Thursday: Not Spilling Secrets
Who: Cian and Mac
Where: Darkwater, the main strip
When: early afternoon
Cian had gone for a run after Ava had left, but that hadn't helped him much with his case of the fidgets. He was hyper and restless and he had things he needed to get for the party anyway, so he showered and got cleaned up and then drove his car onto the ferry to go to Darkwater. It seemed like an interminable ride, so he ended up turning off the engine and getting out to stand at the rail, enjoying the sight of the churning water all around him and the breeze that blew his hair back. There was a faint smile on his lips as he daydreamed, finding that he was still pretty damn psyched about last night. Man, how did that happen? It was crazy, but good-crazy.
Once he was in town he parked his car at the curb and made a quick run into the grocery store for sodas, chips and other party-type food. He had to figure some shit out, he thought, including booze. Luckily, he had alternate plans in case Liam fell through-- which he had no clue about after what had happened at Vapor the previous weekend. He hadn't seen or spoken to the guy since then. Once he got the car loaded up again, he decided to wander down past the shops and see if there was anyone he knew around. He took his phone out as he walked, sent a random text to Ava, answered a couple of texts from other people... and then ran smack into someone. Shit.
"Sorry," he said, stopping and glancing up, hoping that he hadn't seriously wounded anyone. "Oh, hey, Mac."
Mac had been sent out on errands by her mother, which was far less fun than shopping for herself. But she was still chipper about it, her buoyant feeling from earlier in the week sticking around. Hanging out with West briefly had done nothing but encourage her, as had the gushing to her mother. Who continued to look bemused and slightly skeptical at the same time. At least the boy had manners. That was important. Mac generally didn't get so boy-crazy, and the excitement would surely fade, it was all just the joy of The Beginning of something. No matter what that something would turn out to be.
In any case, Mac had been sent out for a few things, and was happily walking along, lost in her little dream world, when she ran straight into somebody. Who also ran straight into her. She made an involuntary squeak and took a stumbly step back. Then burst into her oddly-pitched giggles, seeing that it was Cian. Stuck to his phone. "Hey," she greeted, grinning and giving him the sign for 'hello'. "Watch where you're going there, sonny!" She made a playful mean face at him and shook her fist, then grinned again.
"Hi," Cian said, watching her carefully and trying to imitate the sign she made. He wasn't sure how well he did at it, but surely making the attempt would count for something! "I've gotta watch where I'm going when I'm using that thing." He couldn't remember literally running into someone before, but it had probably happened at some point. "Don't hurt me with that, okay?" He grinned back at her; the girl seemed so upbeat and cheerful most of the time that it was just about impossible to be in a bad mood around her. "What's goin' on?" he asked, stuffing his phone into his jeans pocket.
"You're okay," she told him, dimpling still. "I won't beat you up this time." She shrugged her petite shoulders then, still signing along with herself. It was habit, she didn't actually ever expect anyone to fully pick it up for her or anything; Mac could read lips just fine. "Just out running around for my mom. You? Talking to anybody interesting?" She'd always liked Cian. Actually, there were very few people that Mac didn't like. And maybe it was horribly bad and girly of her, but Cian was even more intriguing now because she knew he was good friends with Emmanuel.
"Getting some stuff for my party Saturday," Cian told her. "Are you coming?" Given what Ava had told him, he figured M would be inviting Mac to come to the party with him. Of course, he didn't know that for sure, and he didn't want to make assumptions considering he hadn't even talked to M since whatever it was had developed. He patted the pocket where he'd put his phone when she asked if he'd been talking to anyone interesting. "Couple guys from the team, Ava." Him talking to Ava wasn't anything new, though. They texted on and off all day when they weren't hanging out together.
Mac wasn't surprised to hear he'd been talking to Ava. They were one of those perma-friends couples. Her eyebrows raised at the mention of a party, however. "I hadn't heard there was one yet," she said. Of course, it was only Thursday, and it was pretty rare for teenagers to plan very thoroughly ahead. "But I'd love to come, yeah." She smiled brightly at Cian, wondering if M was planning to go. Or if he had other plans for them. Which would also be acceptable, even though she liked parties. She'd just have to see! "At your place, I'm assuming?"
"You haven't been checking Facebook then," Cian teased her. He'd mentioned it-- in all honesty, kind of obliquely, because he didn't want every single person from school to show up-- several times in the past week. "But yeah, six o'clock, my place. Bring swim stuff if you want. A lot of people'll be getting in the pool, I'm sure." It was probably going to be mass chaos, but that was okay. He figured he'd lock up his parents' suite and put away anything way expensive/stealable and he'd be all set. If shit happened, shit happened, and he'd deal with it the next day. He had until Tuesday to set things right again, so it was all good.
"Ah yeah, my computer was messed up for a couple of days," she said with a nose-wrinkle. Granted, it had been fixed, but she'd been kind of distracted away from it, too. Mac nodded, following along with his lips. Oooh, a swim party! Or a party with swimming involved! That sounded fun. She grinned, eyes ticking up to his once more. "I'd love to come, though, that sounds fun." And chances were, Emmanuel was already planning on going, so that just made it even more appealing. She'd just have to wait and see if he brought it up to her, too. "Are a lot of people coming so far?" she asked, a bit casually.
Cian laughed when she asked if a lot of people were coming. "Prob'ly more than my house can handle," he said. "Most of the people who're on any of the sports teams--" There were only a few he didn't get on with, and those people wouldn't want to come to his house anyway. Like Jessica. "--random people who live on the island, some crashers. I think Ava invited that one girl, uh..." He fumbled for Shoel's name. "Shoel?" He pronounced it like shoal, since he didn't know how to say it anyway. "Should be pretty crazy, but hopefully fun. You know I gotta have a party before my parents get back in town." He grinned.
Mac knew Shoel. Knew of her anyway. She didn't correct Cian's pronunciation since she couldn't hear it, but she got the jist of who he meant from his lips. "Well yeah, there's no other point to parents going out of town," she responded with a grin of her own. "It's never for their benefit." It did sound like it was going to be one hell of a party, though. Not that she was complaining at all. It had been quite a while since she'd been to one of those. She would definitely have to downplay it for her mom. "Sounds cool, though, I'll probably be there. ... Is Emmanuel coming?" She bit her lip and grinned a little, still attempting the casual thing.
"Supposedly it was for their anniversary," Cian told her, "but yeah, it's been completely for my benefit. I just about don't want them to come home." That wasn't entirely true; he was talking big in typical teenage-boy fashion, but he would have to admit that he was enjoying the autonomy he had while they were out of the country. His mother had called several times to make sure he hadn't gotten arrested or burned the house down, but he figured she wouldn't be completely satisfied until she got home to see for herself. That was all right, though. "Emmanuel?" he asked, giving her a look from beneath slightly arched eyebrows. "He better be, or I'll kick his ass." Not so casual, but Cian found it very cute.
Mac kind of wished she knew the feeling. Her parents never went out of town and left her alone. If they absolutely had to, one of her aunts always came to stay with her or something lame. Which wasn't too terrible, since she got to go with them on a lot of trips, but still. It didn't afford her much opportunity to have parties and junk. Maybe as she got older. From the look on Cian's face and the way his aura curled, she assumed that M hadn't told him about their recent 'development'. "Awesome," she said and signed, still with a rather silly grin on her face. She wasn't gonna spill it unless he asked. "Want me to bring anything? Except myself in a bikini?"
Mac was absolutely correct in that M hadn't told him a thing. Ava had. Cian figured he'd wait and get the scoop from M before he went around gossiping like a girl, so he wasn't going to ask Mac any detailed questions. He just smiled at her and replied, "Nah, just bring yourself. I got everything else covered." He knew the party had the potential for getting crazy out of control, but he couldn't say he cared. What normal teenager whose parents were out of town wouldn't have a party?
It was a wee bit disappointing not to be asked -- she definitely would, were she Cian, but she was nosy like that -- but Mac got over it in a few seconds. He would likely ask M, and that might be even better. ... and she really had to refocus, ugh. It had been quite a while since she'd gotten so giddy over a guy. She was probably starting to border on annoying. "So, how's things?" she asked, reaching up to fluff her hair a little. "Besides planning the party of the year?"
"Things're good," Cian told her. "I hate school a lot except for the sports part of it, so it's cool to have almost three months when we don't have to go." Well, the social part of it was okay too most of the time. It was just the classwork and homework that made him want to throw himself off the ferry in the deepest and most treacherous part of the ocean. "I've been chillin', ya know? How about you? Your summer going good?" It was the kind of random, social chat he'd do with anyone he ran into from school, but he definitely didn't mind it because he liked Mac. It'd be hard not to, and he was glad of it now that it seemed like she was going to be dating his best guy friend.
"Yeah, it's been pretty good," she told him. "Quiet, most of the time. So nice and relaxing. But it's only June, so maybe things will pick up." A grin crossed her face. But she was being not giddy! Not giddy, because that was silly girly-girl stuff. Mac didn't mind school, really. She did well, because she pushed herself to excel. It was just in her nature. Not to mention that she liked throwing a middle finger up at the idea that she had a disability. She could do anything the hearing could do, and she liked proving it. "I like my summers with a little excitement, after all."
"I'm sure they will," Cian said with a chuckle. The summer had more potential than it had had a few days ago, and he imagined Mac felt the same way. "Maybe my party can start off the excitement, and we can build from there." He considered this to be his last summer to not worry about anything much. Next summer-- actually well before then-- he was going to have to decide if he was going to try to force himself through college and hate it every bit as much as he hated high school or if he was going to take another route. "So, I guess I'll see you there." He smiled at her. "Gotta go make sure I have some booze lined up for the big night." He didn't plan to have enough on hand for people to get rip-roaring plastered, but you had to have booze for a parents-out-of-town sort of party.
Mac was equally optimistic about the rest of the summer. Like most summers, it stretched out in front of them, chock full of all kinds of potential. "We'll see, I guess!" she said, with as much enthusiasm as her flat tone could convey. She smiled brightly back at him and even gave a little wave as she moved out of his way so he could continue in the direction he'd been going. "That's totally important, so I'll let you get to that. See you later, have a good rest of the day." And since she was a huggy type of person, she rose up on her toes to give him a quick one-armed hug, then moved back again.
"You too, hon," Cian said, patting her back during the brief hug. She really was a sweetheart, and he was more glad than ever that M and Jordan's... whatever hadn't been any sort of dating thing. He could only imagine what Skank Girl would have to say about Mac, although hey, that could be as good a way as any to get her out of M's life. One negative word about the girl he'd started dating and M would most likely drop Jordan like a hot rock. "Later," he said with a smile once she could read his lips again, giving her a little wave and then heading on his way. Back to his car and over to Java was the plan.
