diana's forte. They had that in common, at least. Being such a recluse for so long made it difficult to read people. It was part of why the museum was an ideal hiding spot for her, she only had to look at the facts written in the past and understand them, not the living.

Glancing at him as he attempted to explain himself, Diana couldn't help but to smile to herself. She had been so worried that she'd done something wrong, though failed to put her finger on what it could be. Even Bucky's reassurance that nothing was amiss had only managed to placate her temporarily, as Steve had continued to be vaguely distant under the pretense of being at the gym.

So, it was nice to have the air cleared. She gave him a nudge, "You don't need to apologise, Steve, though I do accept it. If it helps, this is a bit new for me, too." There had only ever been her Steve, an incredibly sore spot for Diana (as Bruce had once painfully discovered personally).

"You were two steps away from getting the lasso," she joked. "I am very glad you are talking to me now, that's what's important. Don't stop being honest with me." Truth and justice were, after all, two out of three of her main principles.

He was undeniably relieved to hear her acceptance of his apology, even if he had never doubted he would have it. There was a lot to be said for any kind of verbal assurance. He understood perhaps more than most her reticence when it came to the here and now. It was hard not to. For all that he had been flung well and truly into the present (and future), there were still certain things, and people, that kept him holding to the past.

"I'm glad to hear it," he admitted with something of a cheeky smile. "I would hate to be the only one feeling out of my depth, here." He and Peggy had not even truly had a date. Not properly, anyway, and the sting of that would not so easily be quashed, much as he might try.

"Was I just?" He asked, humour improving ten fold at her teasing. "In that case, I consider myself very fortunate, Diana. You are quite the formidable foe, after all."

"You're never alone," she said reassuingly, glad to see him smiling again. From the moment she had met Steve, Diana believed he was one of those few good men that genuinely deserved the world. He'd left a strong impression on her, especially after they'd fought side by side against Hela and her minions. His willingness to put himself out there just to protect those who couldn't do so for themselves was what she viewed as an irreplaceable and admirable trait.

Much like him, Diana had never really gotten the chance to be with Steve. He'd been taken from her too soon, all because he'd wanted to do the right thing and save the day. As much as Diana strongly believed in love and that it could save the world, the loss of him had left a permanent scar on her heart. She missed him every day, but Bruce was right. Clinging to the past did no favors for anyone.

"Yes," she answered in a feigned exasperated fashion, then laughed. "You would have put up a good fight, I know. So, I am glad it did not come to that... Still, in the future, I hope you know that you can tell me anything, Steve. You've always made me feel as though I could do the same."

"Thank you," he offered, with complete sincerity. He may not always been great at expressing it, but he knew that he wasn't alone. His faith always had and always would be in people, and Diana was no exception to that. She'd given him no reason to feel otherwise. And despite whatever else this place might throw at them, he knew it was his friends he could, and should look to, for consistency.

"I would certainly try my best," he laughed. "For as little good that might do me." Her further words caused the briefest of pauses in his expression before he met her gaze again. "I expect you know better than most the sway the past can have over a person, much as we might hope that not to be the case. Still, you are my friend, and I promise I will always do my best to be honest with you, Diana."

"It is a very powerful place," she agreed. The promise seemed to be sufficient, given the way she nodded in understanding. Demanding full and constantly truth from someone would be unfair. She only wanted him to know that he had her full support. The fact that they were from very similar time periods had helped forge a bond between them, she knew, but beyond that--Diana thought highly of Steve Rogers. She could trust him with her life and perhaps, even one day, her secrets.

"You will, regardless of all else, always have my listening ear... and my best honesty in return as well."

Having that foundation of friendship between them would help, she felt. No matter what became of the night, she knew above all else, she wouldn't lose her friend--not like she thought she had been.

"Not to start the date out so heavily, of course," she added with a small grin sent his way. "Tell me, was I really that scary to ask out?"

"No," he chuckled in response to that little grin of hers. "I know it is said to be an overused line, but the truth is it wasn't you. It was me." He held open the door of the building that led them out of the apartment complex and onto the street. "I haven't actually been on many dates. Despite Natasha's best efforts," he added with an amused smile.

"I struggled to know how even to approach the subject," he admitted. "Though avoiding something I didn't know how to address felt worse the longer I did it. It isn't usually the way I handle things." He had always been an advocate of facing the things which scared you. Of not running. And here he'd gone and avoided the situation completely like a coward.

"I think maybe I was worried about the impact it might have on our friendship. Which is important to me, Diana." Despite his recent actions possibly not giving that impression.

She laughed at the mention of Natasha's antics. It must have been hard for him, at least until he'd gotten acclimated to the present. She was glad he had good friends in his teammates that wanted only the best for him. Diana had avoided interpersonal relationships, never finding something that would inspire her. Any time she did, it ended up in disaster. Somewhere along the way, she'd lost her spark.

"It's alright," she assured. "Though you had me terribly confused and fretting that I'd done something wrong. I am sorry you were going through that yourself."

Friendship was hard to come by, especially in the bizarre state of affairs in which they lived. She had seen him disappear from Goodland once before only to return without memories of having been there. She was grateful that this time she got to get to know him much better. Since they had grown closer as friends, it had shaken her. With Bruce around, at least she had someone to fall back on. It wasn't as easy to ask Bucky about Steve, not because Diana didn't trust him, far from it. She only knew and understand the man's loyalty and would never fault him for likely protecting him and her in the process.

"It's important to me, too," she agreed, smiling over at him. "You place too much doubt on yourself, Steve. Even if it were not to work out, you are and always will be a very dear friend to me. I promise you that."

"I'm sorry you felt that way." Even if she said it was alright now. This was why running from something that scared you was never a good idea. The first time in a long time he hadn't simply faced his fears and this is what had come of it. still, it had worked out in the end. Or at least, they were giving this a try. It was like Diana said, they were friends first and that didn't have to change.

"Maybe I do," he admitted with a rueful smile. "But it was only because of how much I respect you." She had been a good friend to him from the start, when he hadn't remembered her and she had to deal with the fact that he had come and gone before. But this place was strange on the best day, and she had shown the strength of her friendship through its worst. He couldn't soon forget that.

It wasn't a long way to the restaurant, and he was glad they were walking. It gave them more time to talk, but it also gave him time to remind himself of Bucky's advice. He was less convinced just being himself would work as well in this setting, but being himself was all he had to offer. And it was like his friend had said, they were friends already.

"It's truly alright," Diana insisted. She hadn't intended to make him feel guilty for it. Her free hand swept up to pat the arm she was grasping. "And it is in the past now. We should be looking forward to the evening now, shouldn't we?" At that, Diana smiled brightly at him, hoping that would help wipe the slate clean.

Her hand lingered there, taken slightly aback by his words of respecting her. She couldn't remember the last time someone had said something like that. Had it been her Steve? In Man's World, respect was hard to come by for a woman, something that hadn't changed despite the advances women had made since the Great War. The war that should have ended all wars, but instead had left her adrift in a sea of disappointment and self-imposed isolation.

"Thank you," she responded, smile softening. "It means a lot to me that you do, Steve."

If she hadn't been looking forwared to this evening already (and she had been), she certainly was now. Knowing him to the extent she did already was good, great even, but there was more to Steve Rogrs than he let on. Since she had become better friends with him over the past few months, it was something that she had been trying to dig deeper about without being terribly nosy.

"I was going to spend the rest of the night sulking a bit in my room, I think," she confessed, eyes drifting to the sidewalk. "I didn't expect to miss Bruce Wayne, he'd be awfully cross with me if he knew it."

"You're right," he agreed, echoing her smile with his own. It lit up her whole face when she smiled that way, and he knew he wanted to see more of it. "We should. Consider it forgotten."

Steve had always believed that respect was something a person earned, and Diana had done that in spades since he'd arrived here. It wasn't something he said lightly, and he was glad she appreciated hearing it.

"Even if he'd be cross, that doesn't make it any easier. Being separated from the people we care about is never easy. Especially in a place like this, when we don't know if we'll see them again." He'd already given her his apologies for Bruce being gone, but a thousand apologies weren't enough to help in that situation. "Maybe he'd be pleased to see you chose to have company instead of sulking," he offered with a smaller smile as they approached the small restaurant Darcy had picked.

Glad to see him in good spirits as well, Diana felt the last of the cloud hovering over them drift away. It was going to be a good evening, regardless of the outcome, and she couldn't wait to enjoy dinner with him. Just being around him again felt like a relief, as he had become something of a confidante. There were few people like Steve in the world, and she counted her blessings to have met him.

"We will," she responded firmly, smile mirroring the certainty. "If this Entity is as jubilant as it claims, then denying the chance would defeat the purpose. Though, the longer we are here..." Her brow creased a bit with mild concern. "The more the desire to return home becomes rather... conflicting?"

She had met so many good people here. Diana knew she had to go back to help lead the Justice League, to show the world that love could save it, but being here had people like Steve, Bucky, and the demigods she'd tried to take under her wing. Living in Goodland had a way of leaving one torn in two.

"He'd be shocked," Diana laughed, head shaking. "To see me out with anyone. I've been... very much a hermit, you might say, until recently--prior to coming here, I mean. This place isn't very conducive to remaining hidden for long, is it?"

Spying the restaurant, she looked from it to Steve with a delighted smile. "You found a Greek one! Lovely!"

That conflict was a difficult feeling to reconcile, and he nodded in understanding. "It is. It feels like going home is something we should always want, and yet..." He shrugged. "It's really not that simple." Here, there was so much to miss. Time with his friend, who had finally been freed from everything that had been done to him. Tony and Natasha alive. And all those new friendships forming, much like this one.

"I think I was the opposite," he laughed. "I wasn't a hermit back home, and yet here I was, for a time. Until your influence stopped me of course." He smiled to show he didn't mean it badly. "It isn't. Of course, all that drama happening so soon after I arrived helped with that." All that fighting going on, he'd hardly have been able to keep his distance from people, even if he'd truly wanted to. There were times, of course, when he wanted his solitude. Usually late at night when memories caught up with him. But Steve had always preferred the company of people. Of his friends.

"I had some help," he admitted. "Darcy found it. It looked nice." Casual and inviting, not too formal. It was what he'd thought would be best for a first dinner date. If this did become a first of several. He opened the door, gesturing for her to precede him. "Shall we go in?"

"Not that simple because... there are many reasons to want to stay," she finished tentatively, smiling over at him. The bonds she had made with both him and Bucky were incredibly important to Diana. Friendships forged in the heat of battle so often were, but that wasn't entirely the case with their trio. This one had been largely formed at the breakfast table first, which she loved.

"It's hard to picture you out and about!" Diana laughed in return, only slightly skeptical. "Did I really influence you that much? For some time, I feared I was pestering you beyond your comfort zone." In some ways, Dianad had seen a lot of herself in Steve. Naturally, the instinct to help and care for others had kicked in and prompted her to try to reach him the same way Bruce had, in his own way, done for Diana.

"Pass my thanks on to her," she insisted, smiling at his chivalry and nodded appreiatively. "We shall." Stepping inside, she looked about the restaurant with an almost childlike wonder. Despite living for so long in Man's World, the splendor of it had yet to fade for Diana, especially in places like this that seemed a little more off the beaten path.

"There are," he agreed easily. "More every day." Continuing to get to know Diana was one of those reasons, yes. But there were others. Spending time with James, if the kid would ever allow it. Time spent with Bucky. It was all important to him.

"Is it?" He had to laugh at that. "I didn't realise I had got quite that bad. I guess...this place was a lot to take in, at first. But hiding away is never a good idea. Tonight is proof of that." He offered her another small smile at the comment. Facing what he'd been so unsure about had led to a far better outcome than avoiding had done for him.

There was something incredibly endearing about the way her face lit up that way. He gave the server their name and they were led to a table by the window. "I'll do that." Darcy had earned far more than simple thanks from him, and he'd have to think on that for a while to best figure out how to repay her. Even if something told him she'd decline any effort on his part.

"So," he began as they were seated. "Why Greek food? A favourite, or something you haven't tried before?"

Happy to be seated across from him, she slid her hands under the table and folded them neatly on her lap in an almost uncharacteristically shy manner. It was a valid question, one that gave her a nostalgic smile as she glanced out the window. Being so far removed and unable to return to Themyscira, now more than ever, left Diana pining away for things that reminded her of home. It was an underlying motivation for her care for the demigods, but certainly not the only reason.

"It is the only substitute, the best substitute, I have found for food from home. It isn't completely the same, but..." She looked back at Steve and gave the tiniest shrug. "It is enough. You've had it before, I hope?"

A momentary look of worry crossed her features. "If you don't like it, I am very sorry. I would gladly make it up to you by going elsewhere if that happens, Steve." Granted she knew he'd asked her what she'd wanted, Diana still cared more about everyone else around her preferred as opposed to personal desires.
