Nico had initially run away from panic. That same panic that had gripped him during Pride had lingered, keeping him away. It hadn't been as strong as it had initially, but it was still prevalent in his system, a quiet, nagging voice that kept him company while he holed up on the forty-third floor of some abandoned (or perhaps just not yet purchased) office building. It was the reason he stayed away from the apartment.

But then he'd checked his phone (still amazed that it didn't seem to malfunction around him), and saw a message from Freddy.

Initially, he ignored it. Why would the other boy bother with him? It wasn't like they were friends, especially not after disappearing on him. That wasn't what friends do, or so he thought, and why would anyone want to be his friend? Yet, Freddy had noticed he hadn't returned. And he hadn't insisted he return. He'd only wanted to know that Nico was okay. That, above anything, prompted Nico to respond, and, after much thought, was why he'd agreed to meet Freddy in his room.

The first thing Nico noticed when he silently stepped out of a shadow in the corner of his room was that he had't changed his clothes (or had really bathed if you didn't count scrubbing his face and hands in the bathroom of the office building) since Sunday. The second was that Freddy had actually shown. It wasn't so much that he doubted he would as a voice inside his head told him he wouldn't -- a voice that had been proven wrong.

"Hi," he said, looking from Freddy to the food and strange lunchbox and back again, twisting the silver skull ring on his left middle finger.

"Hi." Freddy suddenly felt awkward, like he didn't know what to say, which was rare, because Freddy always had something to babble about. He didn't know why Nico disappeared, but he had been really afraid the entity sent him back. He was relieved when Nico answered his post on the web, but now he wondered why Nico agreed to meet him. Did he feel like he had to? Freddy hoped not. It wouldn't be the first time he was too pushy, after all.

Freddy, being a typical male, didn't notice Nico's clothes or anything remarkable about his appearance other than he was...

Where did that come from? Freddy blinked quickly. "Erm, I got us food. Mr. Stark did something to keep everything good." He set down the plates on the desk. "Sorry, they were getting hard to handle with..." He jiggled his cane.

"N-no it's fine," Nico said with a shake of his head. Cane or no cane, it looked like a lot of food for anyone to be expected to just hold. Of course Freddy would want to set it down. He would have wanted to, too. He was only sorry he hadn't really told the other boy to do so sooner. Nico had better manners than that.

Then why did you just stand there, staring? whispered a snide voice in the back of his head, almost as if it knew the answer. He shook his head again, pushing the thought from the forefront of his mind, though he knew it lingered, waiting to fill his head with doubt without warning.

"That looks like a lot of food," he said, taking a few steps toward the desk, doing his best to focus on something easy, something that would keep away his worries. "You didn't have to." He didn't eat that much anyway, though it smelled delicious. He reached out toward one of the plates then stopped.

"You--I--Thank you," he said, looking at Freddy. He wasn't sure if he was thanking him for the food or for not telling anyone he was gone, for reaching out to him or for showing up like he said he would, or for something he couldn't even place.

Glancing around the room, partially to prevent himself from staring awkwardly at Freddy and making things weird, he gave a small wave with his hand. "Feel free to sit wherever." It wasn't like it was a room full of furniture, though it still had a desk chair, a bed, and a small chair by a bookcase. "I can... I can always move things around, put the chairs to the desk like a table... Or there's the floor by the window..." Or he could shut up and let Freddy decide what he wanted to do and where he wanted to sit.

"Sure." Freddy, finally relaxing, grinned. "We can put some pillows on the floor," he suggested. "Like a picnic, sort of." He didn't admit it was easier for him than sitting on the floor itself. "If you don't mind," he quickly added.

Nico shook his head again. "No, I don't mind," he said. "A picnic sounds like a good idea." His lips quirked just a little bit in the approximation of a smile before he moved toward his bed. He grabbed a few pillows off his bed (all black, because apparently this entity thing thought he preferred black in everything, not just his clothes. Thankfully the walls and floor weren't black, or he might have gone crazy from feeling trapped in a box) and set them up on the floor so they could sit down with their backs against the bed and face the window. He briefly wondered if they were clean enough before heading back to the desk to grab the food, waving at the pillow pile for Freddy to sit where he wanted.

Freddy noticed Nico's mouth move slightly and couldn't help feeling excited about the response. Maybe he really wasn't annoying him! He scurried to the pillow pile and sat down. "I got a sample of everything," he told Nico. "Everything looked really good and Mr. Stark didn't mind."

A sampling of everything seemed like an understatement to Nico as he brought over the plates of food, one stacked atop the other with more plates used to cover the food. Then again, anything more than one plate seemed like a lot to him. Carefully, he set them down on the floor before sitting down, adjusting the plates so they were easier for both of them to reach.

Why are you here, he wanted to ask, taking the top plate off the nearest plate. Instead, looking at a small pile of hot dogs, he said, "Are you sure you want to miss the fireworks?" He glanced over at the window, at the slowly dimming light. Freddy had time, he reasoned, if he did want to watch from the roof. And, he realized, he wouldn't begrudge him if he did.

Freddy shoveled food into his mouth just as Nico asked about the fireworks. "Hmmm-hmmm!" He said, his cheeks filled like a chipmunk. as he vigorously nodded. He finally managed to swallow the food. "We can see them from here," he assured Nico. "It will be nice." He glanced down. "I mean unless you want me to go..." He rarely gave people a choice about his presence, but Freddy could tell Nico was different. He didn't want to push too hard; he wanted Nico to keep hanging out with him.

Grabbing one of the hot dogs, Nico shook his head a little bit. "You can stay," he said, pausing a second to think on what he said. Was that the right thing to say? Freddy was allowed, he was giving him permission to be in his room, but it was also... it was also about wanting him there, he realized. He wanted Freddy to stay, wanted to be friends with him, even if he couldn't figure out how to bridge that gap, even if he was terrified that it would all crash around him like every other relationship he had. In that moment, wanted to try.

Nico shifted a little on his pillow, adding, "I'd like you to stay."

Freddy broke out into a grin. "Okay, cool," he said. He took a few bites of potato salad and glanced out the window. "They should be soon," he added. "The sun is going down. Have you ever seen fireworks?" He didn't know what demigods actually did for fun, after all. He glanced down, embarrassed. Little red blotches grew on his cheeks. "Er, sorry, probably a stupid question. I just don't know...what is your world like?"

His lips twitched slightly. "I have, yeah," he said, thinking about one of the times he had Bianca had seen the fireworks in Washington, D.C. He also had the vaguest impression of some kind of festival with fireworks, though he couldn't pick out the details. It all felt so long ago, and not just because it was.

What was his world like, though? That was a hard question to answer. He furrowed his brow slightly, trying to find the best way to describe it.

"All the myths about deities are true," he began, figuring that was the easiest. "Greek. Roman. Egyptian. Norse." He realized he didn't know if Freddy's world had the same myths as he did, but he continued. "With that comes all the monsters. Drakons, cyclopes, pegasi, titans, giants -- all of them." He paused, pushing thoughts of Otis and Ephialtes and that jar from his head.

"There's a lot of trying to keep the world safe, trying to keep people safe from monsters they can't see because of the Mist -- a kind of magic that sort of hides anything crazy and supernatural from being noticed by the average person." Sometimes he wished he could go back to that world of not knowing, though, in the end, he knew it wasn't any easier than knowing. Just different.

There were many names Freddy recognized although he couldn't say he remembered all the different mythology tales; nonetheless, he listened patiently, really wanting to know about Nico's home. "So," Freddy said, working it out slowly, "you are saying I could be under a mist right now? Like your world could actually be in my world too?"

"Assuming Batman exists in my world, yeah, I guess so," Nico replied, taking a moment to consider it. He might not really have heard of Batman prior to Freddy, but did that mean he couldn't exist in his world? He wasn't entirely in touch with what people who weren't busy with real life myths were up to. Maybe he could actually exist. And he'd read that link from Freddy, and Batman didn't sound supernatural, so there'd be little reason for him to have really paid attention to his existence. Sure, his dad wanted him to be more in touch with the century he was living in, but Hades didn't really understand how hard that was. He didn't really understand a lot of things. The downside to being immortal, he supposed.

"What about your world? What's it like," he asked, genuinely curious. He'd picked up a few things from what Freddy wrote (like Batman), but that didn't mean he knew a lot about it. Or much of anything about it, really. He hadn't really wanted to get to know anyone or their worlds, but, if he were stuck here, he thought he could at least get to know Freddy's world. And, maybe, Freddy, too.

Freddy finished off his plate (although there was still plenty of food left for the next day) while he listened to Nico. He liked listening to him, possibly because it was rare for Nico to talk so much at once. For Freddy, a natural babbler by birth, listening was a big thing, but he found it took no effort then. "My world," he repeated. He shrugged. "A lot like this one, I guess, except I live in Philadelphia. It is in Pennsylvania. Until a few months ago? I didn't really think Batman was real or anything, just a really cool legend, you know? But then my brother...well, foster brother unless he wants to be my brother...well, Billy became a superhero. Some wizard gave him his powers because he was getting old and weak. Now Billy just says 'Shazam' and becomes an adult superhero who can fly and kick ass and stuff." He glanced down, biting his lip, remembering he still didn't know if Billy and their family were okay. "Not sure if he is okay. We sort of had a fight before I got here." He pulled the containers holding the snow cones toward him. "Want one?"

Quietly, Nico listened as Freddy spoke, giving the other boy his full attention (though he was careful not to stare because that would have just been weird). He wasn't sure what to make of a wizard giving someone his powers, but he supposed there were weirder things out there. And it sounded kind of... cool, really. Maybe not being an adult part, but the rest of it. But what if his brother couldn't speak? Did the whole Shazam thing only work if he could verbalize? Would it work if it were a shouted whisper? And what kind of fight?

Instead of asking those questions, he nodded, responding with, "yeah," as he turned his attention to the snow cone containers.

Reaching for one of the containers, he paused, looking back at Freddy. "If your brother's anything like this guy I know, he'll be okay. And..." He paused, thinking of his sisters, of Bianca going off on some stupid quest, of Hazel on her own quest and not knowing if she was okay or not but knowing she was capable. He thought of the fight he'd had with Bianca, of his anger toward Percy that could have consumed him. "You always fight with the people you care about. They're the ones who get under your skin, but you get under theirs, too. It's backwards, but..." He shrugged. "It's family."

Family. Freddy once asked Jughead if he thought their little under 18 floor was a family and then told Nat he thought several of them made their own family here. Still, he missed his family from his reality too. "If that is true," Freddy, smirking, replied, "Well, Billy must love me a lot!" He pushed the container closer to Nico when the teen reached for it. "Is the guy your brother?" He asked.

Nico took the container Freddy moved closer, pulling it up to look inside. "I don't have a brother," he said, curious how the box kept the snow cone cold, focusing on it briefly as he tried to figure out how best to explain Percy. Technically, they were cousins, and that, well, that was a thing that was more disturbing than just about any other thing when it came to Percy. But he also thought they might have been friends of a sort, if you used the terms friends loosely. He didn't hate him like he had when he was ten, but it was still so stupidly complicated. Why had he even brought him up? Why had he tried to reassure Freddy about his brother? Why did he let himself open that can of worms?

"He's more..." Gods why was it so complicated? "He and a couple of other people found me when I was ten at a school and saved me from a manticore." He could still remember the Mythomagic stats for manticores. "He's another demigod. Annoyingly big deal but a good guy overall. Always tries to do the right thing. Cares about his friends. He even cares about his enemies," he said, thinking about how Percy had tried to save him even when he'd stubbornly refused help despite needing it.

"So if Billy's anything like him, he'll be okay. And I'm sure he cares about," he finished, thinking that if Billy were anything like himself, if he fought with people he cared about, fought because he cared, well, he probably really did care about Freddy. "Otherwise, he'd have just... brushed you off instead of fought with you." Or so he reasoned.

"You were in danger?" Freddy worked out that much from the story. And the Percy guy saved him. It sounded really unfair that demigods were always in danger just because of who their parents were. "You'd think having a god for a parent would keep you safe."

He hoped Nico was right about Billy. He also hoped Billy showed up soon so they could work it out. He missed his foster brother, who he also thought of as his best friend.

He glanced out the window, realizing it was nearly dark. They had been talking for a while! "Look, Nico, I think they are starting."

"It's the opposite," he said with a shrug. It was far from ideal, but it was just what Nico was used to. Being here, though, with no immediate threat? That was the real challenge. It didn't stop him from being on high alert, but the lack of immediate danger allowed him far too much time to think. Sometimes he didn't know which he preferred, though, just that moment, he was glad he wasn't being chased or threatened, even if part of him worried about Hazel and Percy and their companions.

Nico glanced at the window, wondering how long they'd been talking. He also wondered when he'd talked to anyone for so long. Hazel, maybe? Months ago, at least... It didn't matter. He moved the plates of food aside and stood up, pausing without thinking to hold his hand out for Freddy, an offer if the other boy wanted it.

Freddy was surprised by the outstretched hand, but he grasped it, grateful for the help getting to his feet. He smiled as their hands met, remembering the slight chill he felt when he accidentally brushed Nico's hand when they shared popcorn during their show the other weekend. It wasn't a bad feeling; in fact, it was a nice one. He propped himself on his cane. "Thanks," he said. It wasn't that he couldn't get up on his own, but sometimes it was nice having help, especially when he got to...

...again, he wondered where that thought came from.

"Welcome," he said, taking his hand back once Freddy was up and not going to lose his balance or anything like that. He then proceeded to pick up all the food, setting it back on his desk to be dealt with properly later. There was still so much left that he thought they could all eat from it for days and not worry about being hungry (or maybe that was just his perspective of the amount left given his own small appetite. Who knew).

And then there was a moment where he wasn't sure what to do with himself, where he twisted the ring on his finger as he took a few steps back toward Freddy. But he recovered quickly, throwing his pillows back on his bed, saying, "Do you have a lot of July fourth traditions?"

"Rosa and Victor are big on holidays, but I don't know if...like, I've been with them for a few years..." He shrugged. He didn't think Rosa or Victor would abandon him any time soon, but he wasn't sure he could claim anything as "tradition" with them yet. It had been about four years since they brought him home, but holiday traditions seemed like something longer in the making. "People in general do pretty much what Mr. Stark is doing. You know, barbecue, games, fireworks."

Nico wondered if he'd accidentally stumbled onto a sensitive subject, and he instantly regretted asking. He didn't know for sure if it was, but that voice in the back of his head spoke up, berating him for being so rude, so nosy, so typically himself. He clasped his hands together, doing his best to silence that voice.

"Sounds like similar traditions in at least two worlds," he said with a nod, trying to focus instead on Freddy's voice instead of the one in his head. "At least from what I've seen." Which wasn't a lot, but it was more than having no idea what the day was about. He may have been stuck in a hotel for decades, but he at least knew some things.

"But, uh, speaking of fireworks, do you wanna..." Nico trailed off and motioned to the window as what he thought the first few might be going off. Or maybe it was somewhere in the middle? He wasn't sure. He hadn't been paying attention to the sky.

Nodding absently, Nico followed, careful not to stand too close to Freddy in case he invaded his personal bubble. And because, well, it just didn't seem like the right thing to do. Not that he didn't like Freddy! It was just easier to have a little breathing room. That was all. Just enough space to stand next to him but without standing on top of him.

Acutely aware of Freddy's presence, he tried to focus instead on the explosion of colors outside the window, grateful for the lack of noise from them. They were pretty, as far as explosions went, and he let himself relax a little, let himself get momentarily lost in the display.
