Peter & Tony
WHO: Tony Stark & Peter Parker
WHERE: Starts here & finishes in APT. 2-A
WHEN: Saturday, June 14th, evening
WARNINGS: Language
SPOILERS? Everything through Infinity War

Tony was a science guy, but he also worked with gods and fought aliens so it wasn't like the concept of alternate universes completely threw him for a loop, but he also just watched some random galaxy wanderers, a doctor doubling as a wizard, and his favorite kid turn to dust so forgive him if he doubted his sanity for a second.

"The actual fuck," he muttered not for the first time since that damn dry note smacked him in the face in the middle of a damn thunder storm. Was Thor showing off? Or was this finally the time Tony Stark became an official raving lunatic? Tony actually considered that option better than Thanos defeating him. If he had gone mad, at least everyone was safe. It wasn't like he didn't have similar dreams before, right? Hadn't he seen his loved ones dead before only to wake up in a cold sweat? The whole Goodland thing could just be a crazy dream.

After Tony failed to contact Pepper, he tried to walk home, but while he knew his way around New York City, he quickly realized it wasn't the city he recalled. Maybe this was part of Thanos' plan? Maybe if he went where the note told him, he'd find the others? At least if he was with them, he could try to save them.

That had to be it. Tony was wherever the dusted went and he had to go to the apartment listed in the letter. The thought energized him and he broke out in a run until he arrived where the map directed him. Ostriches? Seriously?

Tony found Apartment 2-A with a door that opened automatically for him, almost like it expected Tony, and stepped inside. Disappointment flooded him. It didn't look like a hostage situation, but instead a homey apartment with a fully stocked fridge. Hell, there were even clothes he'd choose for himself. He, again, guessed he was either crazy or really stuck in a parallel universe while everyone he loved faced danger at home.

It was too much even for Tony Stark. Way too much loss. Way too much responsibility. He pulled off his Iron Man suit and slammed it against the wall, but it didn't even make a dent. "Naturally," he said. He left the suit on the floor. He usually valued neatness, but to hell with it. Nothing mattered anymore. He pulled dry sweats on before throwing himself face down on the bed in what he guessed was his room. It did have the clothes that looked like his, after all.

Tony fell into a fitful sleep at some point; he knew he slept because the clock next to the bed told him it was several hours later. Tony, however, hardly felt rested. He groaned as he flipped onto his back. Was there booze in the place? God, let there be booze in the apartment.

He didn't want to get up. He wanted a stiff drink, but he didn't want to move. Too bad Dum-e wasn't around - the bot might have even gotten him the right drink. Possibly.

Tony exhaled deeply as thoughts of Dum-e turned to thoughts of Pepper, then to thoughts of Rhodey, then to thoughts of Happy, and then to...

He blinked back hot tears. He killed Peter. And now? Now he was in some sick joke of an alternate reality while the rest of his family were in danger. Did Pepper turn to dust too? Rhodey? Happy? Bruce? Steve?

Steve. Damn. Tony didn't want to think about him either. It all hurt too much.

He stared at the ceiling for God knows how long before he heard something. Did he hear something? Or was his mind playing tricks on him? He sat up to listen. Footsteps. Those were definitely footsteps.

He didn't bother with his suit. He didn't really care if someone (something?) killed him. He guessed it was just whatever poor sap was living with him anyway. He noticed there was more than one bedroom when he arrived.

He yanked the bedroom door open. "Would you hold it down for fuck's sake? Not really in the mood over here," he yelled.

The apartment seemed pretty standard to Peter, with a kitchen and living room and doors that had to lead to bedrooms and bathrooms. Was the guardian he was supposed to meet according to the note behind one of them? Did that mean he had to live with someone? He’d never lived with anyone but May, and the thought turned his stomach, especially as he realized he still had a very conspicuous suit on.

And then there was noise, movement and a voice, causing Peter to freeze.

“Mr. Stark?” Bewildered, Peter looked toward where the voice had come from, briefly catching a glimpse of a familiar looking suit. The helmet, above anything else, gave it away, and his spirits lifted. Mr. Stark was here. He could fix this. He would know what to do. He hurried through the apartment toward the voice, reenergized by finding someone he knew.

“Mr. Stark, what are you doing here? What am I doing here? One minute, I was climbing the donut ship,” he began, using his hands to punctuate his words, “and the next, I was falling! Skydiving? The parachute deployed, and -- this suit is crazy intuitive, Mr. Stark.” Was it the same suit he’d seen when Mr. Stark had brought him to the Avengers complex? It kind of looked like it. “And the self-contained environment is just--just awesome.” It definitely reminded him of a sleep spacesuit. He glanced down at it, then back up at the man.

Momentarily unsure of what else to say, Peter just said, “Thank you for the suit, sir.” And he meant it. Without it, he didn’t know if he’d have landed safely. And the fact that Mr. Stark kept thinking of him, well, that meant a lot, too. And having him here during this craziness meant even more than Peter could figure out how to say. “Thank you,” he said again, suddenly a little self-conscious about not knowing what else to say.

His mind was gone. He had to be in the hospital suffering from hallucinations. There was no way he was really in some apartment in a fake New York City with ostriches and Peter Parker. The kid was gone. Thanos said he'd wipe them out and he did. Or Tony thought he did...

...but alternate realities could exist. Tony understood that. He felt that everything around him was real. Or maybe he wanted it to be now - now that...

No one ever called Tony Stark a man of few words, but, in that moment, he fell speechless as he listened to Pete ramble. God, he thought he'd never hear that rambling again. Oh, sure, sometimes the kid talked too much, but Tony didn't really mind so long as they weren't in the middle of a battle or Pete wasn't interrupting him.

He took a few steps toward Peter, while never taking his eyes off the teen, like he'd vanish if Tony lost sight of him. "Kid," he said softly. "Are you really..." He hesitated, but then took Peter's face into his hands. He traced the boy's cheeks with his thumbs; he felt real, so real.

What was going on? Why was Mr. Stark acting so weird? Yeah, being transported to an alternate dimension was very weird (especially given all that he’d seen already in his young life), but the man was definitely staring at him. Had he even blinked? And why was he grabbing his face? Not that Peter minded, per se, but it was incredibly weird and not at all something he thought Tony Stark would do. He froze, not sure how to handle the action or what to make of it. Oddly, he was reminded of his aunt, of her comforting him over the years, and a tiny part of him relaxed.

“Mr. Stark,” he began, concern in his voice and on his face. “Are you… Is something wrong?” At least something more than being trapped in Manhattan. Hesitantly, he reached up, putting his hands on the man’s elbows as gently as possible. He wasn’t trying to pull the man away, just make some kind of connection back. “Did something happen,” he asked, glancing down at the man, trying to assess if he’d been hurt. Yeah, he was Iron Man, but Peter wasn’t so idealistic that he didn’t know there was a person inside the suit or that that person was very capable of being hurt. Far easier than Peter could be.

Tony's eyes shone with un-shed tears, which he blinked back quickly once he realized Peter seemingly had no clue what happened. "Me?" He forced a chuckle. "You know me, I'm always great." Still, he couldn't bring himself to let the kid go. When did he get so attached? Was it when he saw the inventions he made from literal dumpster goods? Was it when he realized Peter lost so much in his young life? Or was it when he took that tumble fighting that idiot, Scott? When, when, when....

Tony realized the list went on. "I just thought I lost you for a minute," he confessed. "I am so sorry, kid. I will do better, I promise." He told him once he wanted to break his father's cycle of shame, which he meant more than anyone could ever know.

Okay… This was definitely weirder than he thought it was. Peter wasn’t so incapable of noticing things that he didn’t notice Mr. Stark’s words didn’t match his expression or actions. Why did it look like he was briefly on the verge of crying? He opened his mouth and then closed it, not really sure what to say. So he stayed quiet, letting the man continue. Sometimes that was the better option, even if Peter tended to have a lot to say.

“I’m okay,” he said, not sure how to take the apology or the promise to do better. “The suit really helped. Actually, I think it did all the work.” Was he know out of a job if the suit could do all the work? Could it be controlled remotely like Mr. Stark’s suits? He hoped not. It’d be useful, but it didn’t feel right if the suit was the one doing all the work. Especially under the name Spider-Man. That just didn’t sit right with him.

“Oh! The wizard! Is he okay? Did you get here before you could get to him, too,” Peter asked, concern quickly filling his voice, taking shape on his face. He hadn’t meant to enter a different universe before saving the wizard. It had just… happened. Sometimes Peter wondered if that was just how his life was going to go, a series of events that just happened to him, leaving him to figure out how to handle the mess they left.
