That First Night
Who: Cassandra Cain & Lizzy Raleigh
NPCs: Lizzy's sister Angelina, street thugs.
Where: Saint Mary's Park, Midtown, Gotham City.
When: Backdated to summer, three years ago, sunset.
What: Cassandra's first night of crimefighting as Batgirl, in which she rescues Lizzy and her sister from some thugs.
Rating: PG-13 for violence and possibly language.
The sun was only just now going down, and the city was still warm from the heat of the day. There was still plenty of light out, along with plenty of opportunities for someone dressed head-to-toe in black to be seen.
But Cassandra Cain couldn't stay inside. It was her first night as Batgirl, and she was so excited. A year of training had led up to this. She'd needed little to no help in the physical combat department; a majority of the tutorial had involved the specific procedures of the Bats, and getting used to the Batsuit and all of its accessories and features.
Leslie Thompkins, who had become like a mother to her -- the first one she'd really known -- had been vocally against it. Dick -- Robin -- had misgivings as well. But ultimately, this career path was her calling. The symbol of The Bat held a significance to her that was practically religious. And as much as she enjoyed protecting Leslie's clinic and the surrounding neighborhood -- teaching them self-defense was especially fun -- she had her gaze set on protecting Midtown as a whole. The rest of Gotham, too, when she was needed and once she got the hang of local crimefighting.
Now all she needed was a crime to fight. Or was it 'criminal' to fight? That made more since, since a criminal was a person and could be fought. A crime was a ... thing. Idea? Act? She'd have to ask about that.
The trees in Saint Mary's Park were old and large and perfect for perching. She could even hide amongst the tree branches, though keeping her cape from snagging on the limbs was more trouble than she'd originally thought. She knew from a year of living in Gotham that a lot of people were attacked in this park at night. Muggings, gang violence, rapes ... the park became a scary place once the sun went down. Perfect. She should have no trouble finding criminals to beat up.
