WARNING: Some language
STATUS: Completed via GDOC.
Wanda waited patiently at the restaurant she and Tony agreed to meet for lunch. It was still a little odd for her, but it still made her happy to have Tony here. It did make her feel better knowing that Tony knew that Peter and the rest of them were going to be alright. Wanda still felt like she was lying to Tony about his fate and Natasha as well. The again it didn’t feel like her place to tell them, but what she could do was spend time with both of them and enjoy the fact that they had second chances here, even if they didn’t know it.
The waitress stopped by to hand her her glass of water and a slice of lemon, she decided to wait for Tony to arrive before placing her order, but after a quick glance she thought the southwest chicken salad looked good.
Tony found himself in a much better mood knowing Peter (and the others) ended up okay. His one persistent nightmare since Loki attacked New York involved losing his loved ones so he rested easier knowing they would be alright back home. However, it did decrease his reason for wanting Goodland to exist now that he knew everyone would be okay. Still, he reasoned, no one knew how long they’d be stuck in Goodland so he might as well continue trying to crack its code with Cisco, Sam, and Barbara.
“Sorry,” he said as he rushed toward Wanda. “Things at the office...time got away from me.” He bent to kiss her cheek. “Good to see you,” he added.
Wanda smiled as Tony walked in. “It’s no trouble.” She replied. “I wasn’t waiting long.” The more she spent time here in Goodland the less odd everything seemed to be. Well, that wasn’t the entire truth, it was still odd but there were good things about this place. Tony and Natasha. It was good to see them both here but their being here also gave her hope. If they were here before their deaths, then that meant that Vision could arrive before his demise. They gave her a small bit of hope.
“How are things at the office?” She asked.
He pulled his suit jacket off and flung it on the back of his seat before he slid in across the table from Wanda. Under the jacket, Tony wore his trademark funky t-shirt and skinny jeans. “Hectic,” he admitted. “Kinda gives me insight into the old man, you know? Building from scratch isn’t easy. If Pepper…” He waved his hand. “Never mind that. Shit is getting done.” He tried not to dwell on how much he missed his fiancee. It had been easier to distract himself when he thought Goodland was all Pete had, but now that Tony knew better, well, he allowed small moments to miss people like Pepper, Rhodey, and Happy.
“Thanks,” he said to the staff who placed a glass filled with water in front of him. “How are you, Wanda? Who is your roommate? Getting along?”
A look of concern showed on her face but she decided not to press the subject of Pepper. Wanda could understand that feeling a little, there was hope for Vision to return yes, but Wanda was trying not to put all of her thoughts on the matter. There was a chance he could never arrive, and that was too painful to think about. There were some days where it was just easier not to think about it. “I’m sure it’ll turn out great. Look at it this way, there may be something you hadn’t thought of back home that you’ll think of here or get a chance to try something new that you always wanted to do back home but never got around to it. A chance for fresh ideas.” Wanda had no doubt that Tony would think of something new and grand.
“I’m alright,” she said honestly. Only Wanda shrugged at his last two questions. “Daisy, I believe is her name but we don’t talk much.” She was silent for a moment. “I suppose I could be a little more social with people.”
Tony shrugged. “I didn’t go to that pizza party,” he confessed. “It is one thing talking on the web, but showing up…ehhhh.” He pulled a silly face. “You know how it is.” He didn’t mention most of his web conversations took place early in the morning or late at night when the kids were asleep and he didn’t want to wake them by walking around. He definitely missed living in a large space where he could slide around without bothering Pepper (and, before her, the Avengers at the compound).
He paused when the waiter returned to take their order. “One check,” he replied when the waiter asked. He turned back to Wanda. “What I mean is everything in your own time.” He guessed she’d be better off talking to Clint or Steve, but for the moment she was stuck with him until one or the other showed in Goodland. “Besides,” he teased, “You are meeting me. How much more socializing do you need?” He grinned and reached across the table to tap her arm lightly.
His smile gave way to a thoughtful expression as he adjusted himself in his seat. “Wanda,” he said softly, “I just...I’m really glad you want to work with me after everything that…” He was really shit at apologies. “I really thought I was doing right by you, but…” He cleared his throat. “I should have helped train you, not…” He grimaced. “Well, place you under house arrest.”
“That’s true.” Wanda grinned playfully. “After this I’m probably good for a few days.” It felt easier and easier to joke around with Tony, it reminded her from before everything happened.
Her smile faded slightly. “I appreciate it.” That was the truth too. It hurt Wanda’s feelings, more than she was willing to let on when she had Vision keep her inside. The truth is that she knew she had to do a lot to get everyone to trust her, after everything with Ultron. Still, she thought she had been making progress and while Steve was quick to console her about the damage she had accidentally caused, she didn’t entirely feel that from Tony.
“I regret a lot of things.” Wanda said. “I’m sorry it had to end the way it did.” That’s especially true because the two of them never had a chance to reconcile.
“Yeah, me too.” Tony didn’t want things to escalate the way they did. The reason why or who did what was irrelevant in the aftermath of Thanos. He just couldn’t drum up anything besides gratefulness. “Buuuut,” he continued as their meal arrived, “You and I have a job to discuss, hm? Tell me, if I recall, you like...crafts? Art projects? Music? Things like that?”
This was what she needed. There was a sense of closure but it was also a good way to start a new beginning. Back home she never got that closure with Tony, but she felt his loss greatly. One more thing she added to the grateful for being in Goodland list. In that sense she supposed the Entity wasn’t too bad afterall.
“I have done some crafting, yes.” She looked thoughtful. “I admit I’m a little interested in the kind of work you do, but I do not think I could keep up.” She laughed. “Since I had the time, you know before Germany happened, I was thinking about taking a class on computer tech. Learning to code.”
“Well, coding is only half of it,” he pointed out. He took a bite of his cheeseburger and washed it down with water. “I can recommend plenty of free resources, but you need the eye for it too. You know, wrap it up with a bow.” He wiped his mouth. “You design it; we can always figure out how it gets coded later.” He stuck a fry in his mouth. “You know, just a thought,” he continued, “I think you could do it, but think it over.”
Wanda smiled. “I think I would like that.” It was something challenging for Wanda and that excited her the most. So often it seemed like she could only do damage and destruction, and she always secretly admired those that could create. Tony did have his flaws but she could at least admit that Tony’s heart was always in the right place, though sometimes it may have been misguided. Be that as it may, Tony would be one of the people she would want to learn from the most. After a few bites of her salad that mostly went untouched before now she changed the subject.
“How’s Peter settling in? He seems like he’s very quick to make new friends.”
“Yeah, he is a friendly one,” Tony replied. Perhaps a little too friendly sometimes; Tony worried about the kid trusting too easily. Tony, of course, was slow to trust most anyone so he guessed he might not be an authority on that subject. “I think all the news about...well, everything back in our reality overwhelmed him, but I think he’ll be alright.” He polished off the rest of his burger before going in for more fries. “Not the easiest conversations,” he confessed, “But I am glad it was good news in the end.”
“It’ll take some time, I’m sure.” Wanda reassured. She kept up her smile, but she could feel the knot in her heart begin to swell up. “There is good news.” Nodding in agreement. “You and the others saved a lot of lives.” Tony specifically, but she couldn’t say that to him. Not now anyway, and she hated herself for keeping up with the lie. Wanda had to remind herself that it wasn’t her story to tell, not unless he specifically asked her to tell him.
“I’ll make sure to keep an eye on him while we’re here too.” And back home. Not that she would be able to do much for Peter back home, they didn’t really know each other. It was hard to say because after her conversation with Clint, after the funeral, Wanda had no idea what to do.
Tony nodded at her promise. Carol mentioned as much when they spoke. He felt curious, like there was something he couldn’t put his finger on, but there were things to be done in Goodland before he could focus on anything else. He couldn’t do anything for those back home while he was in Goodland, but he could do something where he currently lived. “Thanks, I know he misses his aunt so the more people spending time with him, the better.” He pulled out his wallet, anticipating the bill. “You will consider my offer?” He asked. “I’d really like to see you at the company.”
Wanda smiled. “Of course I’ll consider it. I’d be happy to be at your company. Hey,” a quick thought occurred to her. “Are you busy after this? Would it be okay if I came with you to take a look around?”
Tony felt weight lift off his shoulders. Maybe this new life really could work for all of them. Wanda seemed to forgive him, which meant a lot to the man. “I’d love to give you a tour.”
