WHO: Diana Prince and Thalia Grace
WHERE: On the streets of 1920s New York City
WHEN: Jan 4
WHAT: Exploring

Despite Thalia’s initial panicked thoughts, she didn’t ask Diana if she could stay with the Amazon when Luke first returned. As she’d told Hugo, going to stay elsewhere seemed too much like running away. Besides, as cool as it would’ve been to stay with Wonder Woman, and as nice as Diana had been, Thalia still had trust issues. She barely knew Diana, and while Luke might have once started a war and gotten hundreds of innocents killed, he was at least a known quantity.

That didn’t mean she was averse to spending time with Diana, however. She liked the woman well enough; in some ways, Diana acted like the big sister Thalia had never had. So when the Amazon suggested they explore this time period together, Thalia had no problem agreeing.

“Have you already looked around?” Thalia followed as Diana took another confident turn around the corner. “You seem to know where you’re going.”

Guiding Thalia through the city streets had breathed a little more life into Diana. She hadn't been recluse since arriving in Goodland (the young demigods had given her a fortunate distraction), but venturing out with others hadn't quite been a priority either. She had buried herself in work, so it was fortunate the Met had a long history behind it and still stood ready for her to attend daily.

It wasn't a museum Diana was guiding Thalia to, however, but a walk through history itself.

"I lived here," she replied with a fond smile as she looked up and around the buildings surrounding them. "In the mid-twenties, I moved after the Great War--the first world war," Diana corrected, mindful of the way the labels had changed.

"There is something I want to show you that might be interesting," she nodded towards the street ahead. "Right now, we are coming up on Fifth Avenue. What do you know of it in the present time?"

"Thanksgiving parade, Saks, Guggenheim." Thalia rattled off the things Fifth Avenue was most known for in her time. She knew it wasn't always the case. Even now, she could see that the majority of the buildings here were homes, rather than the expensive stores her mother had liked to visit.

Diana's casual reference to having lived here a hundred years ago piqued her interest, but she waited on her questions to let Diana continue.

"Well, that's true and very good..." She nodded, appreciative of Thalia's knowledge, not that she doubted her. Diana only didn't want to presume. She stopped short of what looked to be an old-fashioned hotel, beautiful in its nineteenth century architecture.

"This is the Waldorf Hotel," Diana gestured up to it. "But soon, in the thirties, it will be taken down to make way for the Empire State Building. It's truly something, isn't it? To see the past with your own eyes." Diana marveled up at the building, a nostalgic smile on her face. She didn't have immensely fond memories of New York, but had found the city to hold its own charms in this decade.

Thalia looked up. The Waldorf-Astoria she knew was on Park Avenue, and just as pretentious as the one she saw in front of her. This one, though, looked new and gleaming. Its art deco architecture was appropriately modern for its time, not deliberately made so to pander to nostalgia for bygone days.

It wasn't the building itself that Thalia was ruminating on, though. It was the building that would replace it. The Empire State Building was the conduit to Olympus. She still remembered her last trip up the elevator, when she'd finally gotten recognition from her father.

And although she didn't exactly visit the home of the gods on a regular basis (she went twice), it still affected her on a visceral level to know that the link she knew about didn't exist here.

"Pretty crazy." Her eyeline was focused farther up than the top of the hotel: it was where the top of the Empire State Building would eventually be. "I know it's the past and everything, but it blows my mind a bit that there was a time that the Empire State Building didn't exist."

"Yes, it truly is something else," Diana agreed. She shared the glance up at the empty space, smile still nostalgic. This was the Manhattan she knew well, even long after the construction had begun. The decade had been long, boisterous, and oftentimes hard simply just to exist in it. Diana had let her emotions shut her down. Steve was a blow she could never seem to dodge.

"If the circumstances were a little different, I would mark this as a more momentous occasion for you. Being that we are still trapped in this city though... It does give it more of a shadow, doesn't it?" Diana glanced back to Thalia, her smile turning almost apologetic. To be away from home for so long, away from those she loved--Diana understood the feeling.

Every day since leaving Themyscira, she longed for home. Now, she longed for the League.

"I'm a big fat party pooper, is what you're saying," Thalia said with a rueful laugh. Diana was being empathetic about it and all, but Thalia knew it wasn't the reaction Diana thought she'd get when she'd brought Thalia here.

"It's not that it isn't cool," Thalia explained. "It's just that I had this weird moment of...see, in my world, Olympus moves around depending on where the centres of influence and culture are, and right now it's above New York. And to get there, you take the elevator in the Empire State Building. It's weird, I know, but not seeing it here just...really made me realize I'm not home, even if it feels like it."
