Log: Millie Lachapelle and Wedge Antilles

Millie Lachapelle + OPEN

Millie was taking the train home. She had told herself that it was because it was the last time. Four years of accumulated memories took more time to move even than physical possessions. The train ride was a chance to settle her mind - not nerves, as there was nothing about which to be nervous - while she prepared for the future. Everyone at the Institute seemed to assume she would be going on to marry 'that dashing young gentleman.' Millie had firmly quashed that notion, of course, after which three separate young ladies had expressed the hope of visiting Chrestomanci Castle during the holidays. Thankfully, Christopher hadn't been there to hear the giggling over him. How he would strut!

Anyway, Proudfoot liked the rattle of the train. She was a stately white cat of ten now, still in the prime of life for a Temple cat, and far from the undersized kitten she had been upon their first arrival in Series Twelve. They had both come a long way. Proudfoot stood and turned in Millie's lap, wrinkling the traveling dress with twenty-seven delicate claws before settling down again. Millie scratched her ears fondly. Proudfoot, at least, was sure of herself.

Millie had brought a book for the journey, but she hadn't been able to concentrate on the story. She closed it, marking the place with Henrietta's last letter (full of commentary on Elizabeth's 'handsome Italian' and Jason's latest find), and closed her eyes.

She opened them a moment later as she found herself sprawled on a cement slab with a jolt, her book open and pages down in the dirt while Proudfoot yowled protests. Millie gathered up the indignant cat in two arms, picked up the book and tucked it under her third arm, and stood. A letter floated down to her, and she reached instinctively to grab it with her free hand.

Reading it, she frowned with annoyance. "Oh, really!"

"That would be awkward," said Millie. "Although, the view would be pretty. I'm a bit bruised, but I'll be all right, thank you." She shifted Proudfoot into one left arm and let the others fade out of sight. "And we would be grateful for the help finding our way." Proudfoot questioningly at that statement, and Millie looked down at her. "Yes, both of us. It isn't his fault."

Proudfoot meowed again doubtfully, but relented in her staring.

Millie nodded and looked back up at Wedge. "She doesn't like surprises," she explained. "I suppose Jubilant isn't necessarily the same thing as benevolent," she added as they began walking. "Some people have an awful idea of what is entertaining. If it has good intentions, it ought to show it by asking first. I don't know about every world, but I'm quite certain this would be considered a misuse of magic in ours, and the Government frowns on that."

Wedge listened to her and then nodded."I can see that. We don't have magic but this would be a misuse of it, I agree. Being snatched from your home and finding yourself in a completely new place is not fun. So far everyone has turned up in a different place. I woke up in a museum, another person woke up in the park under a statue. I think a couple of people have woken up there. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it."

And there were also those like Millie who just got dropped in the street which was extremely rude in his opinion. "It's also really strange that none of the people who we see when we wake up find it the least bit weird that we just appear out of nowhere. I was lucky because I woke up next to someone who had just gotten here the week before me, she was at the museume and I appeared in the seat next to her," he laughed. "but she at least was able to explain this to me."
