Difficult conversations do not just involve feelings, they are at their very core about feelings.
Tony stuck to as close to his word as he could when it came to planning a "small" party. It wasn't easy for him, but he made sure his party included only family members, plus ones, and close friends. However, even with his careful planning, Iron Fam's apartment was only so big, which meant Tony felt claustrophobic at times. Oh, he loved spending another holiday with his loved ones, but so many people in a diminutive space led to feeling overwhelmed. In the old days? Well, he could drink to mask those feelings. Now? He couldn't do that in front of his kids. He wouldn't do that. Tony, instead, found getting air helped in such situations. Sometimes he'd even take a quick flight.

He excused himself for a few minutes that night and headed downstairs. He sucked in the cold air once he was outside and exhaled a deep breath. It felt good.

Getting some air, that was exactly what Bucky was doing too, and for the same reasons. The quiet out there was nice compared to the chatter of so many conversations happening in the same room, music, laughing -- a party. But a party where he wasn’t comfortable, where he had been keeping a watchful eye the whole time because despite Sam’s reassurances, he doubted the host would be thrilled by his presence. So yes, a brief escape from that was welcome.

He looked over sharply at the sound of the door opening, an immediate twist in his stomach when he saw who emerged. Taking a slight step back, he pulled his hands free from his jacket pockets, not sure what was coming but wanting to be ready. At least they were out there alone, not in the middle of the celebration upstairs.

Tony wasn't particularly comfortable around Bucky not only for the elephant in the room, but because he had no idea what time period he was from. Tony was far enough away from the "incident" to at least see things logically. He no longer blamed Bucky for killing his parents; he understood he was brainwashed. Understanding didn't make looking at him easier, but it did deflate Tony's anger. Bucky was a victim much like Howard and Maria were victims. In the end, Steve's secret and subsequent abandonment bothered Tony more than Bucky's act. However, he tried to kill the man - an innocent one, more or less. He had been in a rage so it was good Cap stopped him, but...

There was a lot of history between Bucky and Tony to say the least. It was ironic, given he barely knew the man. However, they were both in a new place starting over and he was a guest in his home.

"Barnes," he said with a curt nod. "Thank you for coming."

That was… not what he’d expected. Not that Bucky had expected to be thrown right into another round, maybe get his new arm blasted off, but a thank you for coming? It made him feel off kilter, that he had even less chance of knowing what might come next.

“Stark.” The name felt weighty, a little wrong to say, but what else was he supposed to call him? They were definitely not on any kind of first name basis. “Sam invited me,” he added, feeling the need to explain his presence. “I can go, if -- you’d rather me leave.”

"He told me," Tony assured him. "It's fine. Any friend of Sam's..." He shrugged. "I think one of my kids is awed by that arm. Well, the old one anyway." He cocked his head, trying to gauge exactly when Bucky was from. He guessed post their encounter based on the arm. "Peter," he added, mostly making conversation at that point. "I think you've met him when you are from based on..." He nodded toward the arm and cleared his throat. Yes, awkward. Very awkward. "You know, random spiderling chewing your ear off during a fight?" Despite himself, he grinned thinking about Peter during that battle. The damn kid never shut up. It was annoying and totally endearing all at once.

At least Sam had warned Tony, though Bucky didn’t think Sam was the type of guy to spring something like that as a surprise. Bucky’s arm shifted slightly at the mention of it, his gaze dropping down to the hand, the only part that was visibly, before looking back over to Tony. He remembered the kid, largely in part to how much he’d been a menace at the time, but also because the kid had literally stopped his punch and called his arm cool. In the middle of a goddamn fight.

“Yeah, he mentioned it at the time,” Bucky said, still on guard dipping a cautious toe into the conversation. “He’d probably like this one better. Sam did some great work.” The corner of his mouth twitched. “He gave me cookies for Christmas. Peter, not Sam.”

Talking about his kids visibly softened Tony. "Did he," Tony replied, although he wasn't surprised. Peter was that sort of person. "He's a good kid, that one. I bet they were good too." He crossed his arms, still keeping a decent distance between him and Bucky. "So you and Sam are getting close, huh?" Tony wasn't used to Sam bringing people around so it was obvious Bucky made an impression on him, which meant he'd be around Tony more, which mean...well, Tony had to make it work.

“They were good.” Even if they hadn’t been, Bucky had been touched by the gesture. That he’d even been thought of by someone he didn’t really know, and the only real interaction he’d ever had with the kid was fighting against him. And Peter had given him cookies -- intentionally, his name had been on it and everything.

“Sam… yeah. Spent time together getting the arm thing figured out.” Bucky absently flexed his wrist, because he was still getting used to having his arm back and the differences from the old one. “Not a lot of familiar faces,” he added after a moment. “It’s good to stay close to the ones who are.”

"Sorry about Steve," Tony replied. "Truly. He was in my wedding, you know." Tony wondered if this was the best sort of way forward with Bucky - just ignore the elephant. "People can come back though." He unwrapped his arms, this time letting them hang loosely by his sides in a deliberate move to appear more, well, open.

Bucky hadn’t known that, actually. Tony’s wedding hadn’t come up at all during the time he’d had Steve there. The mention of his best friend being gone made his insides twist, jaw clench, but he wasn’t about to say anything vulnerable sounding in front of Tony fucking Stark. It was hard enough to be there, this strange, foreign place, without the person he’d known the longest, who’d believed in him enough to track him down after he’d done so much worth abandoning him over. Who’d fought for him against so many people, including Tony.

“Hope he does.” He noticed the change in Tony’s body language but Bucky’s guard wasn’t about to come down due to some false sense of security. But he’d known Bucky was coming, thanked him for coming. It didn’t feel right. But Bucky was tired and not wanting to dance around anymore. If something was going to happen, he’d rather face it head on.

“I don’t want to fight.”

Tony's eyebrows shot up at the topic change. He guessed ignoring the elephant wasn't working. Damn. He held his hands up. "Don't tend to talk about my kids with people I'm about to fight," he responded. "But, seriously," he continued, "I don't either. I meant what I said about this place being my second chance. My only chance really."

His shoulders relaxed the slightest bit at Tony’s response, not a ton but enough to be perceived. Bucky blinked once at the second part of what Tony said, trying to think back to when he’d said that but coming up blank. Unless it was something that had been said over the network, which was possible because he talked to a lot of people without really knowing who they were. It could be easier that way. And apparently had been.

“I… wanted to put that out there.” Better to say it than not and have things go sideways. Then, in an attempt to lighten the situation he’d dragged down: “Sam just made me this arm, don’t want to fuck it up.”

Tony laughed a little. "Sam would kick my ass if I messed up that arm." Not that Tony could blame him; he was protective of his creations too. His expression grew more serious then. "Listen, I know...what happened...it wasn't your choice. I can't say it is easy, but..." He sighed. "We are both here and I have my family. You are going to be around and...it is what it is, hm? Just gotta move forward."

Bucky knew he hadn’t been in control of himself when he’d done those things. Decades and decades of being a deadly puppet. But just like he’d said when Steve pointed that out, he’d still done it. He’d still killed so many people with no thought or remorse, including Tony’s parents. And he remembered them all. But he wasn’t about to say it wasn’t easy for him either, because he figured Tony didn’t want to hear that.

“I’m trying to move forward,” he said carefully, not wanting to be too open considering the circumstances. About how his head was still fucked, he couldn’t trust any of it. No reason to give anyone more reasons to distrust him, there were enough already. “With what I still have.”

Tony caught the "still have" part, but didn't want to press. He knew he was luckier than many in Goodland. Even with those missing from his life, he had a whole bunch of people to love. "Hold on to that," Tony advised. "It's not so bad here. Really."

It felt like Bucky was already pressing his luck, considering how well their conversation had managed to go. No blows exchanged, no yelling, no swearing. It had been… borderline friendly, based on the circumstances. “Could definitely be worse.”

"And has been," Tony pointed out. Both at home and in Goodland. Tony just hoped he wasn't tempting fate by mentioning it. He pointed over his shoulder. "Um, I should probably get back. You coming up?"

“Yeah, I’ll go up in a few.” It had gone well enough, but not to where Bucky thought they’d be wandering back upstairs and into the party together. He could easily wait a couple minutes before getting back up there. It would probably be good for him to stay out there in the quiet a bit. “You go on. I -- thanks.”
