WHO: Landon Kirby and Hope Mikaelson
WHERE: Landon’s room (8c)
WHEN: After his arrival
WARNINGS: TBD
SPOILERS? Legacies 2x8

Landon’s mind was swirling with the weirdness of arriving in an alternate dimension. He would have thought that he was ready for everything strange that could possibly happen now, but he was wrong. It seemed that the world could always find a way to get stranger. Having people he knew here helped, though. Dr. Saltzman’s presence made everything feel safe, and Lizzie, well, that was familiar too. And Hope...well, that was the best thing of all. He didn’t try to hide the fact that he was hopelessly in love with her, and even had been when he couldn’t remember she existed.

But he felt guilty about that, too. Because while he loved Hope with every bit of himself, he cared about Josie too, and he hated having to choose between them. He was also still a bit annoyed at Hope for not telling him the truth when she cane back. Annoyed, but not angry. Not anymore. He understood where she was coming from, and why she did it. She was trying to do the right thing, but that wasn’t always easy. Sometimes you found yourself in a place where you had to hurt someone. Like when he’d had to choose between Hope and Josie. But that hadn’t been her fault and he didn’t blame her for it anymore.

When he heard the knock on the door, he took a deep breath and answered it. Man, she was beautiful and it was always so good to see her.

“Hey,” he said, suddenly feeling a bit shy. “You doing okay?”

Of course New Orleans couldn't come and go in Goodland without something happening. Not that Landon showing up was a bad thing! ... Or at least she hoped not. It didn't seem like it, though she'd been worried at first. And maybe was still a little worried now, but about other things that came with Landon being here, not Landon himself. She had no idea what had been happening back home while she'd been in Goodland, aside from one photo and a quick snippet of video. She'd been absent from both, and Lizzie's lack of memory had pretty much confirmed for her that her scheme had worked. And now, this.

In the meantime, she'd been here. Surviving, and branching out, and possibly becoming a completely different person. When Josie and Dr. Satlzman had arrived, it reminded her how different she was here versus at home. They'd both accepted the new her, even encouraged it, but Landon felt like the last test. Was she too different? She was also feeling a little shy as she stood in the hallway, waiting a minute before she knocked.

She'd had dreams about him while she was here, but seeing him in person was so much better. Warmth flooded her chest as her face broke out into a smile big enough to make her eyes disappear. "Hey yourself." She wanted to touch him but settled for balling her fingers up by her sides. "I'm not the one who just got here."

Well, it was a tiny bit awkward, sure, but that was to be expected. And the awkwardness was nothing compared to the feeling that came over him when he saw her - the feeling that cane over him every time he saw her. Being with Hope was like being complete. It was as if he’d been missing something his whole life and had finally stumbled across it. There was just something so epically right about it that it pushed away the awkwardness and he just gazed at her a moment, his eyes full of love and a slightly goofy smile on his face.

And he’d seen her just before coming here.

She looked a little different, though: he noticed that right off. She looked...happy. He’d seen Hope happy but usually there was darkness behind it and he didn’t see that so much now. She said she had a new life here, and friends, and it looked great on her. He did feel a bit queasy, though. She was so beautiful and smart and perfect...if she was happy and popular, she could have anyone she wanted. Why would she ever choose him?

He slid his hands in the pockets of his jeans, and rocked forward a bit on his feet.

“I’m fine,” he said. “I mean, weird is what we do, right? You look great,”

Flushing at the compliment, she took a step closer and rested her hands lightly on his chest. Four months. Four months without this feeling and god, she'd really been deluding herself all those times she'd thought it was okay he wasn't here. She wouldn't have wished him to Goodland for anything, not when she knew what this place could be like, but now that he was here she didn't ever want him to leave.

"You look ... different," she murmured, reaching up to touch one of his curls. It wasn't the hair, it was just a bit of everything. She couldn't describe it, but it didn't necessarily feel bad. Maybe a little more haunted, but also a bit more confident? She wouldn't have minded extended time to study. "Aside from, you know, being alive."

“Well, you know, dying doesn’t really seem to stick with me.” As much as he cared about Josie, he had never felt like this with her. Hope was...something rare. Something special. Something most people didn’t find in their lifetimes.

He stepped away from the door, knowing that if she touched him again he’d be lost. He moved towards the couch but didn’t sit down. Instead, he started to pace a little, knowing he needed to tell her but really not wanting to. He ran a hand through his hair, sending his curls flopping down into his face and not seeming to notice.

“Listen, Hope, I have to tell you something. Because I want to be honest with you. Always.” He paused, then continued. “While you were gone, I had no memory of you. And I...I dated Josie for a while.”

His eyes flicked to hers, nervously, unsure how she was going to react to that.

Following him slowly into the apartment, she sat on the arm of the couch and watched him, hands folded in her lap. Concern was etched across her face as he paced, and that feeling of dread settled on her again. Clearly this was something big. She gave him her full attention even as her brain screamed to retreat and save herself whatever heartache was coming.

She wasn't expecting what came out of his mouth, though. Hope felt the blood drain out of her face and a chill settle into her. "Oh." Logically, she knew she couldn't blame him. She'd done this to herself in a way. That didn't mean her heart didn't crack. "Are you happy?"

Even though Landon knew that he hadn't done anything wrong, he felt his own heart breaking too. He'd never meant to hurt anyone, but when she'd come back and their memories had been given back, it had been inevitable.

"We were happy," he said, wanting to continue with the honesty thing. "I mean, when I didn't remember what we had. When our memories came back..."

Well, he'd done what he'd done so many times before. He'd run, not wanting to face it. But he'd come back.

"When I remembered you, I ended it with her."

"Oh god, poor Josie." Chewing her lip, Hope looked up at the ceiling and blinked a few times to try to keep herself from crying. What an impossible situation. For all three of them. It might not have been Hope's fault—she didn't know she was going to come back from the pit—but out of everyone it could have been it was more her fault than Landon's or Josie's. She'd broken the hearts of two people who didn't deserve it.

And was she a monster for being a little happy that he'd chosen her? That had to count for some extra awful points. That and the fact that she kind of wished she'd never found this out. She and Landon had a history with honesty (and the lack thereof) and now she didn't want to hear the truth?

Landon approached her tentatively, wanting nothing more than to take her into his arms and comfort her. It was almost a compulsion - he couldn't bear to see her as upset as she obviously was.

"It's not your fault," he said. "It's nobody's fault. Except Malivore. You did the right thing."

He let his hands fall awkwardly, then took a chance and stepped forward to wrap her in his arms.

"I wasn't lying when I said I loved you even when I didn't know you existed. I saw you when I died. And I kept...uh, drowning myself so I could see you. Even though I didn't know who or what you were."

Fisting his shirt in both hands, Hope buried her face in his neck and let a sob escape. That he could even stand there and say she'd done the right thing and it wasn't her fault only proved that he was way too good to be with her. At least he didn't hate her. She had no idea about Josie.

She didn't like that he drowned himself to see her, but she was here, and he was here, and that wasn't going to happen again. "I love you, too. I didn't stop."

He held her close, softly running his fingers through her hair as he tried to soothe her. He was far, far from being an expert with girls, but there was nothing he wanted more than to make her happy, and hopefully that would at least count for something.

"And I still love you," he whispered. "I always will, I think. So if you're not like...really mad at me..." He trailed off. She'd know what he meant, he hoped. He wanted to be with her, if she'd have him, but she was also making him feel very vulnerable and he was trying not to ruin the moment with a silly joke or something. It didn't seem like the right thing to do right now.

Pulling back just enough to be able to see his face, she searched his eyes for a moment before softly smiling to herself. Not mad at him. She didn't really know what there was to be mad about, really. He'd been honest, which was all she'd ever asked for.

"Do you want to be my boyfriend?" Hope asked, cracking a lopsided grin as she echoed their conversation months ago. "Again, or still, or whatever?"

“You know what? I do. I really, really do.” It didn’t matter whether it was still or again, as long as they were together again. That was how things were supposed to be.

He grinned back at her, the bright smile matching his eyes as he leaned in to kiss her. He was practically shaking from the emotion, ever since his memories had come back he’d wanted this feeling back. This was where he belonged.

A thrill went through her when he leaned in, and she surged forward to shorten the distance even faster. Kissing him anytime was always her favorite, but she especially liked it when they were both smiling. Sliding her hands up to hold his face close, Hope sighed into the kiss before deepening it a little. She hadn't been lying about missing him, and she wanted to show him just how much she appreciated that he'd come here to her.

Landon wasn’t sure how long they stood there, kissing. He completely lost track of time, lost in the softness of her lips and the feel of her against him. He’d come home, he belonged here, and only a few people would understand how much that meant to him.

Somehow, they ended up on the couch, continuing exactly what they’d been doing standing up. After a moment, he came up for air, playfully grinning at her as he did. He was glad that he and Josie hadn’t gone all the way because he wanted his first time to be with Hope. Didn’t have to be any time soon, but he knew he wanted it to be with her.

“So,” he said, leaning in to kiss her quickly. “Does this place have a curfew?”

It had been months since she'd kissed anyone, but kissing Landon felt like recovering her muscle memory. She didn't even have time for doubt because it all fell into place naturally. She didn't know if she pushed or he pulled, but when she came back to herself again, they were on the couch. She was fairly certain they hadn't been on the couch the whole time, but she did feel a little dazed after all.

Hope groaned at the mention of the curfew. "It does, especially on this floor. A little magic got me around it when I lived up here, but now that I live with Dr. Saltzman it's a lot harder. Except when he's with his new girlfriend."

“Well, that sucks,” he sighed. “I don’t suppose he’s with his new girlfriend right now?” There was a hopeful glint in his eyes. He could stay here all night just holding her and kissing her, and he really didn’t feel like letting her go right now. Not now that they were back together.

“Or maybe there’s a spell you could use just to stay a little longer? I mean, I could try to fix dinner and burn it horribly?”

He had no question that was how it would turn out if he tried.

"No, but I'm pretty sure he knows exactly where to find me." Which was better than the other nights she'd snuck out. It probably wouldn't stand as a regular thing, but she had to assume he'd at least give her this first night with Landon without raising a stink about curfew.

"Are you hungry? Because I'm not sure if you've noticed, but we happen to be in New Orleans. And I didn't get to take you to the best places the last time you were here." Plus she wanted to show him her city, if he wanted to go out.

“We are?” He actually hadn’t noticed because he’d had a lot on his mind and had just tracked down his apartment and then reached out to see what was going on.

“I’d love that, Hope. I’d love to see where you’re from. And I’m sure people here can cook better than I can.”

He wanted to know everything about her and see everything she came from. He took her hand and squeezed it tightly.

"The Mikaelson house is here. It's a little bit empty, but it's here. And all of my favorite restaurants. Goodland stops before we get to where Mom's pack lived, but that's alright. They wouldn't be there, so it's just the woods at that point anyway." She was getting more animated with each word, clearly in love with the city even with Goodland's alterations. She couldn't wait to show him all of it, starting with the house.

"We don't usually stay places this long, so we got lucky. Usually, we live in Manhattan. And usually we go to school, too, but it's Christmas next week so we're off."

Landon watched her as she spoke, unable to keep from smiling at how happy and animated she was. She seemed so much...brighter then she had back home, and she deserved that so much after everything she’d been through.

“Show me all of it!” He said, and he meant it. “And let’s get some food, too - I am a teenage guy,” he grinned.

This place was definitely weird, but home was where the people you loved were. Maybe he could be happy here too.

Grabbing his hand, Hope tugged him out of the apartment. It wasn't long before they stopped in front of her father's house—now her aunt's—with a takeout bag from the po' boy place across the street. "This is the place," she told him quietly, watching him more than the house. Thank god none of the non-people lived here, she wouldn't have been able to handle that. Pushing open the door, she led him into the massive courtyard, then up the stairs to what had been her bedroom. The rooms were mostly empty, but it still felt like home.

"My Aunt Freya lives here now, back at home. But this was my room." There were blankets left there from when she'd intended to spend the night of the full moon. That hadn't happened, though. A flick from her fingers and they spread out nicely into a picnic blanket.

Landon knew that Hope’s family was rich, but this was the first time he’d been exposed to that first hand. When he was with Hope, he never thought about it, but it was hard not to as he looked around him. He didn’t even want to know what this place would cost. It was lovely, in an ornate, old-fashioned New Orleans kind of way.

“It’s beautiful,” he said honestly, feeling more then a little bit out of place here. They might have both grown up without parents, but in very different ways. Looking back at her, he squeezed her hand and when she spread the picnic blanket on the floor, he sat down beside it.

“It’s kind of cool. Like one of those old movies.”

Toeing out of her shoes, Hope knelt on the blanket and reached into the bag. "Of course, I've spent more of my time at the Salvatore School than anywhere else. For some reason when I think of home, it's this place I picture first." She handed him his sandwich, then took her own, sliding sideways into a seated position.

"It's one of the oldest houses in the quarter. My dad helped to found the city. My uncle owned the governor's mansion. It burnt down before I was born, but I own the deed for whatever that's worth." Probably quite a bit in land alone, but she had a vague idea that her other assets outweighed it. Money wasn't something she worried much about. She was a witch, and she lived at the school. Which, true, was partially paid for with her dad's money, but it wasn't like she owned it. "It's actually not burnt here, which was interesting."

She looked around the room, sandwich untouched. "This is where I was when they said my mom was dead."

Landon had picked up his sandwich and was about to take a bite when she spoke about her mother. He lowered it, untouched, and looked at her with deep concern. He knew that although she pretended to be okay with it, losing so many of the people in her life that she was close to had affected her deeply. It was one of the reasons she had pulled away from so many people, even him at first.

He reached out to her, putting his free hand gently on her leg closest to him. He didn’t say anything at first, hoping the simple fact that he was there for her would help ease the painful memories.

“Hey,” he said, finally, gently. “It sucks. A lot. But you’re not alone. You have friends here. You have me. And I’m not going anywhere. I’m stubborn and really hard to kill.” His particular ability was good for Hope, he thought. He was the one person who literally couldn’t die on her.

It had been utterly devastating for Hope when MG had attacked Landon and left him dead in the woods. She'd been furious at the world for taking away another person she was starting to care for, and with herself for caring again when she knew what that would mean.

And then he'd caught fire.

She'd had enough dreams (okay, sometimes nightmares) about that night that it was almost hard to discern what was memory and what was made up. But the end result meant the details didn't really matter that much. Landon could leave her in a lot of ways, but dying wasn't going to be one of them. After all of the trauma, it felt like a solid enough base for her to stand on, and she'd started to heal.

Covering his hand with hers, she flashed him a smile. "It's okay. The city's full enough of good memories with her, too. And Dad. And now you."

He smiled when she said things were okay, nodding and letting out a breath he'd been holding in. He worried about her - how could he help it? and he was glad to know that she was handling things okay.

"I'm glad I got to see it," he said. "And share this with you. And jeez, just be with you in this weird place. It makes this all a lot easier, you know? If I ever get kidnapped by another Jubilant Entity, I'll want you to be there then, too."

He grinned and then leaned in to kiss her again. What could he say, he just couldn't resist her. And he didn't think he was supposed to, anyway.

Hope still had so many questions for Landon, but most of them could come later. She was worried about the world back home, but she also had spent the last four months not intending to go back there. It wasn't as relevant as this moment right here, or the feel of his lips against hers. But they still had to eat, if only to fuel more kisses later, and she pulled away after a few minutes. Her whole face was lit up with happiness as she pointed to his sandwich.

"Definitely bring me with you next time. Lizzie was the only person I knew when I got here, and she didn't remember me until we asked the Entity to bring back her memories. Josie was next and she didn't show up for two months after me." Everyone else was dumped much more recently, but she wouldn't want anyone to be someplace like this too long alone.
