PEPPER POTTS-STARK
TONY STARK

It was about two months since Tony and Pepper decided to leave whether or not they had a baby to fate. Tony, ever the pessimist, didn’t want to get his hopes up too high, but he really hoped fate was on their side. Oh, they discussed the morality of having a child in a magical town, but decided life always involved risk and that they couldn’t live in fear. Still, Tony hesitated to believe it would happen. Sure, Morgan was proof it could happen, but maybe she was the exception. Maybe she was meant to be their only biological child. Yet there they were waiting in a doctor’s office. Could it be true? Could Pepper be pregnant?

Tony held his wife’s hand in both his. “No matter what happens, we have each other and a great family,” he reminded her.

He wasn’t sure the words were for her, however. His stomach felt sick as the minutes ticked.

Pepper, recently, had been dragging a fair bit more than normal in the last few days. It would have been easy to excuse it and chalk it up to simply being busy preparing for the holiday, but it seemed different than that. When her period didn’t come, it meant it was time to schedule a doctor's appointment and let Tony in on the information.

She squeezed his hand, reassuringly. She was relieved that he was here with her, not that she would expect differently. She leaned her head on his shoulder as they spoke. “I know.” She said gently. “We have an amazing family… and if this isn’t it then well, that doesn’t mean it won't ever be it.” She told them both in a soft, careful tone.

“Right,” Tony agreed, although his tone betrayed his nervousness. He couldn’t help letting his guard down around Pepper. “But if there is a baby in there…” He chuckled. “He’ll be one lucky kid with you as a mom. Or she.” Damn, he was already thinking about what they could be having and the baby wasn’t even confirmed.

Pepper flashed her husband a smile, though there was just a little bit of nervousness behind it herself. “He or she would be lucky because I happen to think that we’re a pretty good team.” She admitted. And it was true, they complimented each other in ways that seemed trivial, but made their days so much easier.

“We’ll be lucky too,” Pepper said with a smirk, nudging Tony playfully to lighten the mood a little bit, “Look at all the bonus siblings it will have, on top of Morgan-- Peter and Ned and MJ and Hope and Laura and James-- and for us well, we’ve got quite a few babysitters to pick from if we ever need a break.”

Tony’s smile was genuine then. “And plenty to share diaper duty with,” he added. He was growing excited; he couldn’t help it. He loved his kids, but they were nearly grown. His brief time with little Morgan showed him how badly he wanted to be a daddy. He wanted to do midnight feedings and rock the baby to sleep. He wanted to hold a toddler’s hand as he took his first steps. He wanted it all. Was that so terrible?

He sighed and glanced at the clock on the wall. Time was suddenly moving unbearably slowly. “How much longer, do you think?

Pepper just wrinkled her nose slightly as she laughed, “I have a very hard time imagining Thor or Clint or Steve or Nebula on diaper duty…” She smirked at him lightly. She loved a lot of their friends, but there was a swath of them that she couldn’t imagine with a very little kid. Not that their friends wouldn’t love their child, if there was one, but the details might be slightly lost on them.

“Doctors are never on time, Tony.” Pepper said with a bit of a chuckle, “Plus, who knows how long the tests take.”

Tony couldn’t help thinking about Happy and Bruce then. He thought they might be chaotic at first, but ultimately the diaper duty types. However, he didn’t mention them. He, instead, laughed and said, “That is what Rhodey and Sam are for.”

Pepper was going to respond to him, when she heard the handle of the door start to turn. She exhaled a breath that Pepper didn’t know she was even holding when the woman in the lab coat came through the door. She was smiling though, and surely that was a good sign.

“Mrs. Potts-Stark, Mr. Stark,” the Doctor greeted them, and she made a quick note on her chart as she looked back up at them, “It looks like you are indeed expecting,” the Doctor beamed at them, “about two months along.”

Pepper let a loud, ungraceful gasp of breath out, as happy tears fell down her face. She looked immediately at her husband and let go of his hands only to pull him into a hug, burying her face in his chest. “We’re going to have a baby.” She repeated to him.

Tony fell stoic as Pepper leaned against him. Pregnant? She was really…

He suddenly registered her tears seeping into his shirt. They were really pregnant. His eyes filled with tears. “Honey,” he whispered, finally holding her close. He ran his fingers through her hair as quiet tears fell down his cheeks. That moment...that moment made everything worth it.

Once Pepper felt like she could breathe again, she slowly pulled away from her husband, her watery eyes meeting his. She was so happy, she couldn’t stop grinning at him. This felt like part of the puzzle that they were missing here, and now everything was complete. “I hope we have a little boy,” Pepper told him gently, “I hope he’s just like you.”
