Tony + Nat
WHO: Tony Stark & Natasha Romanoff
WHERE: Ostrich's Villa & eating establishment
WHEN: Backdated to Sunday, June 16
WARNINGS: Language, maybe
SPOILERS? Through Infinity War

Tony felt better than when he first arrived in Goodland on Saturday. Having Peter back improved his mental state tremendously although he was still concerned about everything back in his real time. Was Pepper alright? Rhodey? Happy? The rest of the Avengers? He was starting to realize they were likely copies of their authentic selves so he figured he was still technically back in his real world, but that didn't help his current consciousness that still felt connected to everyone back home. However, he had a reason to make the best of everything in Goodland now. Maybe that was why he was actually responding to people via the web board. Maybe that was why he took a risk and invited Nat to lunch and drinks when she mentioned she was craving Chinese food.

He hadn't seen her since their disagreement about Nat letting Steve and Bucky go in Germany. She hadn't been wrong, not really, but Tony really felt alone back then and feeling like he lost yet another friend really bothered him. Nonetheless, he was getting past everything with the Accords when the aliens landed in New York. He was so close to marrying Pepper and getting everything he wanted. Happiness had been within reach, but he still thought about the other Avengers he didn't see, especially Steve, Vision, and Nat.

He missed her. He hoped his invitation told her that. Still, he felt nervous as he waited outside her apartment door with the folded umbrella from his apartment (the entity was annoying, but at least it planned for these things) tucked under his arm.

So they were doing this. Tony wasn't the best at expressing himself; he preferred showing people he cared through actions. It was why Pepper, Rhodey, Steve, and Peter had suits. It was why he gave the compound to the Avengers. It was why he promoted Happy every chance he got. Howard Stark wasn't good with emotion and Maria was only a smidgen better so Tony had limited experience with displaying emotion any other way.

Naturally she was in touch with Clint. Tony saw them as a team within a team, even after Clint retired. Some people just went together. Clint and Nat went together. Steve and Bucky went together. Wanda and Vision went together. It was wrong to break up sets, wasn't it? Except...

Tony had Rhodey - a friendship that would never be duplicated. Still, he thought he and Steve shared something important too. Deep in his heart, he agreed with Nat, which was likely why he believed she cared about their friendship even before she told him so in the middle of an odd time-warped NYC.

"I know," he admitted as he held the bar's door open for her. Given it was the middle of the day, the bar was quiet, so he continued speaking. "There was a lot of gray there. You know, I actually..." He gestured toward a small table away from the few other people in the bar. "Did Steve tell you about Siberia?"

The bartender pointed in the general direction of a table and Natasha led the way, taking a seat where she could keep an eye on the door. Old habits died hard, it seemed. "No, all he told me was that he'd been there. I don't know any details. Siberia isn't exactly one of my favorite places."

Someone came over to get their orders and as badly as she wanted vodka, Nat decided to go easy since it was the middle of the day and ordered red wine. when the waiter had left, she turned back to Tony. "He told us that he'd taken Bucky to Wakanda but that was all. He might have told Sam more than me since he knows how I feel about Russia in general." She hadn't considered herself Russian in many years for all that she had a Russian name and there were some things about the place that she missed, mostly vodka.

Tony ordered a single-malt scotch on the rocks before turning back to Nat. He had no intention of getting into the gritty details of everything that transpired there, but he did want her to know some things. "I went to find Steve," he said, "To give him a heads up before the feds got him. I...I started doubting some things when Rhodey got hurt." Tony shrugged. "Whatever I believed," he added, "It wasn't worth risking you all." He paused so the waiter could place their drinks between them.

He took a sip, wincing slightly as it hit the spot. "Unfortunately, I found out something that sort of...changed everything. It is between Steve and I so I am not going to drag you into it, but..." He shot her a small smile. "I wanted you to know, I guess, I'm not a total jerk? I didn't want anyone getting hurt." He wanted to go easy on them. He said that in Germany. Things just escalated. "And, you know, back home? I'm getting married. It seemed strange not being able to send you an invitation."

She nodded. "How is Rhodey? I heard about it, I knew he was in good hands though, that you'd do whatever you could to help him." Tony was brilliant, he could build anything and he would have worked day and night with the doctors to do what was best for his friend, of that she had no doubt.

Taking a sip of her wine, she took a deep breath. "It was all so crazy. Sometimes I wonder if the whole intent of the Accords was to make us turn on each other. I have no idea but I meant what I said, I want to put that behind us because we're all going to need each other to figure this damned place out and what we're supposed to do here." Natasha looked around the bar. "As much as it looks like New York, it doesn't feel like it." it took a second for the rest of his words to register and she burst into a big grin. "Well it is about damn time you got married! Although I'm pretty sure you're already married in some countries as long as you've been together. Congratulations, I'm so happy for you." Pepper was one of her closest friends and she was one of the few people that could rein Tony in when he needed it. From all she could see, it was a match made in heaven and she was glad they were finally doing it.

Tony laughed. "Yeah, Happy was carrying around that ring since the early 2000s. I'm slow on the uptake, I guess." He sipped more scotch and focused on what was happening in the moment. If he thought of Pepper too long, he lost sight of why he needed Goodland to exist. He just had to hope his future wife popped up eventually. "And what about you?" He prodded. "I always sort of thought you and Steve..." He raised his eyebrows.

The idea of Happy carrying the ring around for so long made her laugh. Especially since she knew that Tony probably wasn't joking.

"Me? No, there's nobody. Steve is a great guy but he lost his heart to someone a long time ago. I don't know if he'll ever get past that. I keep hoping he will but he's too busy trying to take care of everybody else to take care of himself." She could have been talking about herself as well but she would never admit that.

"Peggy," Tony replied. Steve sometimes seemed to move on, but Tony knew the past had a way of holding on to its victims. He reached across the small table, wordlessly requesting to take Nat's hand. "Sounds like someone else I know."

"Yes, Peggy. I feel like I know her, I've heard and read so much about her, she must have been a remarkable woman." She was surprised when Tony took her hand and she tried to reply as casually as she could.

"Oh I'm fine. The thing with Bruce was well..it wasn't meant to be. We'll always be friends but there was just too much stuff.' The whole time she was speaking though, she knew that Tony had seen the necklace. She had taken it off when Clint married Laura but it was one of the few personal things that she had in her room at the Compound. When she had set out to meet Sam and Steve, she had put it on again, thinking that she might never seen Clint again and this would be a way of having him with her.

Tony nodded. Her relationship with Banner had been a surprise, but Tony knew all about opposites attracting. How else did Pepper put up with him? Still, he knew his good friend, Bruce, came with a lot of baggage. There was a reason Tony called him the "strongest" Avenger; it had nothing to do with the actual Hulk. Bruce was one of the strongest men he knew. "If he ever gets here you mean." He winked and released her hands.

"I'm sorry you lost so much," he said, his eyes falling briefly on her necklace. He hadn't seen Clint since their exchange in Germany; truthfully, they weren't all that close, but Clint's words in the rafters still stung. "But maybe...maybe this is a second chance. Clint might come."

"Well he did call Steve so maybe he'll show up. I'm glad he did or Wanda and Vision would have had to face those goons alone. Not that they couldn't have handled it but it never hurts to have a few extra hands." It had been crazy and from what she'd leanred since arriving, it had only gotten crazier.

"Maybe. Who knows, this place is not like anything I have ever seen before.' Natasha wished with all her heart that Clint would show up, not because she wanted them to hae a chance, but because he was her best friend, no matter what else he might have been in the past. He could always make her laugh or smile no matter how bad things were and she could use that right now. "But I'm glad that you're here. I wanted to talk to you so many times but I didn't know what to say. So I guess our Entitiy friend thought he or she or it would just take care of it for me."

Of course Captain America succeeded. He always did. Tony couldn't help the dark thought, but he reminded himself the upside was that he helped Wanda and Vision, which was the most important thing. He guessed he still had some issues with Steve, damn it. The feelings were too complicated there; he didn't want to dwell on it, especially when he might never see him again in either reality.

"I'm glad you are in this crazy place with me too," Tony confessed. "You are the closest friend I have here," he added. "Bonus point for this entity thing, I guess." He cleared his throat. "I shouldn't have accused you of working both sides, Nat. I know you...you were in an impossible spot."

She nodded. "Yeah, I was and I know you were upset and we all said things we shouldn't have. That's what happens. I just wish there had been a way to avoid things turning into a fight." That was what had bothered her the most. She thought of the Avengers as her family, the only one she'd ever really known and it hurt to see them arguing.

"But hey, we'll be fine. We've found the neighborhood bar and a Chinese restaurant. I'd say we're batting a thousand."

"It was never supposed to get to that point," he responded. Tony wanted to go easy on them; he said as much to Nat at the time. He never would have brought Peter in if he thought...

He diverted his thoughts again. Going down that path only led to more bitterness, which served no purpose given their current circumstances. Steve wasn't there. Clint wasn't there. It was like staying angry at ghosts. He had enough of that with his old man.

"Right," he said, grinning, "So long as there are bars and food, we're good."

"That's what I figure. The job thing is a little daunting, I don't think former assasin slash spy is something that will work well here," she grinned. "but there's got to be something. Someone was asking me and the first thing I thought of was being a personal trainer. I even thought about trying out for the ballet but it's been a long time since I put on my toe shoes. I'd probably fall flat on my ass."

Although the idea of taking some dance classes had crossed her mind. Maybe she'd look into that when she had some money to pay for them.

He was happy to get off the past. "Dance teacher?" He suggested. "You are good at barking orders and getting things accomplished." He meant it as a compliment. Natasha was fierce in the best way possible.

Natasha laughed. "I am good at barking orders, aren't I? But I'd have to be a little bit better at it myself before I teach anyone else. Unless it's a bunch of kids whose moms just wanted them to be able to say they took ballet lessons and didn't plan on them making a career of it."

"Isn't that technically most of them?" Tony asked. His mind wandered to the dream he was telling Pepper about when Strange and Banner appeared in the wizard's weird light orb. He guessed having that baby he dreamed about wouldn't come to fruition considering Thanos slashed their world back home. Likely for the best; what sort of father would he be anyway? "But, really, whatever you decide, you'll do well. It is who you are."

"Thank you Tony, that means a lot," she picked up her wine glass and finished it. "and you will too. Whatever you end up doing. You're good at making things work that I never even dreamed were possible."

She took his hand and got up. "Yes, I am ready for some Chinese and I haven't been drinking much lately so it might hit me harder if I don't eat," she smirked. "but maybe my Russian blood will take care of that."

Tony faked a smile. He was smart, sure, but he also screwed up a whole lot of things lately. Nonetheless, he had to keep going and, luckily, it looked like he at least had Nat again, which lifted a tremendous weight off his shoulders. He pulled his wallet out and left some money on the table. "You ready for that Chinese? They tell me drinking on an empty stomach isn't wise." He held his hand out.
