As soon as Alice's frightened message had come across the scroll, Morgan hadn't wasted any time. She immediately left to make her way to the young girl- making sure to keep in contact with her all the while. The only things she knew of the world Alice came from were what Markus shared with her. She knew it was incredibly bleak, and that Alice along with all of the other deviant Androids hadn't been treated as they should.

It angered Morgan that Alice lived in fear of being recycled or looked down upon because of the life she had been subjected to in Detroit. So, she was determined to make her feel wanted and accepted here. Even if Markus hadn't been an essential part of her life, Morgan would have wanted to help. She felt protective over her ever since that trip to the zoo and had meant it when she told Alice that she was her family now.

Looking over from where she was writing at her desk, she smiled as she watched Alice draw for a few moments. "Are you feeling better?"

Alice was still adjusting to the world that she was living in. Here, only a few people knew that Alice was an Android (well, they probably knew now, because she had freaked out), and all the children and teachers and people had treated her gently. She liked it, but there was also a fear. A fear that people would turn on her when they found out, a fear that her teachers and her peers would treat her differently when they found out that she wasn’t exactly human.

When she woke up to people complaining about how their technology wasn’t working, she had frozen in fear. Would she turn off? What was making the phones and things shut down? Was there a virus? She was almost afraid to touch any of the broken devices in case it spread. Would people toss her aside if she too stopped functioning? She knew back home that her dad would. She was just another bit of technology for him, to fill the hole of being alone.

She had felt better when she had gotten to Morgan’s apartment though, Morgan’s family had been very nice to her over the holidays, and she liked them a lot. Once Morgan promised a few times that she wouldn’t be recycled, even if she turned off, she felt a little better about it. And after a little while, when she didn’t turn off, she allowed herself to relax. If it were going to happen, it would have by now, right?

She smiled up at Morgan and showed her the drawing of the zoo that she was making for Morgan. “I am, thank you.” She said, before she held up the picture that she was working on. “I’m making this for you, do you like it?”

"I'm glad." Alice seemed to be comfortable here, and she was relieved that it didn't seem like she was worried about being turned off anymore. "Do you need anything? I can make you something to eat or drink if you want."

Morgan smiled as Alice presented her drawing. It reminded her of the day she took her to the zoo. She remembered the joy on Alice's face as she got to see all the animals for the first time, and her smile widened. "I like it very much. I can't wait to hang it on my wall with the other one." Her voice was genuine, and far from patronizing. She wanted the girl to know how much she really did love her art. "Is it suppose to be from when we went to the zoo?"

Slipping out from behind her desk, she moved to sit on the floor with Alice. "I love that you included the elephant since elephants are my favorite." Tilting her head, she smiled again. "Which animal is your favorite?"

“Is it really hard to make the holograms of things?” Alice asked curiously, when Morgan offered to make her something to eat or drink. She didn’t need the food or drink to keep her alive, but what she tasted was enough to realize the pleasure of participating in it.

With Morgan’s wide smile, Alice giggled happily. She was very pleased that Morgan liked her drawing. “I’m glad you like it. I’m going to be a very good artist.” Alice said with a large grin. It was different, to think of the future, because she would never actually get older than nine on a physical level, she would always be a little girl. “Yes!” she said excitedly.

“The elephants are huuuuge, but I think I like the monkey’s the most. Remember, we saw them playing with the toys and climbing on all of the ropes. They looked like they were having a lot of fun.”

Alice's curiosity reminded Morgan of how she was herself when she was little, and she happily answered her question. "I started making them a long time ago. It was hard at first, but I practiced a lot, and now it's easy. I couldn't always make the ones that taste, that took a lot of work, but it was worth it in the end."

Morgan felt her heart melt a little at Alice's giggle. "You're going to be an amazing artist if you keep drawing, but you want to know a secret? I already think you're a very good artist." She couldn't help but smile at the girls' excitement.

"They are huge! But they are super smart, and I think that's why I like them so much. If I was an animal, I think I would be an elephant. I liked the monkeys too, though! They really did look like they were having so much fun." She was so glad Alice had fun at the zoo, and she couldn't wait to take her to other places.

Alice considered Morgan’s answer for a moment before nodding at her. That made sense, the more you do something the easier it would become. “No thank you then,” She said slowly, “I don’t want you to have to do a whole lot of extra work to make me any food or anything. I don’t need it you know.” She told her softly.

‘I’m not as good as Markus, he makes very good art. I like his paintings they have lots of pretty colors.” She told her, “I want to be as good as Markus one day.” she thought for a moment, about Todd--her father and owner-- and how angry he would be when she drew all over things, but she was quick to push those thoughts out of her head.

“They’re smart?” Alice tilted her head a little bit, “They didn’t seem really smart… they just sort of stood there and ate the big grass.” She shrugged, “Dogs are smart cause they can learn tricks and they protect people. Monkey’s are smart cause they can play with toys and the sign said some of them can even learn sign language.”

“Have you heard of the aquarium? I read about one in a book, it’s like a zoo for fishies and stuff, and Markus said he would take me there when we go back to the real time.”

Morgan reached out to run her hand through Alice's hair affectionately. "I know you don't need it, but I also know that there are so many things you haven't been able to try. So, if you ever want one, I'll make it for you. It's not extra work if I want to do it."

"He does make very good art," Morgan said with a smile- thinking about the comic book he had illustrated for her. "But so do you. I bet one day you'll be even better at it than he is."

She couldn't help but laugh a little at Alice's question. "You're right, they don't seem very smart, but they are. The ones we saw weren't really doing anything that impressive. But, elephants can recognize different languages; they are extremely empathetic; they have excellent memories and can use tools or toys as the monkeys do."

"I love the aquarium! I haven't been to the one in Goodland since I came here, but I bet it as just as fun as the zoo. I also bet that you and Markus will have the best time ever."

“We were reading a book in class called Cloudy with a chance of meatballs and all the kids got to say what their favorite foods are and most of them said pizza and ice cream and lollipops, so I think I would like to try those soon.” She said with a large grin. The kids on the childrens floor all seemed to very much like when they had things like pizza and cakes, and Alice had gotten in the habit of taking small pieces of the food and hiding them away as to look like a normal little girl. She supposed she would not have to do that anymore. “Oh, and chocolate cupcakes too. What is your favorite food to eat?”

Alice laughed and shook her head wildly, “I wont be better than Markus, he’s the best!”

“Oh.” Alice said simply, as she looked at the Elephant in her drawing. Maybe she would get a book on Elephants so that she could learn more and that would definitely impress Morgan. “How do you know they’re empathetic? I mean, they can’t speak or nothing, so how would they convey that even? Cause like empathetic is like… you say sorry and stuff when you upset people right?”

“I’ve heard that the aquarium is very good for calm and stuff. Maybe I will taking my drawing book and draw some of the fish tanks!”

"That sounds like a great book!" Morgan's smile widened as she took mental notes of all the things Alice wanted to try. She would make each and every one of them for her. Meeting Markus and Alice made her realize how many little things she took for granted- like food or even being free to express her emotions. It also made her not want to keep her feelings so close to her chest anymore. "Cupcakes are my favorite dessert, and pizza is very good, but my favorite is nachos."

"You never know," she mused- looking down at the zoo drawing again. "You may be, and even if you aren't? That won't matter, because you will be the best in your own way. That's the important thing."

"You're right. Being empathetic means something like that, but it also means being able to understand and share the feelings of someone else. They feel all of their feelings really big, which makes sense because they are big themselves. They show their empathy through their actions." She wasn't sure if she was explaining all that well, but Morgan was trying.

"You should take your drawing book, and draw me a picture so you can show me and tell me all about it."

“It was about an inventor who wanted to help fix the weather problems that they’d had in his town but things got all wacky and messed up, but it was okay though because he saved the day and then they didn’t have a food storage anymore!” She smiled at Morgan. Alice loved books. Any activity really that was a quiet escape that wouldn’t remind Todd that she was there or bother him in any possible way. “Oh, I don’t know what Nachos are I think.”

“I think you’re the best in everywhere.” Alice said happily, as she looked back at the drawing before handing it to Morgan. “I will try to make you and even prettier Elephant so that you can have a really happy one.” She said with a determined nod of her head.

“I would like to do that at the aquarium.” She nodded with a grin.
