WHO sebastian and hope
WHAT hope is gonna meet sebastian
WHEN this evening

WARNINGS/SPOILERS probs Legacies and tbd
STATUS on going

This city felt cold and not just in the actual sense. There was something discomforting about the tall structures that boasted metal and stone. Some of the buildings had fascinating design and character, but some of them were beyond impersonal. The vibrant life in New Orleans did not seem to be nearly as present in this place. Sebastian missed Mystic Falls, what with its woods and the Salvatore School. He was not pleased with how he kept getting thrust into places he did not know or understand. He took some delight in learning about modern things, but he was starting to feel overwhelmed.

Why was this city so large and loud?

Sebastian pushed away from his spot leaning against the outside of the apartment complex as he saw Hope exit the building. "Ah, Hope," he said with a slow smile. "It is, as always, lovely to see you." Elizabeth was friends with Hope and he was not going to alienate those she seemed to like. "How far is this park you spoke of; if you would be so kind as to tell me."

He honestly did wish to go someplace less surrounded by the chaos of this city, but he was also hoping to ask Hope where he could acquire himself blood. The hunger was always threatening to make him lose control. How easy it would be to shred throats. Sebastian distracted himself from that thought by running his thumb over his Daylight ring. A misstep like that would most likely mean Elizabeth would get revenge by stealing the sun from him.

"The air here is a new experience," he remarked in an amused tone as he wrinkled his nose in disgust. "Hardly fresh."

Hope was in the middle of pulling her coat on when an unfamiliar voice called out to her. Actually, it was mostly the vocabulary and the cadence that was unfamiliar, and she realized why as she saw the person in question. Well shit. With an arm halfway in the sleeve of her coat, she stopped dead in the middle of the sidewalk, her mind working to process what was happening. Yes, there were plenty of doppelgangers here, but one of Harry wasn't what she'd been expecting, not from her own world. There were differences, there always were, but it wasn't enough not to unsettle her.

She'd been distrustful of him over the journals and in some respects she still was, but wearing the face of one of her friends made that just a little bit harder to maintain. Damn him.

Brain finally catching up, she roughly pulled her coat the rest of the way on, wrapping the front tightly around herself like it was armor. "It's this way—not too far to reach the edge, but it takes a while to get deeply into it." She started walking north, assuming he'd start following.

"Wait until we walk over a sewer grate. Especially if they're selling nuts in the corner." Which was almost every corner in Midtown. It was a blend of scents that really made her despise her wolfish nose.

The stare was noted, but he refrained from saying anything sarcastic. Hope didn't know him and he wasn't looking to make her snap his neck so soon. Being in chains was not one of his favorite pastimes. Sebastian enjoyed his freedom and was working to keep it intact.

Once the young woman took off walking he followed behind her a few steps as he studied the buildings around them. The bits of nature peeping up here and there were refreshing. Humanity had advanced so far in his time buried. He couldn't help wondering for a moment how much he had missed. Cassandra had done it for his protection and it wasn't like she had planned on being ripped limb from limb so he was stuck in a state of not death. There was no changing what had happened which meant he was just going to have to adapt to the modern world in a tougher jungle.

"It is amazing more people are not growing sick from the smells," he shoved his hands into the pockets of his jacket as he finally moved to walk beside Hope. "I must ask, but you do not have to answer, but what are the chances Landon will get over the little grudge he has towards me? I know so few people here and I feel it is wise to keep those I do know close." Sebastian wasn't lying, he did plan to keep those he knew close since he was already feeling so adrift in this place. "Even if they do not know of me yet, Hope."

The loud blaring of a truck horn had him tensing slightly. Why was this place so loud?

"I fear your statement of me getting used to this place may take a while to come into fruition. Tis something I shall have to deal with, among other things."

She wasn't entirely sure the people here—aside from those in the Villa—were people, but New York was New York no matter what pocket dimension they were in. "They become nose-blind, I think. And there probably aren't a lot of people like us in Manhattan." And not just because he was a who-knew-how-old vampire and she was one-of-a-kind. "Besides, the miasma theory was replaced in the mid-1800s. You don't actually get sick from smells."

"Just how well do we know each other in the future?" It wasn't an answer, but she couldn't help the question, glancing over at him while she waited. "All I know is you killed him, so it's a bit hard to answer that. Wait, you killed him and you put him in the trunk. That's all I know." Landon had been pretty forgiving towards her in the past and apparently the future, but that was a different case. She pulled her coat even tighter, crossing her arms and sandwiching her hands between them and her body.

Noticing the sudden shift in his posture, she quietly murmured, knowing he'd be able to hear it even with the noise. "Soon." Central Park wasn't that far, and the noise cut off pretty quickly once you were inside. Smells took longer.

"If you fight it, it definitely takes longer."

Sebastian merely made a sound of agreement as she spoke about nose-blind and something about miasma. What was a miasma? He was not sure her comment was actually true. He was rather positive he was going to throw up from the stench. The last of the blood sustaining him would coat the streets in an extreme case of irony.

He raised an eyebrow as she brought up the question of how well they knew each other. He couldn't help smiling faintly as she brought up the fact he shoved Landon in a trunk. "The minor correction is Elizabeth and I put him the trunk, but yes, I did snap his neck before the whole trunk development. You first met me because a particularly vicious monster was feasting on lies. I gave up my protection charm from Cassandra to help defeat the creature and the rest is history as they say."

"I am not fighting it," the words came out a bit annoyed and was followed by a sigh. "I spent centuries desiccated for my own protection and all of this," he motioned grandly around them to the buildings. "Is not anything like Roanoke. Civilization has advanced so far and now I have quite a bit of catching up to do. Though...we were talking about Landon. Who, by the way, decided to run away from the school for some reason or another. You sent Elizabeth after him and I went with her. Perhaps snapping his neck was not the best possible solution to getting the turnip back to the school, but he does so chatter on. Would it have been better to let dear Elizabeth spell him?"

The air seemed to change slightly and Sebastian found himself reacting without thinking. His vampire speed took effect and he reappeared off to the side of the entrance of the park. He stared up at the trees before moving to place a hand against the trunk of one of the trees.

As far as Hope was concerned, none of these pieces were lining up. If Sebastian helped defeat this vicious monster at some great personal cost, then why was Landon so wary around him? It can't have been entirely the trunk incident. He definitely had the kind of demeanor that led her to believe butter wouldn't melt in his mouth, so Hope was erring on the side of trusting Landon's feelings on the vampire next to her for now.

"Pessimism doesn't help, then, if you don't want to call it fighting." The annoyance in his tone was immediately matched by her own as she snapped back at him. Besides, he was giving her half-stories about a future she didn't know, and what she was hearing was upsetting. "You're chattering, should we desiccate you again to solve that problem?" Hope was tempted to raise her hands to firm up the empty threat, but it felt cruel and she didn't want to risk Sebastian running off into the city somewhere to get away from her. He could do serious damage here.

Hope didn't even flinch as Sebastian took off for the woods, the speed triggering a longing in her more than anything else. At least he was heading for the park and nowhere else. She lengthened her stride to catch up to him, bypassing the entrance in favor of walking right in. "Are you sure you're not a hybrid?"

"A what," he asked at her remark about the hybrid comment. Sebastian let his forehead rest against the tree before finally turning to look at Hope. He slowly sank down to the ground, his back against the tree, and he rested his arms on his knees. This century was nothing like the one he had last interacted in. No, this place was teeming with humans that had created all sorts of technology and issues.

"I would ask you if you know what it is like to have people not know you, but it would be rather ridiculous on my part. You erased yourself from what I gather in an attempt to stop Malivore. Quite heroic, in a way I suppose." He twisted the Daylight ring around on his thumb as he frowned. "I find myself in a place where the only person who knows me is the one person I murdered. Landon is hardly going to go out of his way to teach me how to survive in a place of cellphones and weefee."

Sebastian banged his head back against the tree as he pinned her with a look. "I just want to survive, Hope. I am not trying to do something nefarious, no matter how much distrust you seem to harbor for me. Ask me whatever you want."

The trees eased him slightly, but this would never be Roanoke.

"Not important, I was teasing." Hope frowned as Sebastian seemed to deflate, sinking into a crouch opposite him, knee anchored on the ground. It was cold, leeching up into her body through her jeans, but she doubted he felt much of that.

The daylight ring was a curiosity, and Hope watched him fiddle with it while she pondered its history. "See, the thing is, I don't really know what it's like to have people not know me, not in the way you're talking about. I didn't even make it to the pit yet, I was still falling when I came here. And Lizzie was the only one who came here from after the pit up until you and Landon showed up. But I get what you mean." This was definitely going to take longer than her current position was going to be comfortable, so she moved to sit crossed-legged, fingers flashing a quick spell to warm the ground a little bit.

"I'll believe surviving is one of your goals if you'll agree that stirring the pot definitely is another one." There was no way he wasn't taking glee in some of what he was doing, especially where Lizzie was involved. And Hope wanted to protect her from whatever might be there that could send her back as far as the progress she'd made.

As for the opportunity to ask him anything... "Why did you need to be desiccated for your protection?"

His lips formed a faint line as he listened to her speak. Sebastian did not know what she had to be going through and wasn't planning on asking. "I see," he finally managed to say before giving her a faint smirk. His shoulders raised up in a shrug as he didn't fight the accusation. "Stirring the pot is a rather unique term, but I gather the idea. I do enjoy causing trouble of sorts."

An actual laugh escaped him and he rewarded her intelligent question with a sad smile. "I was not lying about the desiccation being for my protection, but it was to protect me from a situation I had created. Vampires were feared and I relished it. I used Roanoke as my feeding ground and after a certain point... I started to hunt to feed a different thirst. I just wanted to see red soak the ground and I kept my misdeeds from Cassandra." He paused as he glanced up at the branches above their heads.

"Cassandra was a witch and I loved her. The townsfolk enlisted her to find whatever was terrorizing the colony. She loved me, to the point of being willing to do something horrid to protect me. Cassandra summoned a monster worse than me, a Croatoan; it was designed to ferret out lies. I tried to stop her, she was keeping my lie. She would not listen, Hope, and I am the reason she is dead." His eyes stung as he talked about his greatest sin. "Cassandra desiccated me to keep me safe from the Croatoan and the settlers. So in that state, I was forced to watch as the creature went insane from all the lies and ripped my love apart while I could do nothing." He reached up and rubbed at his eyes since they were irritating him. A few tears had escaped while he was talking.

"My apologies," he ran his fingers through his hair before casting a look at Hope. "That was more than I meant to tell you, but here we are."

Hope was well aware of what a vampire could do when the blood lust was on them. When feeding wasn't about survival, but pain and suffering and death just for its own sake. She also knew that there could be humanity, however deep down inside it might be. Not always, but in her experience and knowledge, it was more likely than most thought, for even the worst. His story moved her, as did his tears, and even though she didn't want to, by the end of his story her eyes were brighter with unshed tears.

"That's alright." She cleared her throat and got back to the heart of it. "I'm glad you did. You have a different plan for here, I'm assuming?" No one had complained of people going missing, or turning in drained. He'd had plenty of opportunities. But survival could mean either way, once he got hungry enough.

Sebastian snorted faintly at her question before biting the edge of his thumb slightly as he nodded. "I was planning on asking Mister Saltzman if there is a supply of those strange little bags full of blood here for me to drink. Elizabeth also suggested animals once." Though it had been more a ruse to get him out of the car, but he didn't need to tell Hope that.

"I will admit I was hoping you might know of a way for me to get substance here. Falling back into my old ways would most likely lower me in the eyes of Elizabeth." His tone took an affectionate inflection as he spoke of the blonde Saltzman twin. "She may not know me yet, but I do not wish to become a person she does not wish to know. The last thing I need is for her to siphon the ring she gave me."

Sebastian glanced at the Daylight ring before letting out a long sigh. "I could always just feed from rats if I had to do so, as vile as that sounds."

"When was the last time you ate?" She'd heal and that would give them time to figure something out. "We don't have many vampires here, so I'm not sure we've got the blood bags to go with them. We can probably source them, but I don't know how long that will take."

The daylight ring had come from Lizzie. Now that was interesting. Hope couldn't help but look at it again, though she managed to stop a smirk. "Lizzie would definitely not be into someone like that." Hey, if it kept him in line, it kept him in line.

Animals were definitely another option, though inferior. She grinned at the idea of him subsisting on rats. "There are definitely enough of them, but I think we could find you something better."

"Before I arrived here, actually before I went on my little road trip with Elizabeth to get dear Landon back, so not recently enough." Sebastian knew the black veins under his eyes were starting to grow as he thought about the fact he was hungry. He reached into the pocket of his coat and pulled out a flask. Alcohol helped mask the hunger for a bit and that was his main way of coping at the moment. He uncapped the flask and took a long swig before offering it to Hope.

"It would be appreciated if I did not have to resort to the rats or make Elizabeth displeased with me. She is still processing it appears."

He stretched his legs out and crossed his ankles as he flashed Hope a smile. "You know there is something calming about being in an area with far fewer buildings or people. I can still hear the abhorrent noises, but they are just a tad less appalling."

Waving off the flask, she watched the alcohol start to work on him. But just barely. Not enough for her to trust something wouldn't happen. "Lizzie's had a bit of a time since she got here. Just let her do this at her own pace." Just because she was thinking about what she was going to offer him, didn't mean that she approved of Sebastian getting between Michael and Lizzie. Or that they were friends. It wasn't too much for her to give compared to other people.

Her mind made up, Hope sighed, rolled her left sleeve up, and offered her wrist to Sebastian. "You'd better stop when I tell you to." She could always magically inflict pain to get him to stop, but that was hopefully a last-ditch effort.

"As I told Elizabeth, I shall do whatever she asks of me," Sebastian assured her as he recapped the flask. He slid it back into his coat pocket as he felt a bitter taste in his mouth. Elizabeth didn't know him yet in this place and he was trying not to invade her space after being overly blunt with her. "She is so enchanting and if the most I can be is friends with her here than I will gladly accept that."

Sebastian had no plans of losing Elizabeth without a fight, but he would eventually accept being just friends.

He blinked for a moment in pure confusion for a moment as he glanced down at her wrist and then up at her face. That was most unexpected. He was not sure how to react at first before he reached out and grabbed her wrist gently. "You have my word." He leaned over her arm before he let his fangs appear just before he sank them into her wrist. The sweet nectar of life exploded into his mouth and he did his best to show some control.

"Yea, Lizzie's great." Was this how other people saw her when she talked about Landon? Gross. But at least the guy seemed to really like her. Lizzie could do worse, but Michael was still the best choice for her in Hope's opinion. Which didn't really matter! It was all up to Lizzie.

She winced as his teeth cut through her, letting out an involuntary whimper. Her skin tried to heal only to find his fangs in the way, the flesh ripping open again. The cycle repeated a few times before she felt the dull edges of the blood loss. She didn't cut him off yet, knowing she had more time before it would be too much for her to handle. She had to buy them enough time to figure out another solution, and that meant a good feeding.

It would be a great lie if he said he didn't want to drain her dry. Sebastian tightened his grip on her arm as he drank deeply. He grappled with the urge as he drank. It would be so easy to just take every last drop. The second he felt his hunger dull he yanked back from her arm as if she was on fire. "It would be wise," he said slowly. "If you moved away from me at this moment, Hope."

He brought his thumb up to clean away the blood on his chin. As he watched her he sucked the blood free of his thumb. He looked less pale now, a sign of how long he had actually gone without food. There had been a reason he had spent most of his time away from everyone else. Losing control had been just a moment away. "I will not be able to stop if we continue," the words pained him to say, but he needed Hope to trust him. He needed someone on his side in this place that would get him a source of food. Alienating her would mean he alienated everyone from their world. Sebastian wasn't stupid, he knew how things worked.

"My thanks, by the by."

It would be easy to trigger the hunter/prey instinct in Sebastian at that moment, so when he released her and told her to move, she scooted away from him slowly. Not very far, but with her blood in him now, she had no hope of outrunning him if he changed his mind anyway, that was what magic was for. It was just enough that maybe he wouldn't be tempted, but they could still talk. Luckily, there was also a tree there, and she let it support her.

Wiping the blood off of her wrist, the skin underneath was smooth already. If only her body would replenish as quickly as it healed her. Hope could feel how weakened she was, and she hated it. "Hey. At least you know when to stop yourself," she couldn't help but point out gently. And acted on it, but she wasn't going to give him too much credit. Rolling her coat sleeve back down to try and keep herself warm, she watched him for any sign of disingenuousness.

"You owe me now."

A laugh escaped him at her remarks. He could see why people seemed to rally around Hope. She was cunning and just a tad manipulative, but appeared to have a heart far too big. Sebastian closed his eyes for a moment as he let his hands rest in his lap. "So shrewd for one so young," he finally said as his laughter died off.

"What do I owe you?" He opened his eyes slowly and gave her a look of apprehension. "I am a man of my word when it comes to debts." He loathed being in debt to anyone, but this was one he knew was a necessity. His gaze flickered to her neck before he forced his gaze towards the branches above them.

"There was a time where I would not have stopped," he said softly. "I was a monster. Perhaps I still am, but I would rather not have to watch people die for my mistakes again."

His judgment of her earned him a smirk in return. "Yea, well, I might be young in years but I've managed to experience a lot of things." Most of those were bad things, of course, but she didn't know how much he knew about her past and she didn't want to reveal anything to him just yet.

"I don't know yet." She was a little busy at the moment focusing on not shivering. The ground over here hadn't been warmed. But judging by the way he was looking at her, her magic might need to be better spent elsewhere. It wouldn't even necessarily be his fault, not when he'd been as hungry as he was.

Still watching him, she slowly drew her legs underneath her body to get more comfortable. There was concern in her expression, but it wasn't for herself. "People can change. Just because you were a monster then, doesn't mean you're one now. Not if you don't want to be."

The shivering didn't go unnoticed and Sebastian finally removed his jacket without a word. It wasn't like he needed it to stay warm or anything, so he tossed it at Hope without a second thought. She was distracting. "So you shall hold a debt over me? Lovely," he drawled out in a mixture of annoyance and defeat. There was no telling what she would ask for from him.

"You say that," he pulled at some of the grass next to him and made a face. "But I am rather certain that those that know me are quite certain I am a monster. Any attempt I make at doing good will be met with apprehension and distrust. That being said, I suppose I shant let it stop me. I do not desire to be a monster here, not when there is so much I have yet to experience in this new world."

His fingers stilled against the grass as he gave Hope a look. "I know you help me so I do not start ripping heads off of people, but my thanks all the same. Tis nice to have someone to talk to openly."

Using the jacket more like a blanket, she muttered a quiet thanks. "Just the one. I think you'll survive." She'd discharge any other debts he may end up owing her immediately, but having one on hand for any future needs seemed prudent.

"I'm pretty sure you just proved my point. So you lost some trust—rightfully so. Doesn't mean you can't earn it back. That's how it works. You fuck up, then you work to prove you learned your lesson." Ugh, who was she right now? Dr. Saltzman?

She drew her knees to her chest underneath his jacket and hugged them tightly. "It's partially that, yes. But I also know how ... terrible it can be when you're isolated. No one should have to live like that if it can be helped."
