Quietly, Nico listened as Freddy spoke, giving the other boy his full attention (though he was careful not to stare because that would have just been weird). He wasn't sure what to make of a wizard giving someone his powers, but he supposed there were weirder things out there. And it sounded kind of... cool, really. Maybe not being an adult part, but the rest of it. But what if his brother couldn't speak? Did the whole Shazam thing only work if he could verbalize? Would it work if it were a shouted whisper? And what kind of fight?

Instead of asking those questions, he nodded, responding with, "yeah," as he turned his attention to the snow cone containers.

Reaching for one of the containers, he paused, looking back at Freddy. "If your brother's anything like this guy I know, he'll be okay. And..." He paused, thinking of his sisters, of Bianca going off on some stupid quest, of Hazel on her own quest and not knowing if she was okay or not but knowing she was capable. He thought of the fight he'd had with Bianca, of his anger toward Percy that could have consumed him. "You always fight with the people you care about. They're the ones who get under your skin, but you get under theirs, too. It's backwards, but..." He shrugged. "It's family."

Family. Freddy once asked Jughead if he thought their little under 18 floor was a family and then told Nat he thought several of them made their own family here. Still, he missed his family from his reality too. "If that is true," Freddy, smirking, replied, "Well, Billy must love me a lot!" He pushed the container closer to Nico when the teen reached for it. "Is the guy your brother?" He asked.

Nico took the container Freddy moved closer, pulling it up to look inside. "I don't have a brother," he said, curious how the box kept the snow cone cold, focusing on it briefly as he tried to figure out how best to explain Percy. Technically, they were cousins, and that, well, that was a thing that was more disturbing than just about any other thing when it came to Percy. But he also thought they might have been friends of a sort, if you used the terms friends loosely. He didn't hate him like he had when he was ten, but it was still so stupidly complicated. Why had he even brought him up? Why had he tried to reassure Freddy about his brother? Why did he let himself open that can of worms?

"He's more..." Gods why was it so complicated? "He and a couple of other people found me when I was ten at a school and saved me from a manticore." He could still remember the Mythomagic stats for manticores. "He's another demigod. Annoyingly big deal but a good guy overall. Always tries to do the right thing. Cares about his friends. He even cares about his enemies," he said, thinking about how Percy had tried to save him even when he'd stubbornly refused help despite needing it.

"So if Billy's anything like him, he'll be okay. And I'm sure he cares about," he finished, thinking that if Billy were anything like himself, if he fought with people he cared about, fought because he cared, well, he probably really did care about Freddy. "Otherwise, he'd have just... brushed you off instead of fought with you." Or so he reasoned.

"You were in danger?" Freddy worked out that much from the story. And the Percy guy saved him. It sounded really unfair that demigods were always in danger just because of who their parents were. "You'd think having a god for a parent would keep you safe."

He hoped Nico was right about Billy. He also hoped Billy showed up soon so they could work it out. He missed his foster brother, who he also thought of as his best friend.

He glanced out the window, realizing it was nearly dark. They had been talking for a while! "Look, Nico, I think they are starting."

"It's the opposite," he said with a shrug. It was far from ideal, but it was just what Nico was used to. Being here, though, with no immediate threat? That was the real challenge. It didn't stop him from being on high alert, but the lack of immediate danger allowed him far too much time to think. Sometimes he didn't know which he preferred, though, just that moment, he was glad he wasn't being chased or threatened, even if part of him worried about Hazel and Percy and their companions.

Nico glanced at the window, wondering how long they'd been talking. He also wondered when he'd talked to anyone for so long. Hazel, maybe? Months ago, at least... It didn't matter. He moved the plates of food aside and stood up, pausing without thinking to hold his hand out for Freddy, an offer if the other boy wanted it.

Freddy was surprised by the outstretched hand, but he grasped it, grateful for the help getting to his feet. He smiled as their hands met, remembering the slight chill he felt when he accidentally brushed Nico's hand when they shared popcorn during their show the other weekend. It wasn't a bad feeling; in fact, it was a nice one. He propped himself on his cane. "Thanks," he said. It wasn't that he couldn't get up on his own, but sometimes it was nice having help, especially when he got to...

...again, he wondered where that thought came from.

"Welcome," he said, taking his hand back once Freddy was up and not going to lose his balance or anything like that. He then proceeded to pick up all the food, setting it back on his desk to be dealt with properly later. There was still so much left that he thought they could all eat from it for days and not worry about being hungry (or maybe that was just his perspective of the amount left given his own small appetite. Who knew).

And then there was a moment where he wasn't sure what to do with himself, where he twisted the ring on his finger as he took a few steps back toward Freddy. But he recovered quickly, throwing his pillows back on his bed, saying, "Do you have a lot of July fourth traditions?"

"Rosa and Victor are big on holidays, but I don't know if...like, I've been with them for a few years..." He shrugged. He didn't think Rosa or Victor would abandon him any time soon, but he wasn't sure he could claim anything as "tradition" with them yet. It had been about four years since they brought him home, but holiday traditions seemed like something longer in the making. "People in general do pretty much what Mr. Stark is doing. You know, barbecue, games, fireworks."

Nico wondered if he'd accidentally stumbled onto a sensitive subject, and he instantly regretted asking. He didn't know for sure if it was, but that voice in the back of his head spoke up, berating him for being so rude, so nosy, so typically himself. He clasped his hands together, doing his best to silence that voice.

"Sounds like similar traditions in at least two worlds," he said with a nod, trying to focus instead on Freddy's voice instead of the one in his head. "At least from what I've seen." Which wasn't a lot, but it was more than having no idea what the day was about. He may have been stuck in a hotel for decades, but he at least knew some things.

"But, uh, speaking of fireworks, do you wanna..." Nico trailed off and motioned to the window as what he thought the first few might be going off. Or maybe it was somewhere in the middle? He wasn't sure. He hadn't been paying attention to the sky.

Freddy looked where Nico gestured. "Yeah, cool," he said. He moved closer to the window as splashes of color lit the sky.

Nodding absently, Nico followed, careful not to stand too close to Freddy in case he invaded his personal bubble. And because, well, it just didn't seem like the right thing to do. Not that he didn't like Freddy! It was just easier to have a little breathing room. That was all. Just enough space to stand next to him but without standing on top of him.

Acutely aware of Freddy's presence, he tried to focus instead on the explosion of colors outside the window, grateful for the lack of noise from them. They were pretty, as far as explosions went, and he let himself relax a little, let himself get momentarily lost in the display.
