It still hurt inordinately to move much but given his condition when he’d arrived Lincoln was doing better than he’d anticipated. Honestly his health was the very least of his worries given everything that had been laid at Daisy’s feet. They’d spent the days that followed his arrival flitting from one extreme emotion to the next, which had been exhausting but necessary. Now they’d managed to come to a place close to peace, or so Lincoln hoped.

He’d apologised a lot for taking the decision to end Hive out of Daisy’s hands and, in the end, Lincoln felt she understood why he’d made his choice. It didn’t make it better but it did help to understand how each of them felt. Now, he hoped, they could move on.

As he was musing the door knocked and Daisy came in with a tray of breakfast. He shuffled himself up the pillows and propped himself as he smiled and made room for her to sit down. “If I didn’t feel like a total cripple right now I’d say I could get used to this kind of service,” Lincoln told her. “Did I ever tell you that I love your coffee?” especially when he could barely make it for himself. As for the smell of bacon coming off the plate, he was in heaven right now. “What have you got planned for the day other than making me as fat as you can before I’m fit and well?” he asked Daisy with a smile.

"A glimmer of light at the end of a breakfast-free tunnel? I'll take that," Lincoln told her with a low chuckle. He met Daisy's eyes and nodded, "I want out," he said in no uncertain terms. "I wanna see the sun and the sky again," Lincoln felt a shiver of pleasure at the thought of feeling a breeze on his face. Something he'd never thought he'd miss or value before he woke up here. Now everything mattered. Every taste and sensation were things that he'd never thought he'd feel again and because he'd gotten lucky he valued them. "We can totally do this," he told Daisy with a smile, "trust me, I'm a doctor and if I bitch about the pain, feel free to kick my ass."

Lincoln cocked his head to one side as he listened in understanding. "You were scared to tell me, weren't you?" he asked with a small shake of his head. "I would never blame you for what happened with SHIELD, Daisy. You were the one truly good thing about my life back home and I was lucky to share that time with you and I wouldn't take it back," Lincoln told her. "Well, maybe that last part," he figured denying it would be ridiculous and insulting to both of them. "What I'm saying," or trying to say, "is that you were someone I'd follow. Maybe would again, if the circumstances were right. You're the right person to do this," he said resting his hand on Daisy's. "The only person who should do it."

"You can call it that." So, they were going out after Lincoln finished his breakfast. That was fine with her. "Well, eat your food and let's go then." He laughed a little. "I'll remember that when you start complaining about my whooping your ass," she joked.

Daisy shrugged a little. "Not scared. Worried what you might think. I know you didn't have the best time being apart of SHIELD." And that's what had made her hesitant to tell him. "I'm glad to hear that. And I want you to know that I would never try to make you join. But I do want you to know that if you ever wanted to, I would love to have you be apart of my SHIELD." She gave him a small smile before standing up again. "Finish your food so we can go out."

He started eating with renewed passion, stopping only to answer, "yes Mom. Do I gotta eat the crusts too?" Lincoln asked with a mischievous smirk. The promise of getting out of his room for a while was definitely lifting his mood, which had been at a low ebb since his arrival. "Just whoop it gently, huh?" he told Daisy. "I don't want to spend a moment longer than I have to in this bed and I know what you're capable of," he grinned. "Speaking of, as soon as I'm up to it I want to get training again, if you'll spot for me?" he asked hopefully, knowing that Daisy would test him and not pull her punches.

"I didn't always agree with SHIELD's philosophy," Lincoln agreed with a nod, "but that doesn't mean you can't talk to me about it. Hell, you can tell me anything," he told Daisy with a smile. "And, for what it's worth, the time I spent at SHIELD was some of the happiest of my life," which might say more about him than SHIELD. As to rejoining, that might be a step too far right now, though if anyone could convince him it was a good move it was Daisy. "You wouldn't push me into SHIELD any more than I'd push you away." There was too much mutual respect for that. "I'll help, from the sidelines at least, if there are inhumans that need me I'll be there," Lincoln said with a small smile. "The rest we'll leave on the table, huh?"

He took a last mouthful of food and pushed his tray away with a contented sigh. "Alright, let's get this done," he said holding his hand out to Daisy for an assist. "Does this building have roof access?" he asked curiously, feeling a sudden urge to sit and look at the city they'd been drawn into. "We could sit up there for a while, right?" Lincoln asked hopefully, "or is the street a better goal?"

"Eat your food," Daisy said with a roll of her eyes. "No, I will not whoop it gently. IT wouldn't be an ass beating if I went gentle on you." Like she was going to say no to that. "I will. I need someone to work out with. You'll be perfect."

Daisy listened and she knew Lincoln was right. She should be able to talk to him about SHIELD since in a way SHIELD was apart of her. "Okay, from this point on, I will openly talk about SHIELD with you if I have anything to share with you."

She grabbed his hand and helped him out of bed. "Hm, I don't know. I guess we're about to find out," she said with a smile. "If we can't go on the roof, we'll head out to the street."

"You'll be wanting me to lick the plate clean next," he said with a chuckle, liking that Daisy was starting to revert to her normal fun self. "All this time I never realised you were into the kink," Lincoln said with a wiggle of his eyebrows. "You learn something new about people all the time. Try to leave my ass in decent enough shape to work will ya?" he told her with a grin. Training together would be good for them both. A little normality in the weirdness. "I always knew you thought I was perfect for something," he teased Daisy, "but it won't be long and I'll be wanting to train. Good to know you're in."

Lincoln gave a small nod and smiled. "You ever need someone to bounce ideas off, I'm here for you," he replied with enthusiasm. He might not be SHIELD's first sign-up but he'd happily help Daisy work through things as they went. "That goes for everything, not just SHIELD." There'd been a time when they shared everything and Lincoln knew they weren't going to be in that place again right away, but this was a start. "Thank you for trusting me," he said softly.

"Well let's go and find out," he agreed as he gave a small wince as his ribs protested him moving. "If they don't have roof access I'm having words with the deity or whatever it calls itself," Lincoln told Daisy giving a small huff. They made slow but steady progress up the stairs and eventually they were rewarded with a fire exit, which brought a broad smile to Lincoln's face. "No harsh words required," he said to Daisy as he pushed open the door and took a deep breath of the fresh air. "I missed this."
