Cassie was still in shock over the bombshells that had been dropped on her almost since she arrived in Goodland: Conner was alive, but not here. Diana was here but didn’t know her. Bart might be alive. And now? Conner was here - and there was nothing that could stop her from tracking him down. She barely took the time to jam her phone into a pocket of her jeans before she had thrown open her bedroom window and slipped out of it to fly towards the sky over the city. When she spotted Conner from behind, Cassie could barely contain her joy and practically flew into him as she reached him and wrapped him in a tight hug, tears already welling in her eyes.
“You’re alive - I can’t believe this,” she murmured against his neck. At least with Superboy, she didn’t have to worry about hugging him too tightly.
Tim had filled Conner in on a few things which included Cassie and where she was in their collective timeline which meant she was still in a place where she didn’t know that he was alive or resurrected whatever the term was he was most definitely it. In his timeline things were a lot more complicated between them but that didn’t take away from the relief and joy at seeing her again.
When she all but flew into him Conner was thankfully able to cushion the impact and he returned the hug with his own. “Alive and kicking,” he assured her. Had been for awhile but he understood for her it hadn’t been that long.
“I missed you so much.” A couple years ago, Cassie might’ve been embarrassed at the tears that had started to fall, but now? She didn’t care one bit, and tightened her hold on him. “Tim just told me you were alive a couple days ago, and now you’re here and - I didn’t think I’d ever see you again.” Right now, it didn’t matter that he was from the future, or what may or may not be happening there.
What mattered was that he was alive and here and that was more than she could have ever hoped for. While she didn’t want to let Conner go, she did let her arms loosen enough so that she could lift her face and meet his eyes, giving him a slightly shaky smile. “I’m so happy you’re here.”
Conner felt bad that Cassie was clearly of the time when he’d died and hadn’t come back to life. He knew from his own experience just how difficult that had been on everybody who cared about him and if he could take it back then he might but at the same time he’d done what he had to stop Superboy-Prime.
“It’s good to see you too,” he answered honestly because regardless of what had happened between them in his timeline he still cared for her a great deal and was just happy to have her in his life in whatever shape or form it took. He could understand why his Cassie might need to take the time and space to process the break up but it still hurt and was weird for him not to be able to talk to one of his closest friends.
He returned her smile with one of his own. “It’s good to be here.”
Cassie’s smile relaxed a bit and she shifted a little closer so that she could lightly press her lips to his, one hand moving to cup his cheek gently. After a moment, she drew back again and wiped her eyes, then met Conner’s gaze.
“I know we should probably talk, but I just want to know first if you’re okay. This place is weird enough with the timelines that I don’t know what you’re coming from, what happened in our world or anything.”
Conner froze like a deer might do in vivid headlights when Cassie kissed him albeit lightly. That was- Well, understandable from her perspective but he was in a very different place and he needed to explain that, sooner rather than later, without being a total dick about it.
“I’m alright, really,” he assured her. “Are you?”
He still cared about her and hated the thought that she was struggling in any way.
“Honestly? Nothing’s been alright for a while. Not since we lost you or Bart, or since Tim left.” Letting out a quiet sigh, Cassie’s smile faded. “I went to Themyscira for a while, and ran into some family who...made trouble. Then I fought in a couple battles with the Amazons. But things are better here, I guess. You’re here, and Tim has Bruce here.” Cassie tucked her hair behind her ears and gave him another small smile.
“Wanna grab food and talk more, or just fly around and check this place out some?”
Conner frowned as it was clear to him that Cassie was definitely struggling but hopefully she’d feel better now that she had him and Tim here for company. “Let’s fly around and check out this place some more and then maybe we can grab something to eat?” Would give them the opportunity to talk more and catch up on all their differences.
He smiled as he gave her shoulder a light playful nudge before he turned in the air and began moving away while facing her.
“C’mon.”
Her eyebrows raised slightly as she remained hovering where she was for a moment, then gave a slow grin. “Conner Kent - are you challenging me to a race?” She asked slyly as she drifted closer, then gave a slight head tilt and lifted her hands.
“Pick a direction and we’ll see if you can catch me,” she told him. She may not have been a hundred percent okay, but the fact that he was there - along with Tim - made her feel better about the entire situation. Maybe things would be more okay now.
