Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:active: rose tyler, inactive: 10th doctor

Who: Rose Tyler and the Doctor (10)
What: Awkward roomie run ins
When: Shortly after the Doctor's arrival
Where: Their flat
Warnings: Some angst, plenty of feels, an angry Rose...

Goodland was...weird. Rose wasn't overly fond of how settled people seemed to be here. On the one hand, she was sort of grateful for the break. Just having the time to breathe after over a year filled with dimension travel and...errors. That part felt good. And getting the reprieve from dealing with whatever she was about to face back 'home' certainly didn't hurt. But knowing there was no way out and that her usual team wasn't there to back her up? Not her favorite thing ever.

The one really good thing so far was that Goodland was a city. And cities, Rose knew. It wasn't London, hers or her real one, but it still felt familiar. There was a comfort in the bustle of the city. Obviously she still had work to do getting a new wardrobe together but she tossed on denims and a t-shirt and threw on her reliable jacket before heading into the living area. Having roommates was also going to be a little weird.

But then she froze.

Either she had finally snapped and was hallucinating, or this was not the roommate she had planned on.

"You've got to be kidding me..." Nope. Nope nope. Turning on her heel, she went back to 'her' room that definitely still didn't feel like hers yet.

Frozen in the doorway, one foot in the flat and the other still on the threshold, the Doctor stared at Rose as though in fright. When he'd parted from his future self, he had intended on investigating the flat and then the building for any clues. He hadn't considered that the woman he'd not-so recently in his timeline left behind would be present in the flat. Rightfully so, she seemed to want nothing to do with him either.

As soon as her absence registered, the Doctor entered fully and closed the door behind him. All the energy he had displayed upon arrival seemed to have left him, replaced by a heavy anxiety. She deserved better than this. He had tried to give her a life that he could never have with her, but desperately wanted. Nothing had gone right after saving the universe.

So, he plopped down with an uneasy sigh on the couch. Hands splayed across his stomach, converses propped up on the coffee table, the Doctor stared uneasily at the television. He sat for exactly three minutes and twenty-three seconds before jumping up to his feet, flinging off his long coat, and sprang over the couch. Down the hallway, he paused to look at the rooms with rapidly deflating courage. Which one was hers?

He knocked until he got a response. "Rose...? I--" One hand in his hair, ruffling it in frustration, he leaned back against the wall by what he would soon find was her room, and slid down the wall. An apology didn't sound like enough, and the Doctor didn't find himself apologetic in the first place. He'd gone to such dark places since leaving everyone on Earth and then Jackie, Meta, and Rose on Pete's World.

"I'll find another place to stay. If you want," he said quietly, almost to himself. Resigned to being alone, he fished out the paper that came into his possession upon arrival. Perhaps the Entity could do something about this.

Was this the Entity thing's idea of a game? Some kind of trick, maybe? One of those weird things the people who had been here longer talked about where people saw things or were haunted by things? Because she'd only been here a couple of days and that was just not fair.

She couldn't stay in her room forever and Rose logically knew that. But it was tempting, especially when she realized he was now just right outside her door. Sounding for all the world like she had just kicked his puppy. Which he didn't have. But just the same.

But she was not going to be responsible for someone having to move out. "No," she finally replied, probably just barely loud enough to be heard. Oh, well. Super Time Lord hearing. She got up from her spot on the edge of the bed and walked to the door. Leaning against the door, she sighed. "You shouldn't have to leave. I..." God, this was probably hard enough for him. Earthbound, slow path, no TARDIS. Ugh. "I don't want you to leave."

And she hated herself for it, but she found she really didn't.

She should have wanted it, but he found that he desperately wanted her to let him stay. Sitting there, back to her door, he could hear her approaching from the other side. Glancing to the side, eyes to the carpet, his mouth became a thin line of reluctance. What was the right thing to do here? She remembered everything, though there was much she hadn't experienced. What all he had endured without her, what he wished she could have been by his side for, her and Donna. The only silver lining had been to save Gallifrey.

That was a memory he shouldn't still possess, and yet...

"Shouldn't you?" He heard himself say, but didn't realize it had flown out of his mouth. "That is, I know I..." Trailing off, his head thunked against the door again as he sighed quietly to himself. He had hurt her, that was what he wanted to say.

"I'm sorry, Rose, I'm so sorry." What more could he offer? Then, he slowly got to his feet, hand bracing his weight against her door to steady himself. "I'll find other arrangements, it's quite alright."

This should have been everything she'd ever wanted. And up until a few hours before her arrival here, she had. She'd literally torn apart entire dimensions to get to him. Things she didn't like thinking about, things that still haunted her into the night. All because the universe had needed him. And, selfishly, because she had needed him. And for what? What had it gotten her except clone-sitting duty and a world that wasn't her own?

But that voice... She could see him in her head, picture perfect, as if there weren't a door dividing them. Big brown eyes, rumpled hair... God, he had great hair. She closed her eyes and exhaled slowly, bracing herself for the impact she was about to face.

And she opened the door to her room.

"You're an idiot if you think I'm letting you move out on my account."

He had been ready to leave. His hand slid down, his feet attempted to carry him away, but then she gave him an unwarranted chance. With his back to her as her voice filled his ears in a way he never thought possible again, the Doctor slowly turned to observe her with the utmost sadness in his eyes. How far he had strayed from being the man she knew, the man she said she loved.

All he wanted to do was close the distance he'd forged between them and wrap her up in a hug, but he had no right. Instead, he nervously rifled a hand through his hair and attempted to disagree with Rose. It was never a good idea, but he hadn't been terribly good at executing those of late anyway--saving the Time Lords aside.

"I am very daft," he offered meekly, hand dropping to his side. "Don't need to sleep, really, it's not necessary for me to stay, unless, of course..." That was what she wanted? He wanted that, more than anything else, because he had nothing else. Even if the TARDIS had been there, she would stand as a pink and gold beacon of hope for the Doctor that he never wanted to lose.

Her safety, however, always took precedence.

"Well..." He added, extending the consonant apprehensively as he brow furrowed at her. "Your call, I suppose, Rose Tyler."

It hadn't been that long since she'd seen him, but Rose knew she could go her entire life and still know every inch of that form. Obviously she knew the odds of him regenerating before her life ended were good, but that didn't phase her. What was time to a man who - usually - could skip around through it as he chose?

"You're damn right you are," she scolded, several days of stress and hurt bubbling to the surface. Not to mention the year of dimension travel, which she was basically still sleeping off. "You had no right to do what you did and I know you know it because you're not nearly as thick as you seem to want me to think."

She leaned in the doorway to her room, weighing her options. On the one hand, it was going to hurt like hell seeing him every day. And God only knew what a bored Time Lord would get up to. But then, maybe that made it even more important that she be there. If anyone stood a chance at not letting him destroy the apartments, maybe it was her.

"This doesn't change anything," she began. "I'm still angry with you. And... And I'm still hurt." But she was not going to cry. Not in front of him. The last year had hardened her, more than even she wanted to admit. "But you're also not leaving."

He stared at her evenly, mentally preparing himself for the verbal knives she would (and should) fling at him. Insecure, he shoved his hands into the pockets of his long coat and forced his eyes to the floor. Just as much as he knew he deserved what she had to offer, the Doctor also knew he didn't have it in him to meet her gaze any longer. It would be easier to look Davros in all of his eyes than to look upon the woman he--

Well, it didn't matter now.

"He needed you," he insisted. "More than I..." The Doctor bit off his own words, swallowing hard. It was so difficult to express himself. He wondered how much easier it might have been for his Meta-crisis, what with boasting some bits of Donna. She never had any trouble stringing words together, not like him. Not when it counted the most.

"Good," he responded abruptly, eyes squinting at the carpet. He tuned in to the turn of the planet, the ebb and flow of time itself, and tried desperately not to let his own emotions get the best of him. "You should... what?" Only then did his head snap up to look at her in utter confusion. "Not leaving?"

"Nope," she insisted, firmly. "Don't use that with me. He was perfectly capable of taking care of himself. Or Torchwood would have helped him, you know Pete wouldn't have just left him to wander on his own." At least, she was pretty sure he wouldn't have. Pete Tyler was still a bit of a mystery in some ways. "It should have been my choice to make and you took that from me."

But they both knew. Rose knew it as well as he did. She never could have made that choice.

"It was selfish, is what it was." Woo, Jackie Tyler, stop throwing your voice. It was weird, hearing her mum come out of her. Was that a sign of aging? "But a bunch of people keep talking about this place like a second chance and... Well."

Her shoulders lifted in a slight shrug. No, she wasn't ready to let her guard down. Those walls wouldn't be coming down for a fair bit, in fact. But she wouldn't have him wandering around the streets, either.

At least...not alone.

There it was, the lecture he'd been bracing himself for. The Doctor could barely steel himself for it, because he knew well that he deserved it. He hadn't been thinking clearly that day, so much riding on having enough time to say goodbye to Donna. The grief of losing his best friend and the woman he--well, it was a lot even for a Time Lord to experience all in one day. Especially after having saved the solar system proper.

Staring solemnly at her, he barely managed a nod in agreement. It had been supremely selfish, there was no excuse for it other than to punish himself.

"Thought you did make it," he said quietly, gaze averted as he recalled her kiss with the Meta-crisis. Granted it had gone the way he had planned, banking on his other to be able to say the things he could not. As much as the Doctor wanted to give Rose forever, he knew he never could.

"Right... second chance. Well, is something, isn't it?" Slow to the draw with humans, as always, his head popped up to squint at her in curiosity. "Hold on. Do you mean...?" Was she offering him an olive branch when he hardly deserved one?

Because he desperately wanted to take it.

At that, Rose admittedly had to blush. He made a good point. Obviously it had to have been hard for him to see but how could she not have reacted the way she had? She had longed for those words for so long. And even then, when at least one of them had gotten it in him to say them, they'd been whispered, only for her.

Being in love with a Time Lord was hard work.

"Lapse in judgment," she admitted. She knew it might have been expected that they'd wander off into the sunset hand in hand for their happily ever after. Maybe someday something could happen and they'd make it work. But at the moment, Rose couldn't even begin to picture it.

Sighing, she stepped forward. It actually physically hurt, being this close to him. "I'm not done being mad at you. And honestly, you have every right to be angry with me. But I have to believe there's a reason we're both here."

"Angry with you?" He repeated in disbelief, eyes snapping up to meet hers. Although she moved closer, the Doctor remained rigid in place. Even at his worst, enraged over Daleks or the next threat, he could never bring himself to be genuinely upset with her. Rose always put her heart in the right place when push came to shove. It was knowing that she had also wanted to give it to him that complicated matters.

That was why he wanted so desperately to know, in some way, they could still be together. Even if it couldn't be him.

"What--what?" He stammered in confusion, head shaking as he tried to understand why she would say such a thing. "Rose, you've done nothing wrong. Ever. Well. Busting through the dimensions could make it on one of my lists of reasons to be cross, but I couldn't -- I wouldn't ever be angry with you. Not for any lapses in judgment or anything else. Haven't got the right to be."

She, on the other hand, had the grounds to be angry with him for the rest of her life. As much as he wanted to believe that there was a reason they were both there, that it could be some kind of second chance, the purpose of leaving the Meta-Crisis with her still burned at the forefront of his mind: he couldn't live a human life with Rose. One day, just as he had that day, he would have to go on without her. Alone.
