Tony & May

May & Tony

WHO: May Parker & Tony Stark
WHAT: Getting reacquainted
WHERE: The farm!
WARNINGS: PG for language
SPOILERS: Endgame
STATUS: Threading

Tony wasn't sure what to say to May in person. He'd spent the night in his lab so he'd avoid running into her and Peter if they returned to the apartment during that time. He wasn't being malicious and he wasn't exactly jealous; he just didn't know how to approach their new-fangled family. Peter was May's and she earned the right to tell Tony to fuck off if she chose. And why shouldn't she? Tony got the boy into trouble. It was the last thing he wanted, but he hurt May and Peter in their world. He never stopped blaming himself for it and he'd never forgive himself, but he'd come to terms with it. But now May was in Goodland and he had to confront it all over again. He'd apologized over the network, but he knew it wasn't enough so he invited her to the farm, which was quickly becoming another safe place for him. It was hard to feel badly with animals around. Still, he wasn't sure what to say when he saw her face to face.

The last ... was it really less than 24 hours? The last 24 hours had been a bit of a challenge for May. It felt akin to finding out Peter was Spider-Man but magnified by at least 5. She was doing her best to bend with the wind, as she usually did with the weird things, but this was difficult. There were small pieces of normalcy that helped, though. Waking up and sending Pete off to school, familiar faces. They might have contrasted with what had changed for other people, but for May they helped to ground her. Things were different, but the entire world wasn't upside down.

Her wardrobe was definitely one thing that was different, though. This Entity might have provided clothes, but they weren't anything she looked forward to wearing. She'd put her outfit from the fundraiser back on, intending to see what her other options were when she got her invitation from Tony. Heels and a dress weren't exactly farm material, but this was Manhattan. How farm-y could the farm be?

Arriving as she'd been told, she found it could, in fact, be very farm-y. "Tony?"

"May?" He wasn't so oblivious that he didn't realize she was wearing a dress and heels to the farm. Should he have told her to dress down? Should he offer her a pair of shoes? They'd probably be too big. He, however, decided it was best not to comment. "Hi!" He added quickly, moving away from one of the goats he'd been feeding. "Let me just..." He gestured toward the soap and faucet. He washed his hands and finally turned back to her and stuck a hand out. "So what do you think?"

"You're feeding goats. You. In Manhattan." It was obvious, but shocking enough that she had to point it out. Just in case he'd missed it. It was better than blurting out that he wasn't dead—despite her attendance at his funeral—which was the other thought that had popped into her head. Seeing words was different from seeing the man himself. While he washed his hands she took the opportunity to look around. Yet another thing to take in and her mind was starting to burn out on all the new stimuli. Shaking his hand, she took the opportunity to look him over as well. He looked older, of course, but also more settled. Solid, in a way. "It's ... a lot." It was all just... so much. Not that it was bad. She just didn't know what to make of things yet.

He laughed. "Yeah, this entity seems to want to give us what we want even if it fucks up occasionally." He wasn't sure how much Peter told her, but he couldn't completely hide the bad stuff from her. "Harley mentioned wanting an alpaca and, well..." He gestured around. "Here we are." He regretted mentioning it almost immediately. "Not that I give the kids everything they want. I mean not if it is bad for them or anything."

"Fucks up how?" She was wary of asking the question, considering all of the things that had happened without some all-powerful entity, but she wanted to know at the same time.

"An alpaca." There was more than an alpaca here. And he was flustered (for him at least). That was interesting. Dropping into a crouch, she reached out to let a curious baby goat snuffle her hand. "How many kids do you have here? I'm counting four off the top of my head. Human ones."

He didn't look forward to telling her about the shitty things, but he figured he might as well do it while she pet a baby goat. "Sometimes things go a little crazy here," he admitted. "Everyone probably has their own idea about what was the worst thing so I'll tell you about the most recent, ah, incident." He distracted himself by picking up a rabbit and nuzzling it for a moment. "A bunch of villains from everyone's different timelines showed up for a few days. It was...well, it was shit to be honest." He shrugged and put the animal down. "We survived and, you know, for some of us, this is better than the alternative. And good things happen too! We were in Paris once."

He turned back to her when she asked about the kids. "Counting only the under 21s? Five that are still here. And, I'm sure you saw...Pepper is expecting." He visibly softened when discussing the kids.

May's hand stilled at the description, the baby goat bleating over her sudden lack of attention. Surviving was a low bar, even with all things considered. Yes, they could be dead, but consistent upheaval wasn't a great way to live your life either. A tiny headbutt snapped her out of her thoughts and she stood before she could get knocked over, wiping her hands against each other. "Thank you for your honesty." There was a small amount of bite in the word, fair payment for every lie he'd told her—directly or through others.

"Six, then, congratulations. Wow. One is hard enough sometimes. I guess the worries are the same no matter how many there are, though." She was missing a few of them, not that she expected to be greeted by everyone here, but surely wanting to know the people Peter had been with the last eight months wasn't out of hand.

"Thanks," he replied. He caught the slight acrimony behind the gratitude, but it was better than he expected so he focused on the present. He smiled as the goat demanded attention and leaned down to distract her from May. "Behave," he said gently as he scratched between her ears. "I feel like I should..." He sighed and stood up again. "I feel like I should apologize for being here all this time when you weren't," he confessed. "And I understand if you would rather live somewhere else with Peter, but...I never meant any disrespect toward you or Ben. Or his parents." He glanced away; he hated talking about his feelings. Perhaps he should have left it to a web conversation, cowardly or not.

"You're... apologizing? For keeping him fed and clothed and not alone?" It wasn't like he was keeping her from being here... right? "I think I'm missing something. How is taking care of him disrespectful?" Peter had shown her pictures and video of his time here and he'd seemed happy in most of them. That was what she wanted for him.

He was saying it all wrong, wasn't he? He rubbed his hands against his jeans and shrugged. "Thinking of him as mine, I mean." He couldn't help it, but it still felt wrong now that May was here. "He's just..." He swallowed hard. "He is very hard not to love."

"Tony." Reaching out, she rested her hand on his forearm. "I don't—Right after we took him in, Ben and I used to worry that our love for him would be different, or not enough because the number of people who had loved him was halved. And then Ben died and I've tried to be all of those things in his life that he's missing, and maybe half the time I do alright. You're right that he is hard to resist, but moreover he deserves love. All of it that exists, in every form it takes. I'm not going to take that from him or from you, not after everything you've done for him here. Conversations before you take him on trips to Europe would be nice, respecting my veto power, but if we're not in the way I don't see why the living situation has to change."

His eyes glistened, but he blinked hard. Crying would just be the icing on his humiliation cake. Instead, he laughed and patted the hand that was on his arm. "No big trips or purchases without your permission, got it," he responded. He inhaled a deep breath and let it out. "May," he said more seriously, "You do alright more than half the time. You are a great mom."

"I just try to be honest with him when I can, so he'll be honest with me. But," laughing a bit, she pulled her arms up near her chest and flapped her hands, "most of the time I'm paddling furiously under the water, making this up as I go. Like most parents, but without the added backup." Ben had been the third leg in their tripod, keeping them steady. "And high school? Not the easiest years." She didn't know why she was saying this out loud, and to Tony Stark of all people.

He let out a genuine laugh. "Yeah, I have to admit I'm looking forward to having a baby around to balance out all the teen hormones." The conversation went better than he hoped and he was getting a little better insight into May as a person. "You're both still standing so must be doing something right." He cleared his throat. "And, er, you've got the back up now if you want it. We're a weird family, but it works."

"Ah, but if you do it right, you're back in those hormones in a little over a decade." Much better to get that out of the way as fast as possible, even if the end of those years meant the end of cohabitation, too.

Her walls instinctively went up a bit at his offer, something she'd have to unpack later. Peter was older now, and he'd proven he could take care of himself. It wasn't like they'd disagree about something completely, fundamentally life-altering. Peter was already his own person. "I'm not sure I understand exactly what that would mean."

"Just that you have friends here," Tony replied. "And," he said, hoping to lighten the mood, "animals. Lots of animals." He gestured at the farm animals. "Want the tour?" He knew it wasn't easy for either of them, but he really meant it about being friends.

"I can always do with some friends. Animals not as much, but I'll take them, too." There was already a menagerie living in the apartment, what were some farm animals? "A tour would be nice."
